Barbadians tighten the screws – More Jamaicans beaten, locked up, kicked out

(From left) Andre Davis, Jermaine Blake and Chevine Edwards say they were physically and verbally abused before being locked up and sent home by Barbadian authorities last Sunday. Photo credit: Jamaica Observer

IGNORING the gathering storm of accusations about their poor treatment of visitors, Barbadian authorities have again allegedly beaten and kicked three more Jamaicans out of that eastern Caribbean island.

The three, Andre Davis, Jermaine Blake and Chevine Edwards — partners in the artiste management and music production company, Dajavu Records — said they were physically abused and threatened by Barbadian police and humiliated by that country’s immigration officers after being denied entry.

Edwards told the Observer yesterday that the trio arrived in Bridgetown on Sunday, March 20, 2011 on Caribbean Airlines flight BW55 minutes after 9:00 pm. He said they were removed from the immigration line and their passports and cellular phones were confiscated. They were interviewed individually and proved that they had met all the requirements, in terms of accommodation, business contact, cash and length of stay limits, said Edwards.

Well done Barbados. I’m sorry that this can happen to innocent people but sometimes innocent must suffer for guily. Most Jamaicans are honest people but there is too much of an uneducated and criminal element within the JA community who end up disrupting and disrespecting the places they travel to. They then run the ‘victim’ line, when the real victims are the people in the places they go to and mash up with their uncouth, illegal, and criminal antics. All caribbean people then get tarred with the same brush in US, UK or wherever. I just wish Antigua had clamped down on them earlier so that I can sleep in my bed in peace. Sounds harsh, but there it is.

Well, this is very wrong of Barbados to be treating any other nationality with total disrespect.I had a friend, who’s a Jamaican by birth, but has lived in the U,S,A.for over 16 years. She had decided to make a trip to Barbados, staying 3 days.In fact,we had a group who had wanted to spend vacation there,so this would be a great opportunity for her to check out some of the hotels, etc.
Sad to say she had not gotten that far,as she too was mistreated and called derogative names inside the airport, and returned on the next flight.I was sorry for her bad treatment, but of course,we had to cancel the trip, and head to jamaica instead, where we had a ball!!!!

I could comment about many things given this article, but I will choose to say one thing instead because the other comments are too thought provoking. A simple way to solve all of this is basically not to go to the “ppl dem country” If they do not want you on their island stay in your land of birth. No one can deport you from there. Even when you die, your country cannot refuse you. Why would you want to take your money and life into a country that you claim treats your people unfairly? in laymen terms “stay ur @$$ hOME!”

@Marv- I agree with you. There is always more than one side to a story; Story A, B and then the truth. Hopefully when all of the proper investigations have been carried out this matter will be put to rest. I am hoping that if it so happens that these Jamaicans who were making these allegations were found to be telling untruths, I wonder what that would say for the Jamaicans now?!?! I HOPE to God that if it is proven that they were lying, many of you will be walking with your tails between your legs. I wonder what some or most of you will think of Jamaicans then?! Hmmm… :-| If it so happens that the allegations against Bim are true, the consequences would obviously have to be dealt with.

I don’t think any of you who are speaking ill of Barbados or its people were at the ariport when these alleged incidents occured. Most of you are basing your comments on “hear say”. Wait and see what happens. Innocent until proven guilty :!:

Be that as it may, I am not disputing that the immigration officers can be uncouth but I’m sure that when many of you travel to other countries like the USA or the UK, some of us as Caribbean ppl get hassled and are faced with some of the most awful ppl.

And for those of you who are saying that Bajans tend to favour “white people”…..take a look at your own country, don’t many of you do the same? So for those of who live in a glass houses, shouldn’t be throwing stones!!!!

Barbados is a beautiful place to live and safe unlike many of our c’bbean counterparts.

Them bajan think they better than us becuz they have a ton of white man and batty man running things in there country. I as a student have been treated rather roughly and made to feel inferior when i go get my visa… i swear i wanted to whoop their ignorant batty man loving cunts. This has been happening for a while now and its not some isolated incident and they treat all ‘outsides’ like that.

Personally Caricom is just a load of BS, us OECS people should just come together and do our own thing- we got the same history and currency already.

Its not accurate to say that all people from Barbados are bad, it’s the people who works in immigration that have done this act, there are many nice people from this country, just like there are many nice people from all countries. It’s the same thing that happens in big cooperation, the managers, or supervisors treat the employees bad, but their human resouces and CEO’s don’t know any thing about it. This need to be addressed with their government, and maybe they need to get some bad eggs out, and put people who will follow rules, and people who cares about human beings.

These individual’s may have just taken it upon themselves to harass certain nationalities and make people lives miserable when they come to their country. So don’t blame all the people of Barbados for this cruelty. I live in the US, and I attended school with many people from Barbados, Jamaica, and many other parts of the carribean, and they were all very nice individuals.

Technology is to much advanced now for someone to go through this, Barbados need to catch up with the times. God will take care of this person, and for all the others around the world who find pleasure in doing such mischief. Remember that God sees everything.

Whenever I travel to Barbados and Trinidad with my Islamic attire, these people process me so quickly. Immigration officers smile and even make conversation with me all times I travel. It’s like they don’t even want me to stay in their airport too long. Are they afraid we bomb their airports? :-D

Same thing, I went to the UK, I’m walking the streets with my gown and turban and English people making space for me to pass, no joke…it’s like they are terrified to death of Islam :-D

If these things are happening to the Jamaicans, they must stand up for their rights, pure and simple.

While I do not agree to the methods which may have been used to interrogate these men. To Rebel this appears to have touched a nerve. However, we need to pick our Battles wisely. Martin Luther king didn’t march at the stroke of every drum but looked at the merits of each case before acting. We need at times to be as wise as wise as a serpent and as humble as a dove. Those of us who reside in the u.s. Know all too well that when random questioning is being done by the immigration officers you better go with the flow and humble yourself. If you want to catch an attitude be prepared for”entry denied.” Truth is every country trying to protect their self. The bad behaviors of a few has messed it up for others. Just as an aside I support the view that bajans treat Dominicans nice. First hand experience. Real brothwry/sisterly love.

I know that immigration and customs officer are there to prevent any undesirables entering their country, but they must treat everyone with respect.

Allegation, after allegation will not put that country in good light. The powers that be in Barbados (Little England) should take these allegations seriously, and do a proper investigation.

Yes Bajans have a serious problem with their attitude towards their black brothers and sisters. For some unkown reason they tend to favour the whites. This biasness starts from an early age. I went to school in Paddington, London, and had friends from all the Caribbean islands, but for some reason the Bajans favourered the whites. Sad, but true.

I am a traveller and i try to be at my best behaviour when i travel. it’s not like i am bad but u have to be on yur p’s and q’s especially when u are black. I was discriminated once by a white officer. All i did was just shut my mouth and follow the orders. It was just a test to see yur reaction and he surely did not get what he was looking for. Just shut up and do what they say and u will be fine. They like to intimidate people.

this is the attitude that got us on the slave ships in the first place. its people like you who were the
house neggars, always on your “Best behaviour”. if Martin Luther King Jr. had acted like you i wonder where black people would be today. if Rosa Parks had just “shut her mouth and follow orders” where would we be. had malcolm X been on his “best Behaviour” we would still be on the blutclat plantation.

I can understand your feelings, but I do not think you should go that far in your response to “malpardee”.

Customs and Immigrations officers can make life difficult for you as a visitor to their country. In fact some of them can be …. (i will not use the terminology here).

Therefore, it is sometimes advisable to respond to their questions and not be led into a verbal confrontation, you will lose out. That does not mean you should be humiliated, we have our diginty.

Considering how we are treated in Guada, Martinique, and Antigua, we should not condone this type of behavior and violation of one’s rights. I have been to B’dos a few times, and each and everytime, I was ran through the mill, because I hold a DA passport.

Immigration and customs personnel are given a strict guideline to follow when people from St. Vincent, Jamaica, Dominica, St.Lucia, etc, Flash their passports. If you look carefully, you will even see a black online immigration line…just look carefully on how quickly they process white visitors and tourists…

Why worry? These are the same people our Prime Minister has for his political strategist and advisors. They constantly ridicule people from the less developed islands, sometimes refer to them as monkey people, and maintain a superior complex towards those islands. Bajans need to know and understand that they are fooling themselves to think they are superior to any other island in the region. Lougaoo has a strong message to those Bajans who think they are superior to our Caribbean brothers and sisters. United we stand, divided we fall. The last time I check, Dominica still ships food to Babardos. Just a food for thought.
