Government has completed phase 1 of a public awareness programme in schools highlighting the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
The first phase was completed with a session at the Paix Bouche Primary School for students of Vieille Case, Thibaud, Bense, D’os Dane and Paix Bouche Schools on Thursday March 13, 2014.
This meant that students of primary schools from Delices to Portsmouth and Portsmouth to Coulibistrie were introduced to the very important topic of regional integration with special emphasis on CARICOM.
In addition, Sessions were held at the Castle Bruce and North –eastern Comprehensive Secondary Schools.
The visits to schools were organized by the Regional Integration and Diaspora Unit of the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development.
The sessions were presented by Felix Gregoire, Ambassador to the OECS and CARICOM and CARICOM Youth Ambassador Natasha Jervier.
The presenters were assisted by Dr. Jeffrey Blaize, Assistant Chief Education Officer; District Education Officers; Claudia Walter, Administrative Assistant; Ryan Royer, Technician; and other Government Employees.
The following topics were covered by the presenters:
1. Rationale for the establishment of CARICOM;
2. Objectives of CARICOM;
3. Institutions of CARICOM;
4. The Single Market and Economy (CSME);
5. Free Movement within CARICOM; and
6. The role of the CARICOM Secretariat as well as Member States.
Phase 2 of the programme will commence shortly with visits to primary schools from Salisbury to Petite Savanne, as well as sessions for Secondary Schools and the Dominica State College.
