Dominica donates US$100,000 to hurricane-ravaged Haiti, The Bahamas

Skerrit, who is heading a Caricom delegation, arrived in The Bahamas on Wednesday

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, has said the government of Dominica has donated US$100,000 to The Bahamas following the passage of Hurricane Matthew.

A sum of US$100,000 was also donated to Haiti, the hardest hit by Matthew, to meet that country’s immediate needs.

Skerrit, who is a heading a Caricom delegation to the affected countries as Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Governments, arrived in The Bahamas on Wednesday after visiting Haiti.

He said the funds have already been transferred to the Bahamian government and said the government of Dominica is “very humbled” by the “small contribution” in the aftermath of the hurricane.

He called on the Bahamian people to exercise patience as the country rebuilds after the hurricane.

“I want to say to the residents of Grand Bahamas that you have to exercise great patience,” he said. “We must understand it is only six days since the storm and not sixteen or 60 or 600.”

He stated that although there may be anxiety among the people, he was impressed with the government who was able to respond to every single question about the restoration process.

“It is going to take all of us in The Bahamas to work together to ensure that we can bring the country back to a state of normalcy,” he noted.

The Prime Minister said Caricom is on standby to provide technical people to assist in restoring electrical lines and poles.

“There are teams on standby, ready to come in at a moment’s notice to assist,” he said.

    Indeed Marcus Hill:

He may be involved in an accident, and sustained injuries, leaving a scar. However, that could not cause the condition of or disease of elephantiasis. If you saw him with a withered arm that could have been a result of the accident, I will not try to detail that in medical terms.

Nevertheless, I brief you on elephantiasis:which is a chronic filarial disease marked by inflammation, and obstruction of the lymphatics, and hypertrophy of the skin, and subcutaneous tissues, which chiefly affecting the legs, and external genitals.

The disease derives its name from the symptoms, particularly swelling of the legs, which makes them look like those of an elephant. True elephantiasis, or elephantiasis filariensis, is most often caused by a slender, thread-like parasite, the filarial worm, Wuchereria bancrofti, which enters the lymphatic system, causing an obstruction to drainage.

This disease, sometimes called filariasis, is transmitted by mosquitoes, or flies which carry blood infected with filaria larvae. Elephantiasis is most often encountered in Central Africa, in some Pacific islands, the Caribbean, and in other tropical and subtropical areas. It is rare or nonexistent in the temperate zone.

The first visible signs are inflammation of the lymph nodes, with temporary swelling in the affected area, red streaks along the leg, or arm, pain, and tenderness, attended by chills, and fever “elephantoid fever” and followed by the formation of ulcers, and tubercles, with thickening, discoloration, and fissuring of the skin.

Dominicans. how quickly do we forget. You all were in the same position last year. Other countries who donated had issues about paying their people and fixing pot holes too. Yet they stretched out their hands. Let’s not be ungrateful. The USA is in debt over it’s neck yet it gives to others. As a US citizen I don’t know what is being donated to other countries and it’s all US workers tax dollars. Be thankful at least you know what the Prime Minister did with $200,000 of your money I’m still waiting for the US Gov’t to tell me what happens to mine which a lot goes to waste.

You are nothing more than another silly Dominican displaying your badge of honor (stupidity) on your forehead. How on earth can you in your right mind make such stupid comparisons like that between Dominica and the United States.

Don’t you know that America, contributes (give away) billions of dollars each, and every year to nations including Israel, Pakistan Afghanistan and other nations?

Americas debt is self created in order to facilitate “a balance in trade” with nations such as China. America, can function debt free, so know what you are talking about before you compare America to Skerrit’s Dominica.

In Dominica there are people working for months and can’t be paid by the government! I am not suggesting that we should not give what we can afford, but when Skerrit gives away a hundred thousand dollars to Haiti when there are public works workers who has not been paid for months, that tells me something is wrong in Dominica!

  8. October 14, 2016

Haitians surely needs help but charity begins at home. The are people in Dominica who are almost 100 years ; blind people that I have seen with my two eyes who must crawl on there two hands and feet into a river in order to cross to go back and forth from their homes. In this day and age why should people put cream on their feet before going out ,then to cross the river they must wash out that cream because in the 20th century there is not even a little foot bridge built for the poor?Come on Skerrit ,;it is another well built vice to serve yourselves and your family….Charity begins at home then if there is any left you give to others.

At the end of the day
Thank you Lord, for my work and pay.
    I tried to do good
    Even though that I should
That’s my prayer at the end of the day.

So when the new dawn begins to break
Just lift up your eyes let your heart awake
Be ready to meet what the day may bring
And be ready to greet every man as a friend.

Nobody knows what a power you have found
So do all you can for the others around
Carry them high when they seem to be low
As on your way you go.

God blesses the givers of all kind gifts from the heart, to those in need.
Those who are grateful and are cheerful givers, God blesses them.

Be careful with your inconsideration and sarcasm. Do not begrudge and criticize the help and amount which was given to both countries. Both suffered from the ravages of Matthew. Both will also receive help internationally,
It is not for you to criticize and question where the money came come. If you have a godly, loving heart, you will be happy that the PM donated sum funds to both countries
Consider how much international help D/ca received after TS Erica. You did not sarcastically inquire where they got the money from to give to D/ca. You who criticize project your ingratitude. Houses are being built for displaced D/cans. All roads are now passable and more. Whatever else is to be done will be done in time.
These two countries are in dire need of help. Know that the help given is on behalf of Dominicans. Each government will be donating what they can on behalf of their nationals. Be happy D/ca is able to help.
Thank you PM! God bless you!

This is the most foolish comment I have ever read on DNO. I cannot believe it still has people that know nothing about international relation. Dominica may be in need of those funds for true to assist in different areas, but dont you think that in August- September 2015 after TS Erika, countries that poured out their support to Dominica, needed their monies for development within their own countries. Each government in the world has monies set aside to assist in these times, even if they are in need of funds themselves. It is the region responsibility to assist its fellow sister country in time of need. One of these days dont u pray that you or your family would be in need of help and people would come out and assist? Dont you think that all the persons that assist our citizens who are in need are not in need themselves?. You would prefer persons to donate 100 000 to pay someone legal fees as what was done in reference to the leader of the opposition than to a much needed cause .smh

Another point. Did u say Cabinet?. Well if so, just to make you know cabinet of all the ministers and senators on yhe governmeny side. Which means that obviously this was discussed. Just for clarification:
      – parliament: made up of all elected members plus senators selected on the gov and opp sides among other persons. There they approve laws, national budget and take certain decisions.
      – cabinet: ministers of government which come together to take certain governamental decisions. There they plan the way forward for the gov to take to ensure the day to day operations of the country.

Has anyone noticed that Skerrit has a deformity?

My observation is not a put down, nor a criticism, because no matter who we are, there is some sort of disease in our body; I am certainly living with three medical issues which if I am not careful can kill me any minute of the day!

My observation of Skerrit is that; I notice a deformity of his left hand, I wonder if Mr. Skerrit condition can remotely be diagnosed as elephantiasis?

As our nation Prime Minister, I think we the people do have a right to know if what we see is life threatening; therefore if Mr. Skerrit has not yet informed the nation in regards to his medical condition, perhaps it is time he do so! I am not being sarcastic about this, notice I refuse to call him out of his name on this one.

True as your comments may be; you need to realize the more one give to the needy, in a case like this, it is the more one gets in return.

This type of giving is not political in a sense, there is a need in Haiti right now, therefore the spearing of a few dollars from the treasury at this time is in order, and appropriate. Remember, Dominicans like to get, we are always begging, and complaining how hard is Dominica.

People who like to get should also like to give!

There is a Biblical principal about giving; to the poor, as long as the purpose of the giving is not to serve as a political ploy

Whenever politicians give ‘aid’ money, there is a scam. You are living in a dream world if you cannot work our how this back-scratching works.

They take taxpayers’ money and give it as ‘aid’. The money is never accounted for and the true beneficiaries never see the money (or a very small part of it anyway) and the money is then laundered back to the politicians and their friends.

The Clintons recent scandal shows you exactly how this is done. Read and learn what happened to Haiti: http://beforeitsnews.com/gold-and-precious-metals/2016/09/haitian-president-exposes-clinton-foundation-hillary-clinton-tried-to-bribe-me-2953310.html

      • Tell the Truth
        October 15, 2016

        Your comment is misleading.
The Clintons are not to be compared with other politicians. They donated privately, in the name of their Foundation. The cheque/transfer has to be issued with the name of the Foundation. This Foundation account will be credited accordingly. However they wish to claim it is their personal business.
The IRS should appropriately audit their contributions. If the IRS asks questions they should receive answers from the Clintons.
When governments donate to a country after a disaster, the cheque or transfer from account do not come from politicians’ accounts In this case, they cannot.receive a personal receipt which will reflect on their account.
Can you visualize the PM would donate $200,000 to Haiti and Bahamas and then expect a receipt in his name to apply to his income tax return in Dominica? Whoever is responsible for auditing his statement/claim, would immediately detect it as providing false information.

Now back to our regime, they are the same people who have failed to give us audited accounts on passport sales and are the same people who have failed to ensure justice for GON when the PM is personally implicated in the missing millions from GON’s practice.

Still have confidence in your master? I will tell you that we will NEVER get an audited account of the fictitious ‘aid’ to Haiti and the Bahamas.

The total amount of US$200,000 should go to Haiti or at least US$190,000 to Haiti and US$10,000, as a token, to the Bahamas.

The Bahamas is a middle to high income country and has its reserves of cash from tourism.

I acknowledge that the PM as Chairman of CARICOM is doing his job.

Alot of them quickly forgot that’s why their comments are so selfish. I ask forgiveness for them lord. Because I don’t want Dominica to feel another wrath like Erika again because it don’t seem like we learnt our lessen the first time.

There are some who appear to have lost their memory and who also do not think. It is the height of wickedness of heart that they make such ungodly comments.
They do not consider that God takes note of their words/comments. Another disaster may be worst. Sadly the innocent ones will be affected.
They also do not pray and ask God to spare them any more disasters.
They may never have thanked him for sparing them. Yet they received help.
They project their ingratitude. They do not know what will occur next when they least expect it. God is displeased with such people.

When other countries assisted us last year did you all ask where they got the money from? Are you all really serious????????

That is much better mr. Skerrit and should have been done before you got your press secretary to write up that cringe-worthy first press release. Tactical error I’m afraid. It is only the cost of one of our passports and well worth it.

DNO, I am a bit confused about this posting.
On one side its saying that PM Skerrit leads and heads a CARICOM delegation to Haiti and Bahamas which is putting the CARICOM in the spotlight. Its basic understanding that once he is the president of CARICOM he will head the delegation. So that is in no wise placing him in the spotlight. On the other hand a post is saying that Dominica donates US100000 to Haiti and (correct me if I am wrong) another $100000 to Bahamas. A few questions here need answering.

    1. Did Dominica donate $100000 to Haiti
    2. Did Dominica donate $100000 to Bahamas
    3. Did the other Member States of CARICOM donate any monies
    4. Did the other Member States of CARICOM contribute toward the US200000
    5. Where did that money come from
    6. Was there any consultation with the Opposition let alone the HOA to make that contribution
    7. Is PM Skerrit using the public purse like it is his personal wallet
    8. Aren’t there much needed things to do in Dominica

OMG…. 8-O  :( :( :?: :-? …What!!!?? Where all this money come from? Why not from the OECS or from CARICOM? This government and its leadership are mad. Bahamas is a progressive, productive tourist industry nation, with great opportunities for recovering AAP due to tourism. What we have in Dominica is a loose ….. Labour Government dishing the limited resources we have. all Skerrit looking for is fame and publicity, maybe just like Trump
This is madness, robbery, and insult to us the Dominican people.
Silver lake is in poverty, Fond Cole, Tarrish Pit, Gutter in poverty. The whole of Dominica in poverty, no bananas, fruits nor exporting good to gain income and this clown abusing our scarce resources? God Help Us Please…Hurry put a hand.

Not my favorite person but great job, Prime Minister Skerrit. It is not always how much you give but is from how much you give. I still think that all should be given to Haiti but it’s all good. This is how you tell God thanks for all we received from the outside world last year.

It should be comprehended he could not possibly give to one and not the other for obvious reasons.
