First hurricane of the season develops

FLORIDA, United States, Monday August 22, 2011 – What was Tropical Storm Irene when it passed the Leeward Islands over the weekend has now developed into the 2011 Atlantic season’s first hurricane that’s now heading for the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

After lashing the Leewards with heavy rains and strong winds, forcing the closure of airports in St. Kitts and the British Virgin Islands, Irene strengthened over Puerto Rico early this morning to develop into a Category One hurricane carrying maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, with potential to get even stronger over the next two days.

Why, in this day and age, are we still attributing the weather to the acts of a deity? This is what cavemen and medievals did because they did not know any better. And furthermore, that same storm you are so happy about is wrecking elsewhere. Are those people not blessed to you? Do they deserve punishment? Is every act of nature, from a drop of rain to the meteor that destroyed the dinosaurs, an act of god? Were the dinosaurs sinful and needed to be destroyed? Come on now. We should have moved beyond this. You can believe that a deity does what it likes with weather, but do not deny that scientists can explain most meteorological phenomena just as well.
