Guyana’s President David Granger said Tuesday that Venezuela has deployed troops to a contested border region in what he called a “dangerous” escalation of a long-running dispute between the South American nations.

The government of President Nicolas Maduro made “extraordinary military deployments,” along what Guyana considers its western border, Granger told reporters.

He called the development a “hostile and aggressive” step in a border dispute that dates to the 19th century but has grown more heated over the past year following a major off-shore oil discovery in waters claimed by both nations.

“We feel that Venezuela is treading a dangerous course at this point in time rather than seeking a peaceful resolution of the matter,” Granger said. “Venezuela seems to be pursuing a very offensive and aggressive course.”

Ok this place is disputed; Venezuela didn’t act for number of years. Why they did not act? Because this area had nothing. Now that they the place has oil, they are taking action. Again that is pure greed. That is why I don’t trust this Venezuelan president. Both countries are already poor; raising war will just make things worse. Seeing that PM Skerrit is so close to him, maybe he should have pep talk with him. In the end, the US will end up helping Guyana because this oil is located on Guyana’s territory. Skerrit has to be careful with the trust he puts in such leaders.

You’re describing the relationship between Venezuela and Dominica as though it were a partnership of equals, and nothing could be further from the truth.

Where there is oil conflict will always be a major part of defence. No matter what.
What does the Dominican PM think of what Venezuela is doing? Who would be siding with?

If a government has done something good and excelled in it for his country and helps his nationals get out of a certain degree of poverty by financial providing for them and due to this puts a smile on their faces, this is the government I would vote for.
It is yet to be seen what will occur between Venezuela, Columbia and Guyana. I hold my views on this one, at least, for a while. Let us see what occurs.
Those who are looking in from the outside and comment should pray for those countries, your country and the world in general. God knows they need prayers and to live in peace and tranquility with their neighbors.

As a citizen of Dominica and by extension a citizen of CARICOM… I am disturbed by the news of Venezuela’s threats at invading Guyana, the headquarters of CARICOM. The day Venezuela invades Guyana would be a sad day in the long standing relationship that have existed between all CARICOM/CARIFOUM countries and the Bolivarian Republic, more so Guyana today… which other country next…

It seems to me that these threats are amid the discovery of OIL in a region of Guyana that has been illegally claimed by Venezuela. It seems to me that Venezuela does not want our sister CARICOM country to become an exporter of oil/ petroleum products and is flexing her military might to bully, intimidate and take what does not rightfully belong to her… much the same way they took Bird Island “Islas Aves” from Dominica…

GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME, ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD… LET’S USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO REFLECT AND PRAY THAT COMMONSENSE PREVAILS AND HOPE FOR PEACE IN THESE TRYING TIMES

While Maduro is trying to show us love in Dominica with his Blow-Go-Dowe houses, he sending troops after his neighbors in Guyana? I hope he doesn’t sent troops after us later.

Mr. Skerrit, for the sake of Shiv Chanderpaul, who is a Guyanese by birth, needs to be protected or rescued since he is a holder of our Dominica passport given to him by you. Please get Maduro to keep his arms away from the people of Guyana

That’s because Columbia has an army which is way better than Venezuela’s. The Columbian army has weapons from the US and sections of the Columbian army are trained by the US. Additionally the Columbian army has more experience from years of fight the FARC. And I am pretty much sure, they have toilet paper. lol

On the other hand Guyana hardly has something you can really call an army. As the old saying goes, “jumbie knows who to frighten.”

Maduro badly needs a a digression, a common cause that calls for Venezuelans to unite behind patriotism and nationalism, in order to divert escalating opposition at home away from mounting dissatisfaction and unrest about his rule, which is now by decree. This is a desperate gamble and I’m afraid he will end up with more than a bloody nose.

Wow….what is your beloved Prime Minister going to do? Is he going to side with Venezuela after Venezuela gives us 300 petrocasas or with Guyana, a member of CARICOM? We all know he has sided with Venezuela against the United States. Interesting!!!
