INTERESTING: Guyanese mother kills 8-month-old child, throws body in toilet

The latrine and the sheet which wrapped the baby.

GUYANA – An 18-year-old Parika Facade resident is now in police custody after the decomposed body of her eight-month daughter was retrieved from a pit latrine in the yard behind her house.

The baby is suspected to have been killed sometime on Monday (Sept. 27, 2010) and then wrapped in a sheet, towel and then a hammock and placed in the latrine pit.

The woman who is originally from Lethem is named Sattie. The police was called in after neighbors did not see the woman with the baby. When questioned as to the baby’s wherabouts she gave conflicting reports.

“Sattie said she gave away the baby in one instance and her sister from Lethem took the baby with her in another instance,” the neighbour reported.

A neighbor told Guyana Times that the baby normally cries a lot. She was born without an anus and suffered from a number of ailments. The child used to excrete through a tube on the side of her stomach.

When asked, neighbours said the young mother never showed any signs of frustration and they were baffled as to why she would harm the child. At the time of the incident, the sister-in-law of the accused related that her brother was not the father of the child but he “took up,” with the girl after they met while her daughter was in hospital.

The sister-in-law related that her brother felt sorry for Sattie and took her in. However since going to the interior to work, neighbours have reported that Sattie is a regular at going out at nights and leaving the baby at home. This prompted them to check for the baby after they heard no sound from the house.

Neighbours believed she was lying after the two conflicting reports and called in the police.

A post mortem examination of the baby is to be performed on the remains to determine the cause of death and a charge will be issued if the child was killed.

I loved it when we did not have the media…i only heard what Radio cord patate said. Five yrs after it happened. So the world was a better place. Sometimes too much information…

Things are no worse now than they used to be…we just get the news faster…Cain killed Abel…stale news…2000 yrs ago it happened and was documented, still we are so shocked today when it happens.
How many women stifle their baby, drown their babies and pit toilet and river them and wavin dem. Is because the media was not so present, the world is no worse today

Life has to go on and progress. We pay the price for progress.
We have what it is called too much information overload. It does not bother me. This is a way of life with more and worst to come and as people become more godless, selfish, self-centered and ignorant in some respects. We must understand that this is the cause of the world’s will – of people’s ills.
Consider living 10, 20 years or more. What will it be like then?
I always say that it is a good thing people do not live forever. Otherwise with what is occurring and more to come which we did not hear of and also may never have happened and not on such a wide scale and shockingly so in the past, we would die of a heart attack.
It appears this case is another Casey Anthony of Florida, except that this baby was sick.
I recently attended a social function where there were also teenagers. These days teenagers are having children. Some of them are not prepared to have children much more to take care of them and nurture them.
One of them had a young child of a few weeks who had a tube in its nose. The mother appeared to be proud of her baby. I do hope that this baby will get well with no future impediment. Then again, who knows.
Let us pray for the world, for the youths, for those who are experiencing difficulties as this woman.
As I always say: “There but for the grace go I.” It is a message for us all, no matter how old we are.
We must keep in mind that God is just and merciful.

Very unfortunate when mothers resort to such drastic measures if they feel hopeless and helpless in dealing with childrearing.
However, I think people have missed the point here, most likely why DNO published this story in the first place.
Please note, HOW the Guyanese authorities have handled this case, the woman is in police custody, not in hospital. The incident here, the mother is at the hospital, she should be in prison and Dr Benjamin deal with her there, IF needed.

Some people commit mercy killing. Mothers and fathers have often killed or end a suffering life of their loved ones. The news article say that child suffered from many ailments including an anus problem. Perhaps pain was the reason the child cried a lot. Maybe that mother pretended that it did not bother her but it did.

But why doesn’t the news article say that relatives and friends did their best to give her comfort and support because of her age and the condition of her baby? But they all knew that she liked to go out at night and live the baby at home. Whatever that mean.

The Life of Love is what we need in this world, but we just refuse to conceive and give birth to this precious and Eternal Life. Probably it is because we are always pregnant with Satan’s demons and his control in our minds.

It may be the hospital authorities did not help. The woman was left alone to observe and hear the pain of the baby crying. My heart is filled with sadness for this lady. Nevertheless, she should not have murdered the baby. Surely, someone else could have been given custody of the child. We must be compassionate for her. Blame it also on the government/hospital authorities.

@Way Papa: excuse me but every death that goes around in Dominica is not to be blamed on the PM. It’s not his fault that young men decide to take a knife and stab people or to take a gun to shoot people they dislike. It is their decision, it is their consequence!
