JAMAICANS head to the polls today in the country’s 17th general election since universal adult suffrage when citizens won the right to vote for the first time in 1944 while the country was still under colonial rule.

Political pundits, using recent opinion polls, believe the election will go down to the wire in the race for the 63 parliamentary seats. However, the two major political parties — the People’s National Party (PNP), which has campaigned under the slogan ‘Step Up the Progress’, and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), which has promising voters to move them from ‘Poverty to Prosperity’ — were, up to last night, brimming with confidence that they will take home the election.

While people will go out to vote for their respective candidates, several say their vote will be for the leader of the parties, the PNP’s 70-year-old Portia Simpson Miller and Andrew Holness, the 43-year-old leader of the JLP.

Yesterday, there was a frenzy of activity at PNP headquarters on Old Hope Road and the JLP headquarters on Belmont Road, both in Kingston, as the parties made final preparations for today’s vote.

Oh sorry because I meant to add The presidency as part of the major players put in place to help protect us, but alas, alas, alas! This time both the president and the pm on the plane that going to crash. When they were going to test the airport Skerro sent the then president on the plane because he wanted to make sure one was there to lead in case the test failed but this time around, both of the on board and, they to make things worse, the police commissioner, the PRO are all on board the plane that seems to have disappeared from rader.

Personally speaking I like Portia Simpson-Miller, but that is for Jamaicans to decide on.

As a Dominican I am very concerned about Dominica that seems to be plunging into disaster and the sad thing is, the passengers on board don’t seem to care. Air Dominica seems stock somewhere in mid air, the pilot not communicating with the terminal, and all signs are leading to a major disaster!

The sad thing about the state of Dominica is, all the major players that are put in place to save any country that is in trouble are all on board the plane. I am referring to institutions such as, The police Department, the election commission, the judicial fraternity, the local media, and others are all on air Dominica and no one cares about delivering us because they seem to have very good life insurance.

I think those of us on the ground need to put a plan together to ensure we save Dominica, before it’s too late. Time surely seems to be against us though
