NO FREE HELP – Trinidad PM

Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Trinidad PM

No help for Caricom countries hit by Tropical Storm Tomas without benefits to Trinidad and Tobago.

This was made clear by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday.

She said Trinidad and Tobago stands ready to assist its Caricom neighbours but she stipulated that any aid would only come after discussions with her Cabinet colleagues as well as the Opposition Leader, and must in some measure benefit the country.

Speaking at a news conference at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s, Persad-Bissessar said she has received a call from the Prime Minister of St Vincent while Foreign Affairs Minister Suruj Rambachan had been in contact with his counterparts in Barbados and St Lucia, territories in the region which have been hit by Tomas.

She said she intended to speak to her Cabinet colleagues as well as the Leader of the Opposition to see what relief this country could give to the other Caribbean islands.

“We will have to look at ways in which we would be able to assist. But you would recall my comments earlier this year, when I said there must some way in which Trinidad and Tobago would also benefit. So if we are giving assistance with housing for example, and that is one of the areas that we (Prime Minister of St Vincent and myself ) spoke about, … then we may be able to use Trinidad and Tobago builders and companies, so that whatever money or assistance is given, redounds back in some measure to the people of Trinidad and Tobago,” she said.

She said this is why she intends to approach her Cabinet colleagues as well as the Leader of the Opposition with this proposal—to marry the benefit to Trinidad and Tobago while giving assistance to those islands that have been very badly hit.

The Manning government had been severely criticised by Trinidad and Tobago nationals for giving assistance to Caribbean countries especially in non-emergency situations.

Persad-Bissessar said it was St Vincent Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves who reported to her that that island was devastated. He revealed that over 600 homes were completely destroyed, infrastructure damaged and the agricultural sector ravaged, she said. “The Prime Minister indicated that not a plantain or banana tree was standing,” Persad-Bissessar added.

She said Barbados and St Lucia were doing a needs assessment and Gonsalves had indicated that he would do something in writing when that country conducts its needs assessment.

She said the Government had already mobilised through the Minister of Local Government, two containers of foodstuff, and it would make a decision where to send it but “certainly to St Vincent”.

Noting that the news suggested that the storm was heading to Haiti, she said it was tragic since Haiti was pounded in so many ways. She said if this is the case, Government would have to consider assistance to Haiti again. “But it would do nothing unless the Cabinet discusses it and the Leader of the Opposition is consulted,” she stressed.

@Khastro: Listen all countries usually expect something in return when they send help, but no country is stupid enough to talk about it on National TV. Its something thats supposed to be worked out in the back ground and not used like some kinda bargaining chip for getting more for ones country. Especially in a situation like this where the other countries are in desperate need of any kinda help.

    @interesting:

I have visited T & T a few times because I have relatives who reside there. It is interesting that you mentioned the water in T & T. This reminded me that some time ago during a telephone conversation with one of my relatives who reside in T & T, I was informed (do not want to mention any names and area here) that they had a water resource constructed in their yard to collect rain water. In this way, when T & T does not have water or the resource water is low, they will always have water. You know water as electricity are of extreme importance.
They have a lot of land space. I was told how much they paid to construct it. How many people in T & T have that privilege and money to do so? Only if they have the space and can afford it. They also need to obtain a permit, at a cost, to do so.
Anyway, people are people wherever we reside. There are some nice T & T people. Residing in Canada, I have met and do know people from all countries, specifically from the West Indies.
I do have some very good long time friends who are originally from Trinidad and most of them are Indians – Catholic as I am which I love to state. They are hospitable and generous people. I will inform you, these are none to compare with others. They comprise of my personal friends. I suppose, hopefully, in some cases, as we treat others, the good, kind and loving of heart they will treat us in return.
Guess what? I have been fortunate in that I attribute it to the love of God and His protection that residing in Canada I have chosen to befriend and to keep those friends who are religious, loving and law-abiding ones. Such people do contribute to our well-being and enhance our lives.
We get along very well. For all the years I have known them, not once have we argued. They speak their mind and they know that I am quite capable of speaking my mind, :) specifically on also religious matters of our faith, the latter as I distribute same to them and to others. I allow them their personal freedom to speak their mind. We converse and exchange ideas but never argue.
This is truly to have something in common with those who are not from the same country as each one of us possess his/her individual characteristic traits. This is also genuine adult maturity – free to agree or disagree amicably.
Since we cannot see and/or foresee the future, I also like to state: “So far so good.”
All good things come from God and revert back to him. In all things we give Him due thanks and praise.
At the same time, we must constructively criticize and oppose the statement of, as this T & T PM who needs to learn love and compassion toward their neighbors as in the case of St. Lucia.
People are judged by their words and actions. Let us judge wisely and not wickedly.
Our Lord said: “I judge by what I see.” We can also state: “By what we hear” as contained in their hearts and minds and generated through their mouths”.
I pray for St. Lucia and its nationals that their loss will one day be their gain with faith, hope and trust in God. God bless them.

    November 4, 2010

Why Some of you calling for boycott of TnT products, when you have Domlec FLEECING the people of Dominica for years?
Start at home! Boycott Domlec so they can feel it…fraid they cut power?, what’s a little darkness for a few months, we will bounce back as we have done before. This lady just had a little too much Montgay rum, that’s all.

    November 4, 2010

This has racial overtones considering that she sent an aluminum smelter to Guyana, claiming that Guyana needs it more than TnT. What is she the PM or the minnister of Indian affairs?
The Doctor must be turning in his grave at the intentions of this. Just look at the facial features, typical of a WOMIEL.

Note: When you make your comments here please don’t bunch all TnT people in this.
TnT has for years worked with us all as one. True dat. She sure won’t be reelected, she gives TnT Indians a bad name though she is the 2nd Indian elected to that office. Black, White, Indian, Chinese in TnT have lived togetherness for years.

I can’t believe that a human being from a neighbouring island is speaking like that. Persad-Bissessar has revoked the statement of the former Prime Minister of T&T in his quest to join the Caricom because she thinks that the “little islands” will be to dependant on T&T. This woman needs to open her eyes and see how being a partner with us would benefit her country and stop thinking of the negative. helping your Caribbean sister in a time of need should not result in what u can gain from it. help with a willung heart bcuz tomorrow might as well be ur turn. If this woman continues with that stupid mentality her term will soon end as PM in T&T.

Oh and will you please tell your Parliamentary representative to start giving the people of Wesley the representation that they deserve?. The roads are in a mess.

How many of us here blogging have visited TnT? How many of us in DOMINICA, St Lucia, Antigua, St Kitts etc live way better than people in Trinidad? So many of them don’t even have running water at home….you cannot drink the water….you got to live like a prisoner in your house for fear of being abducted, rape and or killed.

Tell Madam Karmla today is St Lucia, tomorrow just might be Trinidad. No plumbing services, dilapidated homes, and the list goes on. People dying like flies in the dispicable hospitals. Tell me where in Dominica you see them things.

Karmla Dominica will help St Lucia and St Vincent. Case in point, just July 2010 St Lucia made big statement and said they don’t want water from Dominica because they don’t trust it. November 2010, they wish they had the same water to drink and bathe and wash. All they using is Sanitizers……..what goes around comes around…you cannot take back the spoken word.

What the PM of T&T must understand and remember, is that the rest of the East Caribbean countries provide a market for their goods – a market without which many of their companies would not have survived today. So be carefull Madam PM!!! Your country cannot stand alone in this global village.

This attitude exhibitted by the Lady PM of T&T should be a reminder to those of us old enough to remember the failure of the Federation. And that is why we of the OECS must stand behand our respective governments to work towards greater coopration between its members. This should be an eye opener for us all in the Organistion.

Imagine a Head of State setting pre-conditions for assisting a sister caribbean country in the aftermath of a disaster. Sickening!!!!!!

I calling on banks in Dominica to remove whatever money they have in TNT and if Royal Bank of Canada in Dominica associated with RBTT then we should send a clear signal and move to Scotia Bank first thing Friday morning.

Lady PM! when you help from the “heart” it’s not free. It is more rewarding than anything money can buy. Your comments might cost you more than what you would have spent helping people in need. I hope that you will soon realize your stupidity and selfishness are of poor standard. I wish your country no ill fate, but you should keep in mind that no country is immune to disasters; and you know what, if your country should need help in a disaster, we as a loving people will stand ready to help your people. Your baseless comments should remain a revelation of your character but not reflection of your people.

    @Concerned Citizen:

You do have a point and it was well taken. However, the T & T PM has heard of the hurricane in St. Lucia which devastated it with loss of lives. Her assistance was requested. If she is unable to do so, she should have declined and as someone who commented stated: “Say nothing; keep quiet.” She went on to state that if she helps, T & T must benefit from it. This is a heartless statement to make under the circumstances. She has shown her true colors. For one who is in such a position, she lacks sensitivity and compassion.
T & T is fortunate that it is spared hurricanes. Nevertheless, their day will come.
T & T is a bigger country but I am not really impressed about it due to the number of abductions and murders of all which are shocking.
In an affluent area where a few of my relatives reside, whenever it rains their telephone is inoperable and for days, even weeks. I am most surprised and have commented, for a place as Trinidad this should never occur especially in that area. There are times I have telephoned and am unable to reach them. Later I was informed about this situation.
Let me further state that there are Trinidadians who reside in T & T who are not pleased with her. I have some long time good friends who are T & T Indians and who are also of the same faith as I, Catholic. They love their country and visit annually. I have not discussed this PM with them. The next time I speak to them I must remember to enquire about their views about her.
There are some people who are not concerned about the PM as long as they are not affected by the policy, are able to survive, to visit and have an enjoyable time.
This T & T PM will one day receive two-fold what she generates and through her mouth, as imbedded in her heart. If only she knew what is in store for her in the future, she would not be so high and mighty and uncaring. Some people allow positions to go to their head. They never realize that they would be thrust in such a position. It appears that this PM is one of them.
St. Lucia should not bother to seek her help and should refuse any help. There are other countries which will assist it, without the help of the T & T PM.
The government of St. Lucia heard what she stated. She should be informed and in no uncertain way to keep her help and what to do with it. You know what I mean. :)
At the same time, God helped Dominica that it was spared the brunt of the hurricane.

    November 4, 2010

@ Concerned Citizen…for the most part, well said. Most countries expect something in return when they give assistance, especially help in non-disaster situations. I understand Trinidad’s position to have it’s people benefit anytime they give help. China, US, Venezuela, and other countries do it.

BUT, there is tact and decency about how it is said and done. I think the Trinidad PM should have been a little more sensitive, tactful and careful in articulating that there are strings attached to Trinidad’s assistance. Realizing that economies, esp of the Caribbean, are all inter-related, there is a danger of repercussions (boycotts, higher tariffs, bad blood, etc) from such statements. It is not good public policy for any country to explicitly say that they expect something back from their assistance, esp during a disaster. THere are some things that are better left in the fine print – and not blabbed across the headlines of electronic mass media.

It makes no sense and only helps to undermine efforts that are being made to unify (CSME, etc) the Caribbean. Trinidad should realize, as a small developing island nation, that it depends on the Caribbean as much as we depend on them. They cannot forget that hurricanes can visit them… or even worst yet, a devastating earthquake. And I wonder who would rush to help? Whatsoever a man sows, that he shall reap…

And I don’t think it productive to be calling the lady names (as is happening from some of the comments below), or otherwise inciting racial tensions. If we do so, are we not being as bad as we claim she is? Help in whatever way you can – but above all, pray for her and for the nation of Trinidad. We all have our crosses to bear, huh?

We must also be aware that TRINIDAD IS ONLY A SLAM, like any other THIRD WORLD NATION.
Its quite comical, to see how one third world slam behaves like they are those rich industrialized nations. Yet still, they are nothing on any GLOBAL SCENE.

TRINIDAD WITH ITS SO CALLED OIL is still not able to have a vibrant economy like other nations.
Their economy is something of a DISMAL FAILURE.

    COME ON NOW!
WHY MAKE SUCH AN ASININE COMMENT WHEN YOU VERY WELL KNOW YOU GOT NOTHING, IN THE FIRST PLACE.

The saddest thing about it, is how SAINT LUCIA got caught up in this BEGGING ATTITUDE OF RALPH GONZALVES OF SAINT VINCENT.

    NEED TO REITERATE.

Just need to say… SAINT LUCIA HAS NEVER AND WOULD NEVER ASK TRINIDAD (A THIRD WORLD SLAMS) FOR HELP. TRINIDAD HAS NOTHING TO GIVE.
This is the sole doing of the Vincentian Prime Minister.
We in ST. LUCIA, DISTANCE OURSELVES WITH GREAT PRIDE OUT OF THIS SAGA.

WE ARE A RESILIENT PEOPLE AND KEEP OUR PRIDE WHERE IT IS SUPPOSE TO BE.
I PRAISE OUR PRIME MINISTER.. KING, FOR KEEPING OUR PRIDE AT BAY.

WE CAN RECOVER BY OURSELVES. HAIL TO SAINT LUCIA.:)

Please go easy on my PM. I am sure her words did not express her true feelings. Kamla is a very caring person. Sometimes, trying to me politically correct can get in the way. Also it could be at the wrong time.

Let’s try to spread a little more love and unity in the Caribbean.

  45. William McLawrence
    November 4, 2010

The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, Honorable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, is right on target with her decision to first consult her Cabinet colleagues and the Leader of the Opposition. This is an example of good governance and transparent leadership. She never said she would not assist the islands affected by the passage of the tropical storm Tomas. She is simply said she first need to consult her Cabinet colleagues and the Leader of the Opposition. What is the big deal with her doing this.

These are hard times for everyone and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is no exception. I agree that if the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago has to offer help using their Tax Payers money then Trinidad and Tobago companies should be used to implement the projects that require to be done with the tax payers money. For example the same rule applied to the Chinese with the grant funding for our west coast road rehabilitation. We must recognize that emergency aid funding is drying up every where… it’s not business as usual for distribution of aid any more…nothing comes for free anymore. Why should I give assistance and not try to cecoup something out of it.

I am sure tha affected countries, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia, Barbados, all independent states, understands that. Are we not aware that it is going to cost the people of Trinidad and Tobago money to assist these countries? Why should it be our issue to be even calling for boycott of Trinidad and Tobago products on our super market shelves.

Rather than being critical of the conditions under which the Government and people of the Republic of Trinidad and Todago to offer assistance, let’s see how we can assist our selves. I am therefore calling of all civic minded Dominicans to come together to organize a Dominica Regional Relief Fund to come to the aid of our regional brothers and sisters in times of disasters. Such a Fund could be spearheaded by the Office of Disaster Management and the local Red Cross. I am available to volunteer time and resources as required…are you???

  46. Two Wrong does not make it Right
    November 4, 2010

People of the caribbean islands let us take this as an incentive to organize to become self sufficient; I mean we need to revolutionize our methods of creating new business opportunities that will increase jobs and increase revenue. Remember Trinidad has a more varied economy and petroleum is something that will sustain them despite a boycott. So let us roll up our sleeve and have entrepruneurship forerooms to discuss new investments between government and potential business person. We need to look at what can improve investment especially from the government side (port duties and tax breaks). This is where our mind should be and not on pouring gas on a politician statement intended to avoid mistakes from the previous administration. This is clearly the mindset of people who allow fear of open minded governance to overwhelm them, but under normal circumstance or after she think it over there may very well be an apology. If I might add too, many caribbean politicians lack the skills to rationalize issues that needs to be dealt with honestly even it mean losing the next election, because they make retaining power their priority; case in point, this statement by the Trini PM sounds like a person working towards winning the next general election despite just being elected.

This is a result of the TNT PM’s open statement to the media saying she will not give any assistance to Caricom countries affected by Hurricane Tomas unless it is to the benefit of Trinidad. The comments of the Prime Minister of T & T is very insensitive to say the least. At a time when people are suffering this statement is callous. Today it’s St.Lucia, Barbados and St. Vincent; tomorrow it may very well be Trinidad. How would the PM feel hearing these words from other Caricom Leaders. Often we forget the golden rule “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It is a fact that women in leadership positions or even as bosses are more insensitive than men….this is just testament to that fact. I pray the PM of T&T listens to herself and make amends.

Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Trinidad PM: If you wish to assist in times of disaster and as requested you help because of the loving kindness of your heart and that of your taxpaying nationals. You do not set conditions when you assist others. This is a selfish attitude. You will never receive God’s blessings.
Let us face it, this woman is not a Christian who knows this and who may never have been taught about love for neighbor and assisting those who are in need of and specifically when a disaster occurs. She was elected under her pretext of assisting her nationals. Really? She cannot deceive everyone.
She thinks that the four-year term will last forever including her life.
This is the problem with such people as her who have been taught that they do not have a soul, that there is no eternity and that when they die they will be reincarnated and return to earth as any animal, this is the manner in which they act. Foolish people. Therefore they have no conscience and remorse about what they say and do.
She is presently on a high roller coaster. It is only a matter of time and she will be deposed from her earthly throne.
The majority of Trinidadians were not smart enough when they voted for her. They were deceived. Such politicians as herself are only out to pursue and promote their personal agenda and helping their own. There are those who are doing this right here in Canada.
It appears to me that you act like the Chinese government, help but send your workers to assist and disregard the unemployed nationals who are in need of jobs and who will benefit from it.
I have relatives who reside in Trinidad, some of whom are not Trinidadian-born and who are paying their fair share of taxes throughout the years. Please consider this when you make such statements.
I always say that our patient God is observing and taking note.

I feel now that i must comment on this now for fear of what will come. To all our neighbours affected by this horrible storm, i want you to know that no right thinking Trinidadian will tolerate this type of ignorance from a sitting Prime Minister, after all it is taxpayers money she intends to use, and i for one will not stand idly by as she degenerates my country into an abyss of hate and bottom feeders. We will not allow this to happen, however we do need our caricom brothers help, we need your voices to ring out and save us from the madness that has taken over our nation, we want the right of recall, we want our prime minister removed immediately, and for this we seek your help. So use your computers, your press, you tv time, help us save our nation from the hate this new government has begun to sew. I do not want to be a pessimist but the reality is CSME will never work. Based on my experience with Trinis and Bajans. Bajans don’t consider themselves Caribbean and Jamaicans refer to us as small islanders. The lady honestly did not say that she is not going to help, she said their own people will be involved so that TnT would benefit. Folks if we study basic economics we will learn that nothing is for FREE. China gave us assistance yet their own contractors are employed, eventually we have to take loans from China its all part of the deal. Every country is looking for means and ways how to capitalize and grow their Economy. Look at the foreign policy of USA, why is their so much hatred by the Arabs at USA? In Haiti the aid that is provided is run by the nationals of the countries who give it. In every country there is unemployment, TnT no exception and they will have to figure out how they are going to assist and also benefit their citizens. Most countries use foreign direct investments, that is what TnT is doing now, instead of foreign portfolio investments. In the end folks its the UGLY face of capitalism, Its all about the BENJAMINS….

I am saddened by those comments from the T&T PM but not surprised. History has shown us that we should expect nothing more from them. Remeber Federation? Trinidad’s position after Jamaica dropped out was, “one from ten leaves naught”. That in effect spelled the end of the West Indies Federation. The Govts of the other CSME countries should demand an apology from Trinidad’s PM. This is a very bad precedent to demand something in return as a condition for helping a neighbour in an emergency. Let’s nip this trend in the budd.

When I heard the statements that where made by the PM of TnT I was shocked. People are dying and all you can think of is how much you can squeeze out of these islands!!! Come on man where is your humanity. Look around in every supermarket throughout the OECS and beyond and what you see? A whole bunch of products made in Trinidad and Tobago. I personally love their Fruta juices, Crix crackers and biscuits but after hearing what she said I will not buy another product that is made in Trinidad and Tobago until she apologizes. We may be small islands compared to TnT but we still have our pride. Maybe when there manufacturing industry feels the squeeze maybe just maybe Trinidad and Tobago will realize the worth of our small island states.

OH WOW – whatever happened to “we’re all in this together”, or “we’re all brothers and sisters”, or “we all help each other in a time of need”?

    You know, the TnT PM has every right to say that, and that OK – but she must be mindful of 2 things;

    (1) we all know that Trinidad is out of the tropical hurricane zone, and we know they do not get hit by these disasters, and we know they’re a rich country in comparison to the small islands of the OECS, which leads to the second thing she should be aware of;

    (2) “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”; the OECS group is a major consumer market for Trinidad goods, you know, the low-to-medium quality but very expensive goods they ship and we buy because we consider them brothers and sisters; the same goods we protect thru various tariffs. We have just begun to explore trade with Brazil, producers of quality goods that generally cost the same or less – maybe, just maybe one day we may decide that Brazil’s products are of superior quality, that Brazil helps us in our time of need, and that we will reciprocate by purchasing Brazil products instead of Trinidad’s – am just saying, that may happen, she should be careful.

To the folks who are quick to name call over the comment on racism.
The average Dominician knows nothing about the racial division which exists in TnT.
The extent and the ugly truth. It exists and is a fact.
But that is not the point with regard this story.
    Did someone say CSME? ?
The trade practices within the islands is for the most part a one way street. Visit any supermarket in the islands and do product origin survey, Made in Trinidad, Made in Trinidad. We import their goods, services, expertise. What does Trinidad import from Dominica?
Ms TnT’s PM’s statements are out of line and insultive. Worst still, these are not her first such statements. She had already said that TnT is not an ATM for the islands.
If the islands were to boycott TnT products, we would be hearing another slant.

What a sad thing for the PM of T & T to say. What has happened to the humanitarian aspect of help? I noticed she used the example of housing assistance. If she were to use, say, the example of, assistance in the form of food and water, would she have said, that any food and water given, should be used only by the “builders and companies” handling housing assistance?

What this Indian, coolie woman think nuh. That is how these racists Indiands behave when placed in a position of power. Pure arogance and contempt for the rest of us “black” Caribbean folks. That’s is why I am still angry with Manning for calling an election so early and allowing this jezebel into power. I say we should boycott ALL TNT products NOW to put this woman in her place!!!
