GUADELOUPE – History was created in France on Sunday, March 14, when outgoing President of the Regional Council in Guadeloupe, Victorin Lurel, was re-elected in the first round of regional elections for the first time in France with 58.37 percent of the electorate voting in his favor.
Lurel, a representative of the Socialist party, won in every constituency except the constituency of Terre-de-Bas in the Saints (Les Saintes). Nine groups of 43 persons contested the elections.
The Presidential UMP party came in second, together with the other candidate, which amassed 41.63 percent of the votes. In every other region in France, including the overseas departments of Martinique and Guyane, voters will return to the polls for the second round on Sunday, March 21 to elect.
