Leading Caribbean historian Dr Lennox Honychurch has lamented the failure of regional politicians to forge Caribbean unity and has criticised what he describes as unhealthy drive towards materialism which he says is being copied from the United States.
Noting that only the UWI and the West Indies cricket team showed some semblance of regional unity, Honeychurch pointed to the lack of cohesiveness among Caribbean nationalities.
Honychurch, an Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence 2011 laureate in Arts and Letters, was speaking at a lecture on Monday, one of a series being delivered at UWI by Sabga laureates at the Learning Resource Centre at the University of the West Indies’ St Augustine Campus.
I agree with Mr Honeychurch. If the Caribbean is going to have any standard internationally we must unit. We are simply to small to be represented indivdually against giants like the USA and Europe. Also it begins with the people. No one seems to care for these important articles as much as they do for the purly BETH ones. You should see the amount of comments on the article about the man loosing his eye. Here where something impoertant is being revised, Dominicans don’t care. SMH
talk about a double edged sword in your mouth lennox…… las parle asi kote!
I second that
It’s sad but Mr Honychurch is so right…just recently The B.V.I just imposed visa requirement on Jamaicans and in retaliation Jamaicans imposed visa requirement on B.V.Islanders.. One island looking down at another, feeling superior… Our ancestors must be crying, was their struggle for black liberation and advancement in vain? Truly, our history must be accurately revisited, perhaps then Caribbean nationals will embrace each other. Our future development and growth depends on this unity.
Yes if the Caribbean was better united the queen of England (our slave masters) would not be displayed so vividly on our EC dollar.
Interesting…..he does not seem to take this stand publicly in Dominica….re food security, agriculture ….
