St. Lucia: Cannabis Movement calls on PM Chastanet to state intentions on cannabis law reform

Prime Minister of St. Lucia Allen Chastanet

In light of the fact that the annual CARICOM Heads submit is rapidly approaching in July of this year, where the CARICOM Cannabis Commission will be presenting their recommendations, as well as the fact that Canada will also be legalizing federally in July, plus statements made by both Prime Ministers’ Ralph Gonsalves and Gaston Browne to the effect that they will be reforming their cannabis laws, the Cannabis Movement of Saint Lucia is requesting of Prime Minister Allen Chastanet to make a public statement making the intentions of this administration known regarding cannabis law reform.

As stated in an earlier news brief, the Cannabis Movement is said to be getting mixed signals regarding the intentions of this administration and need them to clarify.

These are the reasons for saying so:

1. The original members of the local cannabis commission created by Mr Hermingale Francis and presented to cabinet in January 2017 were rejected by members of his own cabinet, even though the members of the original commission were all experts in the field.

2. No budgetary allocations were put in place in order for the new commission created in March 2017, to do the work that they were meant to do. As a result, minimal work was done by the commission for the year.

3. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not adequately facilitate the mandated visit by the CARICOM Cannabis Commission in September of 2017. The commission was able to visit nine other territories without a hitch except Saint Lucia because of Ministry administrative facilitation.

4. There has been no interest shown by the Ministry of Agriculture even though cannabis cultivation is one of the biggest agricultural trends worldwide.

The reformation of cannabis laws was a campaign promise and it is uncontainable that this administration would not follow through with that promise after being elected.

The Cannabis Movement is eagerly awaiting a public response from the Prime Minister.

these politicians have no real interest. Apart from Gonzalves and Brown and the Jamaican PM. the rest are still in their brainwashed colonial mindstate that marijuana is an evil dangerous drug. It is because it allows you to think freely and question authority. They dont like that at all, when you question them

lmaooo. Clearly these politicians have NO intention of reforming your laws about Cannabis St. Lucia. They are stringing you along. But because the rest of the world is genuinely interested in the matter, they want to SEEM as though they are also, especially if it means they will get votes. SAME THING HERE IN DOMINICA> it was a hot topic last election, i am sure it will be again in the upcoming one for Dominica. But it will not be touched. Our politicians the majority of them are hypocrites. Majority of them still believe marijuana is a dangerous drug and that it causes people to do crimes. this is what they have been brain washed with. and have believed this all their adult lives. for example our Attorney General, i am sure he staunchly personally disapproves of anything marijuana. thus the rest of the country suffers because of his belief and bull headedness. Our PM will come on the block where it is smoked and act like he is one of the boys but he doesnt approve of the use of it.

Meanwhile Dominican police still inflicting misery on its citizens for weed. They just in the last few days scoped and surveillance, vehicle full of police, gas expense, maybe sleepless – slept in the bush, used informant(s), occupied, not available to check serious crime etc etc. just to catch a guy in the mountains on Morne Prosper with some weed. been doing this to citizens for the past 50 years. Even this has failed miserably, it’s time to (not decriminalize) legalize Marijuana. Quit inflicting pain and imprisonment on our citizens. Seriously!
