PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — At least 21 people were missing or dead after Tropical Storm Tomas swept over the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia as it headed toward Jamaica and the tent cities of Haiti.
An American tourist was reportedly among those killed.
Tomas weakened to a Tropical Depression early Wednesday, but was forecast to pick up strength over the next two days and a hurricane watch for Jamaica was issued by the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Haiti, the Dominican Republic and southeastern Cuba were also warned to monitor Tomas’s progress with forecasters warned of a “significant threat” to those areas later this week.
At 5 a.m. ET, the storm was about 410 miles south-southwest of Haiti’s Port-au-Prince and moving west-northwest at about 5 mph.

@Television:
When a hurricane or other disaster strikes, it has absolutely nothing to do with poor engineering.
There are those who build houses and other buildings in such a manner, stating that they are constructed in the event of an earthquake, high winds or tornadoes that they will be secure. These people are so wrong.
You all are in our prayers Lucians. We know what itis to be without water, electricity and even our basic needs. Hold on God will provide. Doors will be opened.
we have a brother in St.Lucia and we have not heard from him.i am praying all is well with him and his family.i feel for the countries hit by Tomas,but i want to hear my bro’s voice,just to know all is well.
what at a shame .i sorry for haiti and st lucia
Didnt realize it was that serious..that shld b on cnn man..
@Television: of all things that u find to type on the net,,,,,”poor engineering” that says alot,,,,,,,i hope all the best n a speedy recovery for our sister isle,,,, well if is not b/dos n jamaica,,,,trinidad not in it so i not surprised by that statement,,,,,,
OMG. Look at the damage caused to the roads…Castries even flooded.
Poor engineering!!!
And in light of all this, the Trini Pm made a very callous statement yesterday stating that no free assistance will be given to Caricom countries affected by Hurricane Tomas. I hope DNO publish that story, as it showcase how divided we as caribbean nations, can still be. Lives were lost in St Lucia. Haiti once again might be seriously affected, along with Jamaica and DR, and here u have Trinidad and Tobago wanting to provide paid assistance! We are talking humanity, not self gained. There is a drive to boycott TnT products because of that. I certainly will.
We pray for the restoration of our sister island St.Lucia and also that Haiti will be spared cause only God knows how much more these people can bear. As part of the Caribbean community, let’s lend a helping hand Dominica; any way we can
