Trinidad rape victim marries accused, case thrown out

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Friday August 19, 2011 – More than three years after being charged with raping a teenager, a 30-year-old man was yesterday relieved of the burden of facing a trial when his alleged victim told the court that they were now married and had a child.

Wayne Sahadath was allowed to go free after the disclosure was made to Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar.

The alleged victim, who is now 17 years old, told the magistrate that not only were she and Sahadath married, but they had a three-year-old daughter.

Sahadath had been arrested and charged with the rape in March 2008 and had been on bail awaiting trial.

I guess he may have made a marriage arrangement with the family to escape punishment. Now he can divorce her and be free. Why should the case take three years and why should he be free to roam about for that length of time? This proves to us that caricom and the caribbean court of justice will not work in the best interest of we the ordinary bare foot citizens.

As I have said before, they need to review their age of consent laws and I will stick to my position. Sixteen years is too high, it needs to be reduced to 13.

When they are young they have better child bearing capabilities. I am so happy for the couple. It is time for our men to stand up in Dominica and take responsibilities. We need to marry some 13 and 14 year old.

      @ Muslim

You are referring to a child-bride? At that age? Shame on you. Thirteen to seventeen years is too young. The child has not yet lived, not schooled enough and is not ready to assume such a responsibility of being a wife to a man who may be much older than she is. This could also lead to child and wife abuse and no exception murder as sometimes occur and more often than we may know of.

Thats bullshit. The child was 14yrs at the time. Regardless of what happens now, he should be made to pay for having sex with a minor. That is where the law should be most effective. Well i guess another crminal goes free. Hope he will not do it again,,,and maybe to her too.

This situation has NOTHING to do with Stockholm Syndrome! 1. Stockholm Syndrome has to do with victims who were kidnapped and held hostage.Rape Trauma Syndrome (RTS) is the term applied to rape victims.

Howevever, this does not seem to be a case of RTS, from what I read. It seems like a classic case where a man is charged with statutory rape ONLY because of the girl’s age and not because she was actually raped by him.

Seems like this couple is doing just fine with their child so i don’t see the point of attacking the guy and calling him a rapist. Just my 2 cents!

No with parents consent u can marry at any age including nine also there are some place that allows 16/17 yrs u are old enough to make ur own decisions so ur parents can’t tell u what to do and make u marry

    • Some Sense
      August 19, 2011

in some places with a parent’s consent the child can get married even if that child is 9. In other place (America) 16 or 17 yr olds can get married without a parents consent because the state has realized that the child is old enough to make decisions on there own, they know what is right and wrong. That doesn’t mean that they can leave on there own they are aren’t adults (because they are not recognized as an adult yet)18 yrs is just the official age where you can vote because in some countries you are recognized as an “adult” or a “semi- adult”.

I hope he does not start raping the 3yr old daughter because he married the victim from facing his sentencing. That man (rapist) did not get any kind of treatment. Once a rapist will always be a rapist; it’s like a drug.

Some of those young Indian girls always looking for a father figure. They stay in an abusive relationship or kill themselves or even marry the same man who abuse them.

He raped her at 14 and got her pregnant. She has a three year-old child for him. He may have been supporting the child and loves his daughter.
He married her in order to avoid sentencing. The case should have been called that very same year. It would have been interesting to read about the Court case then and what transpired between them.
It may be that they are in love. Who knows? I do hope that he will treat her with due dignity and respect as his wife. Time will tell for them.

either it wasnt rape at all or its just a classic case of Stockholm syndrome, where victims sometimes fall in love with their kidnappers…either way…its twisted yo!

      August 19, 2011

Calm down, your too damn educated for your own self, (stockholmes syndrome)HA…. This is a clear case of statutory rape, not any ofrcible rape but the idea that she was under age, it was rape under the law, she kept the baby, the baby is three years old which indicated to me that it was called raped when they found out the young lady was pregnant. So they were always together, it was unlawful because she was under age, she is of age now so they forgive the crime so they can move on with their lives.

      • Conscious
        August 19, 2011

I, too, suspect it may have been statutory rape. That is to say, the underage girl and the man may have had an affair. She consented to having sex with him. However, he was charged with rape becahse she was not at the age of consent at the time.

OR could it have been a case where she did not grant consent and for some reason she has forgiven him and fallen in love with him? Life is strange, you know.

It called Stockholm Syndrome (named after an incident in Stockholm, Sweden. The most known victim of Stockholm Syndrome is American Patty Hearst.
