UPDATE: St. Lucia PM declares weekend of mourning; political campaign suspended following tragic bus crash

Prime Minister of St. Lucia Stephenson King has declared a weekend of mourning following a tragic bush crash which left 17 people dead.

The decision was taken during an emergency session of cabinet earlier today in the aftermath of what has been described as a “national tragedy.”

Additionally all flags on Government buildings and business places were ordered be flown at half mast during the entire weekend (over the three day period).

Sunday, November 13th, 2011 has been declared a National Day of Remembrance. During that day there will be an Ecumenical Service to be held at the Desruisseux Roman Catholic Church from 5:00 pm.

An official Message of condolence will also place on the Government of Saint Lucian website.

During the weekend all political and public social events has been ordered suspended and the government called all patriotic Saint Lucians to observe fully the weekend of mourning as a mark of respect for the victims of the tragedy.

The Government of Saint Lucia said it has began putting measures in place to support and to comfort the bereaved.  The Ministry of Education has taken steps to make counseling services available to the students of the affected schools.  Through the Division of Human Services, arrangements are also being made to make such services available to the affected households, families and communities.

The catastrophe occurred in the Choiseul community of Morne Sion around 8:00 pm on Thursday evening.

Reports are that the bus was returning to Labayee from Choiseul after a funeral; but detoured to Delcer to pay respects to the family of the deceased. They were driving down the Morne Sion Road heading south to Choiseul village when the bus did not make the left turn, careening over the cliff and landing straight onto the beach, 120 feet below.

When rescuers arrived on the scene, three strewn bodies were seen on the beach being washed by the waves; two of them were apparently dead; but the third was showing signs of life. She was taken to the hospital but she didn’t make it.

However it wasn’t until the capsized bus – which was partially submerged by the wave action – was turned over that the full horror story struck. The first victim hoisted was a two-year old boy followed by a series of wet dead bodies. They were all put to lay on the beach.

The final count is now 17.

Emotional screams of sadness filled the air. A gentleman from Gertrine is reported to have lost his three children.

Minister of National Security and Home Affairs Guy Mayers has described the accident as one of the worst in the country’s history.

I am from Goodwill, Dominica but currently residing in de Outer-National. My heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and we also pray and support the ST LUCIA people as a nation during this tragic time. God has a purpose some how in this scenario. I believe that the ST Lucia government need to have mechanical experts and investigators to carefully examine the crash site and also the remnants of the bus to see if there was some kind of mechanical steering or brake failure which could have been a factor in this Bus Crash. I analyzed the photos and images carefully and the bus left the main road entirely and drove thru the yard of a nearby house and then plunged over the precipice. Does not make sense to me. The Bus had to have lights to see the bend in the road. If the driver was too fast, there would have been squeal tire marks somewhere on the road. It is a weird tragedy. Lord have mercee !! Then again, looking at the way the driver drove through the yard of that near by house, it also appears to me that the driver may have mistaken the yard area for the regular road….and then, the question still comes back………couldn’t he have seen the road that there was this horse shoe curve ahead? The Bus had head lamps obviously. Jah have mercee !!

My heart goes out to the families. Some people do not know the right thing to say when there is a tragedy so we have to excuse them. But my advise to the people in St.lucia who are close to the families, don’t feel obligated to make a comment, just sitting and listening may be good enough.

I am so sorry to the families that have lost their loved ones, only you can know what you are going through. Everything happens for a reason, and in God we must trust that he had other plans for these individuals. No one knows what really happened and why it happened. No survivors to tell the story. We as a people, must not judge or make assumptions as to what happened. This is the time that we should comfort the families who were stricken by such a horrible lost. It breaks my heart to think how horrified these people must have felt as they fell to their death and could do nothing about it. Though I have never been to St. Lucia, I hope to visit there one day. I have a wonderful friend Hayden who lives there. I am from St. Thomas, VI.

I’m looking that picture where bus drove through past the house… doesn’t make sense to me. Except if driving very fast, brakes give way and driver not knowing the road did not swerve. Could the driver have dozed off for one reason or the other???

Accident doesn’t feel right to me. Just saying.

Heartfelt condolences to St. Lucia. Tragedies like these will never be understood.

This is a tragedy yet a crime. This driver was from that area. Drove there all the time yet drove off the road like that. In the photos you can see no evidence he put on the brakes or tire marks showing he tried to correct or get back on the road. I have many conspiricy theories behind what happened there eh… bullshit. the driver was not from the area…..and looking at the pic it is clear to see that was an accident….imargin driving that road in the night….the driver did not know the road and followed the lights of the house…..now there is a curve at the house. i can imargin any driver going through the same during the night with a speed of 80kmph. he must have noticed that he was on the wrong road when he came unto the grass but it was already too late and there is no way of controlling a vehicle of that size on grass…figure it out people….thats the only logical explanation for this accident…may thier soul rest in peace

I am so hurt by this site, it scares me to see how one day you have your love ones here and the next they are gone. I looked at the pictures and want to know it they looked at the option that the bus driver may have driven off on purposes. I think it may be a possiblity and the police should look into that.

This is really sad. It’s even more heart-wrenching when you learn that these victims were mourners returning home from a funeral. I wonder what could have caused this. Could it be that the driver fell asleep at the wheel? Or the bus lost steering and brakes at the same time? Was he moving too fast to avoid the accident? I really don’t know. Whatever the cause is, this still remains one of the biggest tragedies in St. Lucian history.

My sincerest condolences to the people of St. Lucia and especially to those who have lost loved ones. Accidents happen but we never expect that they would hit home. I cannot begin to imagine how you all feel but I feel terrible.

To those who are speculating about the cause…while it is natural to wonder what really happened, there is a time and place for everything. Your natural curiosity/gossip should never be placed among well wishes and expressions of sympathy. It’s just insensitive. I believe that access to social networks has given people too much liberty to speak on issues but…THERE IS STILL A TIME AND PLACE FOR EVERYTHING AND THIS IS NEITHER THE TIME NOR THE PLACE!!

Again, my heart goes out to those who mourn. May you find solace in knowing that your loved ones are resting in the arms of Jesus.

  109. November 12, 2011

Where do we go from here, when test of faith has drawn near; touch our hearts, O God, and guide our lips in prayer.

Through Your Grace alone dear God, we can cast away these fears we now know, and free ourselves from the depths of deep despair.

Lead us through the darkness, and through each gloomy day. Take our hands O precious Lord, and guide us on our way. Give us strength, that we might find abiding faith and peace of mind; that we won’t ask where do we go from here.

People of St Lucia, you are grieving this weekend; many of us are not able to comprehend your pain. It is hard to say: I know what you are feeling, when I have not experienced your immediate pain.

But people of St. Lucia, if you are a God fearing people, know that God Almighty, in His body of Jesus Christ can identify with your pain.

Your experience now, is a test and trial–the way that God wants you to know that through your weakness, He is your strength; even if your loved one has passed away in this tragedy.

I promise you, that you will weep today, tomorrow, and the day after that. But if you continue with your trust in God, who is a Living God of Love, in Spirit and Truth, you will know His joy and peace, which is the engery of Life, moving you, regardless of the circumastance of your day.

You will know that the loved one, whom you have lost in this tragedy, is at peace in his/her subconscious sleep, waiting for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. For Jesus said: “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him near. And I must raise him on the last day.

I pray that your loved one, who has passed away in this tragedy, was someone that God Almighty has chosen. For Jesus will raise him/her on the last day. Amen

As a St.Lucian living in the US. my heart goes out to the families in this tragic situation but the Holy Bible says in Matthew 24 about the signs of His coming and we are not to take things lightly and we arenot to be surprised because this is the time of mourning and it i something we as humans can never get used to, but we are near the coming of His return we who are still alive and have a chance lets not only to do what is right but let us accet The creator hat when He calls us home we will be going to a better place because its only sorrow and hard time AQnd to the families I extend my sincere condolences and May the Lord strengthen you ad guide you because you certainly cannot look to man for spiritual strength, but physical ye man can offer.
The word of God also said ” Cast ALL your cres and burdens upon Him for He careth for you.I’ll pray that God will lighten your burdens because its all we as human can do. But trust God and our prayers are with the families.

:(   :( :( :( :( my heart is burden, it bleeds, for the families. When life seems heavy and strenght is no longer enough to carry, don’t give up, where our strenghts ends…the Grace of God begins. when sad think how many times you laughed than you cried, the pain lessens knowing they were loved by many. Such thoughts makes us happy :-D :) ….with love from BARBUDA

its a tragic moment for everyone of us in St. Lucia. Not only families and friends are suffering the effect of this great loss but everyone of us are either mother, father, brothers, sister… it could have been anyone of us or or any of our family members. I think therefore that we should take this opportunity to draw into relationships with our only source of help who is our FATHER which art in HEAVEN.

The Government of St. Lucia needs to do something urgently about some of the roads in St. Lucia. I know it will be costly but they should put black & white zebra barriers that reflect at night so as to help on the impact of vehicles or that persons can recognized them and are aware of the kind of bend in the road. Must be seriously looked into. Help save lives.

This is very tragic, to say the least. I extend sincere sympathy to those who are left to mourn. Whatever the cause of the accident, whether human error or otherwise, it seems strange. If the driver was familiar with the area he could not have gone over the cliff. Anyway, these are days when tragic things occur, and we must be prepared at all times to meet our Maker, to whom we must give account for how we spend our lives. May we all be ready to leave this sphere at any moment.

looks to me like he just continued driving..that little stretch near the house may have been confused with the actual road….and if he was driving at a certain pace by the time he realized the bus would’ve been of the cliff already. it was nighttime so even if he wasnt driving fast..he maybe wasnt driving slow either. could happen to any of us…if you’re a driver you will know how much time you say “Papa God look i nearly die” to yourself. Tragic.

Notice this happened on the eve of 11.11.11 add them up and what do you get? Also, on a full moon. Coincidence? I think not. There is more to this story than meets the eye. In Viuex Fort, St.Lucia south, an alleged ‘ti bolom’ was found. People with black berries should have seen it by now.

May God comfort the hearts, and may He continue to look over the bus drivers throughout the region, because our terrain does not make it easy and sometimes enough caution is not taken.

Are you gusy serious? The person is so right. I was home for the summer (last); my brother who resides at home ask, rather enthusiatically to comment on the “development” of the roads in Dominica. He went codl when I told him that I am in no way a road engineer, but there is a lot lacking, in terms of the “phsychology” of road building – no guard rails to giv the comfort of safety, for example.

Sorry, but the West Coast Road Rehabilitation misses the mark.

I mourn for the fatalities and especially those who have lost love ones in this St. Lucina tragedy. Still, it is important that we recognize the need to exercise caution when using our roads, and to implore our decision makers to take all into account when developing our roads.

Dear DNO, was happy when I read “DNO has also obtained photographs of the accident but has decided not to publish them because of the nature of this tragedy.” Please utilize the same sense of care and concern for accidents in DA. Still upset about the photos posted of the lady trapped in that bus before Colihaut.

Yes that was terrible, however respect to DNO for moving on and now applying caution. If there are non sensitive pics then show them but leave the gruesome ones well alone.

Those who want gruesome don’t look for them on DNO or encourage DNO to post them.. Shame on you!

Oh my GOD!! how ironic may they find strength in their faith and the nation. This reminds me of the Morne Prosper and Bagatelle disaster. Father GOD wrap your hands around these families and the entire island of St Lucia
