ALIVE WORD: Politicians, stand up and be counted

Reflections from 1998 Calendar of the late Ivan Dawson (my dad):

After spending 25 years in active politics, I look back and thank God for giving me the opportunity to serve my country in this special way.

Politics is very serious business.  One should enter the political arena with integrity, honesty and the fear of God.  It calls for commitment to the country and the people.  As a politician, I put God first in my personal life and in all the affairs of Government.  In that way I knew that whatever I do must please God and I was first accountable to Him and then to the people.  It was God who helped me to accomplish my goal as a politician.

Politicians, trust God to direct and give you wisdom to guide the people in the right direction.  It is God who ultimately promotes and demotes.  According to the prophet Micah, God requires us to exercise justice, be merciful and walk humbly with Him.

The challenges continue to mount as we approach the 21st century but God remains faithful to His Word.  The Word of God tells us in Psalm 33:12 “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord”.

Some people believe that a politician cannot be a Christian.  That belief is unsound. God is looking for trust-worthy people to lead our country in the right direction.  Can He count on you?

I challenge you today politicians, to stand up and be counted as politicians who fear and trust God – who pray daily for our country and its people and live a life that pleases God.

If you would like to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour say this prayer.

Dear God,

In the name of Jesus Christ, I acknowledge that I am a sinner and that I need a Saviour.  Forgive me of all my sins and cleanse me from all unrighteousness.  Your Word says in Romans 10:9 and 10 that if I confess with my mouth the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in my heart that God raised Jesus from the dead I shall be saved.  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.  I now confess Jesus Christ as Lord of my life.  In Jesus Name.  Amen.

This is a thought provoking article. I am surprised that not more people commented.

A politician can indeed be a Christian and it seems this gentleman was. In the Old Testament we have two Prime Ministers who knew the Lord, and looked forward by faith to the coming of the Messiah. They were Joseph and Daniel.

The pressure to conform to this world are great upon Christian politicians but thank God there are those who stand true. They can make a difference. They can save their nation from ruin. Christians should find out where their candidates stand on the great moral issues before election time and vote for those who will do what is right for the nation in the sight of God.

Christian politicians should remember that God said He would honor those who honor Him and promotion cometh not from the east or the west or from the south, but it is God who puts down one and raises up another.

Politicians who live and rule by these principles will be true people of faith: men and women of sterling character honored by God and history!

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.
