Former calypsonian ordained Catholic deacon

Newly ordained deacon Branker John (left) being introduced

Former calypsonian Branker John was ordained a Roman Catholic deacon at a ceremony held at the St. Peter Church in Colihaut on Sunday afternoon.

John is well known by his calypso name ‘De Brakes’ and was crowned Calypso Monarch in 1997 and 1999.

He left the island in 2000 to study in the United States and will be ordained a priest at a later date.

The ceremony was presided over by Bishop of Roseau Gabriel Malzaire who pointed out John’s new role as a deacon. Among them are, according to the bishop, proclaim the gospel, prepare the sacraments, instruct believers and non-believers alike in God’s ways, conduct baptisms and funerals, bring the sacraments to the dying, among others.

He told the new deacon that service to others, especially the poor and less fortunate, must be the hallmark of his ministry. “Love the people sincerely and characterize your ministry by prayer,” he said.

John is from the village of Colihaut and is the son of Gretta Philogene and Blaize John. He worked in many government ministries including the fisheries division, the department of Local Government and Community Development as a Community Development Assistant and District Development Officer, among others.

In 1999 he was appointed senator in the parliament of Dominica.

He ran as a United Workers Party candidate for Colihaut in the 2000 general elections but lost.

He is well known in the calypso arena for his hit songs “Remember me the Malaway”, “Keep the Candles Burning”, “Jam De Brakes on Dem” and “Workers”.

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I am not even sure how to refer to my dear brother Branker, but I am sure that this solemn vocation demands that I give you all the respects that this great ordination calls for or demands. So, from hence forth my dear brother, you shall be called Fr. Brancker John or simply…Fr. John.

Some of the comments are so unbecoming with the name calling and unkindness. We can make our comments with love and care.

This country is becoming so vicious and you ADMIN CAN assist in making us a more loving, caring people by not publishing the disrespectful comments and name calling.

If you do that, then we all will begin to write decent and constructive pieces without character assassinations.

    Thank you sir.

I am pleased to read the numerous ‘congratulations’ to the new Deacon, John. Keep praying for him as you do for the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, the Bishops, Priests and other members of the laity as you do for yourself. We are the Church.

Deacon John, congratulations. You have chosen the righteous path to priesthood which God has called you for. You do know that God is with you and all the Heavenly Court. Nothing pleases Our Lord Jesus Christ more than to see the one who He inspired and called has accepted “The Call.”
His Blessed Mother, Our dear Lady is also with you. Whenever I think of a Priest or even see one, I remember the book which is entitled, “To The Priests, Our Lady’s Beloved Son” which contains messages of Our Lady to Father Gobbi of Italy who received interior locutions from her which I have read. I like to say to the parish Priest or another Priest I know, whenever I talk to them, “Our Lady’s Beloved Son.”
Your parents and family are obviously elated and proud of you about your decision to become a Deacon and then a Priest. My prayers are with you Deacon.
God bless you. May Our Lady cover you with her mantle of love and protection.

      3:8 Likewise [must] the deacons [be] grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
3:9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
3:10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being [found] blameless.
3:11 Even so [must their] wives [be] grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
3:12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
3:13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. [1 Timothy 3:8-13]

Mwenmem,my point is YOU are so wrong.(1)For argument sake,Paul chose not to marry he could if he wanted 1 Corinthians 9;5.(2)Can you show me in the bible where it is said SEVERAL OF THE APOSTLES WERE NOT MARRIED?.(3)You wrote,
“We can serve as married men or unmarried”.
You know this is not true.According to the Roman church priest, bishop, etc,etc cannot marry
(4)Matthew 19:29 have nothing to do we religions like the Roman church putting it’s followers under bondage with draconian rules saying bishops, priest Popes and what have you must be unmarried.Do you know that Peter who you say was the first pope was a married man? 1 Cor 9:5.
I refuse to comment about my Savior was unmarried. In closing remember His mission on earth was to die 4 u and I

I have always held the view that the church is the most powerful institution in Dominica. Somehow witnessing the transformation of this young man from entertainer to politician and now to the clergy speaks to the ultimate power of the church. Call it spiritual, cultural, calling, faith; it is still what is is–the undeniable power and reach of the church and the reality that religion -not necessay spituality- is a formidable force in our small society. According to an earlier song: ‘I will remain Catholic’.

Having said that, whatever Mr.John chooses to do with his life should be respected and we should wish him well. Maybe he will contest Colihaut as a politcal candidate again down the road and he will certainly win because of his deaconship.

      @ Luke

The Catholic Church in all democratic countries is a powerful one. Why? Our Lord Jesus Christ established it. Recall what He said to Peter: “Thou art Peter and upon this Rock I will build My Church…” This is The Church Our Lord established on earth.
Catholic means, ‘Universal”. It was Our Lord’s intention that everyone in the entire world will recognize it and worship in It. The night before Our Lord’s passion, crucifixion and death, “He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane that ‘all might be one’.” I often ask, “what happened” to cause this type of division and disunity. Well, I know. Sadly, the smoke of Satan set in and caused divisions and other ungodliness. Read about the history of the Catholic Church (if you have not yet done so) and who caused the division, who broke away from it and for what reason, commencing with Luther and Henry VIII who encouraged others to renounce their Catholicism. I often wonder where their souls are in eternity.
I am not a Catholic for nothing. I did not remain in the Catholic Church for nothing. I know which Church Our Lord established and that He is the cornerstone of the Catholic Church.
Know too that the Catholic Church is the most persecuted Church in the entire world. Satan fears it because he knows which church is the One True Church that Our Lord Jesus Christ established which is why he, Satan, influences the enemies of the Church to persecute/lambaste. To be a Catholic is also to be fully aware of this. God inspires. God bless you with this enlightenment.

while “Brakes” has demonstrated good intention in following the Lord, I firmly believe that he has fallen prey to religious delusion. First he can’t be married to the church – as he assumes – because the church is the BRIDE of Christ. Second, he must read the scriptures carefully to understand what it means to be a priest. Thirdly, he must seek to put the Word of God above religious traditions if he wishes to fulfill any mission for Christ.
I admire the solemnity of the occasion but it’s really an exercise in futility except he be born again. Brakes, take heed to the Word of God, and not to traditional ritualism.

fyi, at Mass, the priest (which Deacon John will soon be) acts in the person of Christ, our Head. Thus, through his priestly ministry, the priest is, in fact, married to the Church — the bride of Christ. Have some faith in Deacon John; no priest remains faithful to the call without support and prayer from the laity.

#3, If you you listen carefully to the news, youwill hear that he is not a priest yet, he is a deacon.

Why we DOMINICANS like to trash down each other and do like we know everything?

You should probably concentrate on living as a christian rather than fighting others! Learn to respect other religions and love instead of hate. If a young man giving his life to God can instill this tone from you, then maybe you should read your bible a little more. Thank God where I am, christians and other religions work together and for the common good while respecting each other. It feels more like a universal acceptance of God and working towards peace in the world rather than fighting each other about what is the right way to worship.

He being a Deacon or a priest does not preclude him from being calypso king does it?- if the Lord calls him to minister the word through calypso why not; Jerry Lloyd did it a couple years back – if that is not acceptable then the majority of us who go to those shows are heading down an ungodly path then! Maybe Deacon John should use his talents to help influence the lyrics in calypso and make it more pro-Jesus and Godly ever thought of it this way!

After reading this article, and the comments by my fellow readers I opened my bible just to see whether what is being said about Mr.John becoming a Deacon is according to the word of God.

In 1 Timothy 3:8-13, Paul the apostle spelled out the qualifications of a deacon.Especially verses 11 and 12 I we read.

“Their wives must be thoughtful, etc, etc and the next verse, Deacons should have only one wife and they should have happy, obedient children”

One person wrote,”He have one more year of lessons and then will be ordained as priest”.

Friends do you know that Peter a bishop, was a married man? Matthew 8:14.
Again do you know that every one who accept Christ as his or her Saviour is a priest.
Before I end, friends we need to know the BIBLE,but first we need to be saved.Jesus said I come to seek and to save lost sinners. Luke 19:10.

Please don’t vex with me for this article. I love you so is the Saviour

Paul was not a married man. Jesus was not a married man and from what we can read in the Bible several of the Apostles were not married men. We can serve as married men or unmarried men. Also read KJV Matthew 19:29 to realise the call is universal and complete. ” Everyone” who leaves “everything” including wife and children for His namesake will be rewarded with eternal life. These were the words of the Son of God. Not Peter or Paul. Jesus’ words so what’s your point?

There are 2 types of deacons: transitional deacons (who will be ordained priests) and permanent deacons (who can be married). Yes, while we know that St Peter, the first pope, was married, (after all, he had a mother in law whom Jesus healed) the priests of the Western Roman Catholic Church are not allowed to marry. It would take too long to explain why here, so I advise you to read up about it on some good Catholic websites, or the Catechism of the Catholic Church, or to visit a priest to get an explanation. Look and listen here J.J. Charles. GET LOST!  You are as blind as a bat and also deaf when it comes to matters of the Catholic Church. Otherwise you would not have left it. You were once a Catholic who renounced your Catholic faith and devotions. You are no expert on the Holy Bible and the Word of God. Furthermore, the religion you worship in has interpreted and distorted Holy Scriptures to suit its mentality.
I expected that Satan would come out of the woodwork and through your mind, heart, lips and fingers through the keyboard. There is nothing more that gets Satan angry when he sees someone get closer to God and to the Catholic Church. What would the enemy of God and of our souls not do and say as he influences people as you.
J.J. Charles, there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church. I would like to explain this further but some other time if I feel like it and if God wants me to explain it to you, who turned enemy of the Catholic Church.
Our Lord said, “Do not give what is holy to the pigs/dogs, lest they tramble upon it and tear you to pieces.” Read that passage.
Catholics know that the Saviour loves them after all they worship the Saviour. They do not need people as you to tell them. Go and tell that to the godless as the athiests and agnostics.

Congratulations are in order. You have made your family and us Dominicans proud. You’ve placed a song of joy in our hearts. If we follow your career path well we will see that you were choosen for your current appointment. You were always serving others, clearly characteristic of the servants if the Lord. You were being trained giving credence to the saying “when the student is ready the teacher appears.”. You are ready and the Lord will guide and instruct you in your assignments. like Fr. Thomas the well known song writer and singer I am confident that you will also use this medium as the father sees fitting to help God’s children. Continue to help the calypso artform as a judge or workshop facilitator. “To whom much is given much is expected.” I see you being a front runner spearheading programs to help young people and the masses in general. I am happy you answered the call “well done good and faithful servant.” obedience to God is key otherwise we face the wrath. The father will bless you with gifts that he will instruct you in utilizing them for self and other. Like David (small stature taking down Goliath) you are favored and you will touch lives for God’s glory. We stand with you offering prayers for you and all of Dominica (those abroad included.). Someone stated that Deacon John stated his “caca Boeying.”. That’s o.k. and what is even better is that he goes before you paving the way. I will say again it is o.k. For when we arenervous or have questions God already has the answers and with complete reliance on him we see the manifestation of his world through is. God is awesome. This is an honor being bestowed upon you by God; just be ready to let him do the work through you. Well done and continue on your journey knowing that like MJ said it best “you are not alone” we support you in spirit and in truth. I end by saying Thank you Lord!

I’ll be upfront and admit that his decision to become a priest caught me off guard, but I’ve accepted it.. When God calls we may not always understand but we have to obey.
I wish him all the best on his journey!!! May God guide his path!

May Allah guide you to Islam Mr. John. We were created to worship Allah alone without partners.

This path you have chosen is not from the Lord of the Universe. Jesus Christ (p) did not teach a trinity or used a mediator besides Allah in worship.

      Afro-Muslim

You may be in the wrong country. How about taking a trip to Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the likes? This is where you belong. Not in the western world. Your so-called religion and belief came long after the Catholic Church was established. Our Almighty Father, God does not recognize any religion which His Blessed Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ did not establish when He was on earth. Therefore, take a back seat which is where you are. Stay there and leave us Christian Catholics alone. Otherwise, you persecutor, face the wrath of God.

@ Injustice and falsehood: How many unitarians were slaughtered by Catholics? The early followers of the Messiah did not believe in the trinity. This pagan belief came 3 centuries after Christ peace be upon him left.

Secondly, Iraq and Afghanistan are at war now, there is an Islamic awakening going on right now and jihad is the way forward to liberate the Muslims. After the Islamization of Europe, the Geo-politics will change and America will have to reckon with us! Islam will dominate the world even if the pagans hate it! Allahu Akbar!

In one of the posts above, the writer described Deacon Branker, a.k.a. “Brakes” as being of petit stature. Well the step that Branker took today was a “big step” for the faithful, for his family and for al lthose who know him. First time I ever saw Brakes was on the night of the finals when he sang “Remember Me the Malewe”. He was passing through the crowd with a kontan on his back, and I was saying to myself, who is this person walking around the olkace with lmost no shirt and a kontan on his back? Well, now we all know. It’s choir member, turn calypsonian, turn politician, turn parliamentarian, turn Deacon!! Keep the candle burning Brakes, and if you have to, then put the brakes on dem. You are not going to do it officially for the malewe!

With all the mess The Catholic Churches all over the world are involve with, lawsuits upon lawsuits by young and old men, i would not advise no young man to gone the list of sex molesters, then man need to be married have a family, so when temptation come they will live the altar boys alone

I could remember growing up with one priest i think he is from that same village he could not resist the temptation he is now married

      • Reporter
        May 31, 2012

The % of the other religion involve in other things is far higher than the RC Church. The differnce is they keep those issues in their closet. The are all the same married or unmarried, you just have to put your trust in the LORD…The priest and pastors only there to guide us

Well, let me inform you, you who are not intelligent to know this. God placed all colors in the world and people who possess different minds to see how well we can live and interact with one another in love, harmony and peace. If you cannot do this and are insulting to your brother, another human being, you have failed the test. I am afraid, if you do not worship God, repent, make penance and restitution for your sins and what you have stated, you are missing the boat of eternal salvation and Satan has already taken possession of you and your soul. You moron, God wants reparation. Submit yourself to God and conform to His Most Holy Will before it is too late for you.

At this stage he can perform several religious rites but he is not yet a priest. For example he can assist with a marriage but he cannot perform one by himself.

He has one more year of lessons. God willing, next year at this time, he will be ordained as a priest.

Brakes has had a wealth of experience in many walks of life in Dominica. He has achieved a lot in his short life thus far. Against this background, it is apparent that he is very firm in his decision to become a priest. I hope he does not limit himself to serving solely as a priest although this would be his primary interest.
