What is Ash Wednesday?

ash wednesdayAsh Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Its official name is “Day of Ashes,” so called because of the practice of rubbing ashes on one’s forehead in the sign of a cross. Since it is exactly 40 days (excluding Sundays) before Easter Sunday, it will always fall on a Wednesday—there cannot be an “Ash Thursday” or “Ash Monday.” The Bible never mentions Ash Wednesday—for that matter, it never mentions Lent.

Lent is intended to be a time of self-denial, moderation, fasting, and the forsaking of sinful activities and habits. Ash Wednesday commences this period of spiritual discipline. Ash Wednesday and Lent are observed by most Catholics and some Protestant denominations. The Eastern Orthodox Church does not observe Ash Wednesday; instead, they start Lent on “Clean Monday.”

While the Bible does not mention Ash Wednesday, it does record accounts of people in the Old Testament using dust and ashes as symbols of repentance and/or mourning (2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:1; Job 2:8; Daniel 9:3). The modern tradition of rubbing a cross on a person’s forehead supposedly identifies that person with Jesus Christ.

Should a Christian observe Ash Wednesday? Since the Bible nowhere explicitly commands or condemns such a practice, Christians are at liberty to prayerfully decide whether or not to observe Ash Wednesday.

If a Christian decides to observe Ash Wednesday and/or Lent, it is important to have a biblical perspective. Jesus warned us against making a show of our fasting: “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen” (Matthew 6:16-18). We must not allow spiritual discipline to become spiritual pride.

It is a good thing to repent of sinful activities, but that’s something Christians should do every day, not just during Lent. It’s a good thing to clearly identify oneself as a Christian, but, again, this should be an everyday identification. And it is good to remember that no ritual can make one’s heart right with God.

Elizabeth, I take the liberty of trying to get this to the very top with the hope you will read it and it might help you to stop making yourself a yellow Baboon as you are!

The word ‘pagan” is defined as “a follower of a polytheistic religion as in ancient Rome. A pagan is someone who has little or no religion, and who delights in sensual pleasures, and material goods, we are talking about irreligious, or hedonistic people, some are in the world today, you might be one of them!

What I do know, and very sure of is God said First to the Jews, and then to the Gentiles. What he said was teach his words first to the Jews, whom we know to this day some have rejected it. In that case he said since they rejected it; take it to the Gentiles.

He could also mean teach his words to the Jews first, and then teach the Gentiles second!

And by the way I read everything you said about me when you responded to Gary, in any event none of that rubbish will make me marry to you! Cat want…

For those of us who believe in the God of Heaven as the creator of mankind and the giver and sustainer of life and Jesus Christ (the Word made flesh) His son who was sent to redeem man to himself after the fall of Adam we MUST submit and accept the Holy Bible as the spoken Word of God and our manual for living a life pleasing to our Creator. If we do then we should also accept that the Gospel, in a nutshell, is REPENT (turn AWAY from sin/evil and turn TO God through His son, Jesus Christ). It is not a seasonal thing but a lifelong, ongoing way of life that requires us to shun not just evil, but even its mere appearance. Having done that and understanding that the wages of sin is death we no longer live to the flesh to satisfy its evil lusts but we live to God in holiness and righteousness, depending on His Holy Spirit to enable us to overcome. God’s goodness allows us to repent and every day we live is another opportunity to truly REPENT before it is eternally too late. Take Heed!

This religious garbage has nothing to do to “emancipate ourselves form mental” and spiritual slavery, according to our brother, Bob Marley. I have said it over and over, and over again, that religion is man-made and the tool that was used to enslave our fore-parents. This is 2016 and some of us are so scared to launch out and research the origin of all these teachings of men.
Spirituality and religion are two separate entity. We need to educate ourselves and stop holding on to these teachings that continue to divide us. Catholics against christians, christians against muslims. etc.,. People, it is time to retaliate against an oppressive system, that of religion.

“This religious garbage has nothing to do to “emancipate ourselves form mental” and spiritual slavery, according to our brother, Bob Marley.”

You are an idiot; indeed you have said it over, and over, since in the days of Cakafete you been writing nonsense. IF Bob Marley your god was capable of emancipating himself from mental slavery, he would have not smoked himself to death smoking marijuana, believing it would have cured his cancer!

If you were not stupid you would try to find the living God, you would have read the Bible, to try and educate yourself in the word of Jesus Christ.

Marley may also have his belief in Marijuana, but he believe in God also; or Jah as they called Jehovah; and Just incase you do not know some of his songs are copied out of the word of God: i.e. “by the rivers of Babylon where we sat down.” So, that song proves how ignorant and dumb you are!

How SAD it is to see pastors and the blind flock without a clue about the true origination of lent. Mixing a Christian and a pagan holiday by none other than the Roman Church. But you have to give it to them. It was a good strategy, using the bible… change a few things around, kill those that do not conform and what do you get TOTAL control of a mindless and fearful population. Go right ahead and worship Tammuz, i’m sure in Ezekiel 8:14 he was not referring to the PM. Some of us are not ready for the truth and some will never be ready. SO MOTE IT BE! go and seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.

It is true that the bible has no basis for Lent or Ash Wednesday. Nowhere in the scriptures does it make mention of Lent or Ash Wednesday. Tradition of men have corrupted the words of God, and that just what is being done when Ash Wednesday is imposed on people. It is also wrong(sinful) for those who claim to be ”christians”, are also partaking in Carnival. Carnival is sinful, it is the sin of revelling, Gal. 5: 21. Any one who takes part in Carnival is or has committed the sin of revelling

Mr. Hill in as much as what was said has some merit, the title Rev. does not belong to you but to God and God only. I would like you to read psalms 111: 9 and who does it belong to. Thanks

    • February 11, 2016

Mr. Donald I thank you for reading my comment and responding.

I am interested in what you have to say because I can tell you are a Bible believer, and you also believe in the separated walk of the child of God.

Psalm 111:9 does indeed say “…holy and reverent is his (God’s) name.” We know Jehovah’s name is holy and reverend, and of course this applies also to our Lord Jesus Christ. This does not mean the word cannot be respectfully used in other contexts.

In my country the title “reverend” means an individual has been given by his church the authority to perform the wedding ceremony, and this is accepted by government.

Please note that the Bible does not say ONLY God’s name is reverend even though in the absolute sense of course this is true.

Compare this with Psalm 148:13 where it says “(God’s) name alone is excellent.”

However, this did not stop Luke from respectfully addressing a man as “most excellent Theophilus…” in Luke 1:3. Luke was recognizing this man’s good character, and possibly his rank as he may have been a Roman army officer. This is in harmony with Christian principles. We are told “Render therefore to all their dues: … … … … honour to whom honour …”
        Romans 13:7.

Dr. Hill, whereas it said only he is reverend, that title should not be bestowed on any human!

Of all the disciples of Jesus Christ, and all of the Prophets: Paul, Moses, and all of the great men of the Bible not one of then had the title of Rev., and even Jesus Christ was called by his name.

        In Matthew chapter 23:7, 8, 9, 10,11. We read:

“And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi; Rabibi; But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.”

This Reverend thing among preachers is prestigious, these days many like to be called doctor, simple because they learn Luke was a medical doctor. The reality is a preacher is a servant of the people, according to Matthew Chapter 23:11 Sommeone looking forward to be…

Someone looking forward to be called Reverend is looking to be exalted, as we read in Matthew 23 vs 12 ” And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”

Now please do not take my comments based on the word of God personally, it is not about you it is simply, thus saith the Lord in his words. I have some of them in my family who are in organized religion such as the Methodist Church, I hear one of them in particular gets angry when he is not called ” Rev. Doctor” such and such oui!

We have to be careful you know, especially when we base our argument on one word. I am not here to condemned nor contradict your argument; nevertheless, in Galatians 5:21 we read: “Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Now; revellings can also be defined as “revelry” which is defined “noisy, partying, or merrymaking.” Now in Proverbs we read eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die. That is not a direct quote you can look it up we also know that Jesus attended a wedding where he turned the water into wine, and when the people drank it; it tasted better than what had ran out!

So to base your thoughts on revellings alone means you cannot even be noisy in your home; we have to know how to deal with it otherwise we will just sit there and do nothing. There is a part of Scripture which said ” pray without ceasing…

There is a part of Scripture which said ” pray without ceasing.” If you attempt to practice that literally that mean you would start praying today continuously till the day you die. I do not think that is what God mean.

  8. “Ash Wednesday commences this period of spiritual discipline”-News Article

Spiritual discipline should be the basic principle in the Life of a Christian, in that when this discipline begins, it must continue right into Eternity–the goal of a Christian is to become like God Almighty, the Lord in Jesus the Son in flesh and bones –the Body of Christ in Him.

The hour or the day that a Christian enters the process of Spiritual discipline is not known to him or her because it is the work of faith and the Holy Spirit. But that Christian will come to know what is happening in his or her Life, based on what is taking place in his or her mind–that is why the apostle Paul teaches us: ” Do not be conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind; so that you may know what is the good, acceptable and perfect will of God. Roman’s 12: 2

There can be no “Spiritual discipline” in a person whose mind remains carnal.

    • And so there is no way that Ash Wednesday and Lent can stand for “Spiritual discipline” in that this practice only last for a few days of the year. what about the rest of the year which would 325 days long?

If a person enters the stage of Spiritual discipline, that person is under the control and guidance of Holy Spirit; He does not guide that person into the worldly pleasures, its vile, and abomination practices–whenever and however they are conducted.

Spiritual discipline keeps the Christian in the practice of Life in Love–the practices which glorifies God’s Love and magnifies His name day in and day out; not just for 40 days of the year–for He is the One conducting those practices in the Christian person.

Lent, another figment of the Roman Catholics imagination, and false religion teachings. What is lent, and what does that have to do with the worship, and teachings of Jesus Christ?

    Absolutely nothing!

It is a another ritual devised by Roman Catholics, and the paganism mentality of their pope, designed to enslaved and deceive their followers; keeping them in bondage of false religion teachings and doctrines. They associate that with carnival because they told that lie that when they came to crucify Christ they found him in Carnival. I heard that lie as a kid growing up in Wesley.

As such the lying priests told the people it is a sin to participate in Carnival. All that crap of rolling rosary beads has nothing with God, the sing of the cross has nothing tod with God. I might be wrong, so I challenge anybody to direct me to where the Bible emphasized one should make the sign on the cross on their head!

  10. February 10, 2016

The Jesuits are known for their deception, spying, infiltration, assassination, and revolution. They worked deep into the political field and plotted through politics through out the world countries, the cross on your fore head is the Jesuits symbol of the inquisition, genocide and the holocaust.

  11. February 10, 2016

    Continuation.

The Bible tells us “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God demonstrates his love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being NOW justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.” (Romans 5:6-9)

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8,9.)

Those who think they can earn their salvation by their good works are never sure they are saved because they cannot know when they have done enough. Those who believe they are saved by trusting what Christ did for them on the cross know they are saved because of the promises of God.

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.

The Bible also says that faith without works is dead (James 2:14-26), so I don’t understand your conclusion Rev. Hill. You can’t have faith alone and you can’t have works alone. The two go together.

Everything the Catholic Church does is based on the Bible. Of course the Bible cannot talk about “Lent”. This is a special period in the Church in which we prepare ourselves for Easter and for the celebration of the resurrection – all of which are told int he Bible. We go on faith that the Bible is true and correct and we commemorate all the events in the life of Jesus. While the names of the feasts are not in the Bible, the reason for the feast and what we are celebrating is taken directly from the Bible. I invite you to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church to get a better understanding of the faith that true practicing Catholics follow.

      • Black Nobility
        February 10, 2016

You are using the bible as your single source of information, the same bible that was rewritten by the Catholic church to suite their agenda. You and the pastor should pray together.

      • @Too Hard Too Long February 10, 2016–“The Bible also says that faith without works is dead (James 2:14-26),”

Okay that statement was made by the apostle James–the half brother of Jesus’ Himself” But James was speaking to those who claim to have faith –but what do they do to show their to faith to witnesses?

Getting dressed to assemble with fellow Christians, on the day of meeting is not enough to convict non-believers about our relationship with God.

But that is what we fail to understand, that wants a relationship with us–through that relationship He will do the rest in us and through us, for His own glorification of His Love and magnification of His name.

Yes! Salvation must display our attitude of Love, but by faith, for that attitude is conducted by Holy Spirit in us–that is the reason Jesus told us through His disciples: Without Me you can do nothing @John 15–where He speaks about Love.

      • Through religion, people try to do good works with the understanding that they will receive Salvation for their good works, that is what the apostle Paul explains at Ephesians 2: 8-9–there is no amount of good works that can be done to receive Salvation–it all happens in us by our faith.

But when we have Salvation, faith goes into play to keeping walking in the Life of the Spirit doing the things of Love–those works of Love demonstrate in us–the characters of Joy, Peace, Goodness, Kindness, Patience, Endurance, Humility, and Self-control–all of which are the traits of Love–For God is Love.

We do these works of Love as Holy Spirit is guiding us to do so. And those works are done any day, any time of the day, day in and day out–there is no special day, week, or month when it is Love that we must do.

Any other rules or Laws is the doctrines and teachings of man–the works of religion which God has condemned.

      • February 11, 2016

Faith justifies us in the sight of God. Romans 5:1.

Works justify us in the sight of men. James 2:24.

However, works do not save us.

If a man says he is “saved” and is not doing good works he has only a false profession because Jesus said we will recognize “saved” people (born people or true Christians) by their fruit in Matthew 7:16.

A fig tree will produce figs because it is a fig tree. It does not produce figs to become a fig tree.
Saved people will do good works BECAUSE they are saved not to GET saved.

If a man has faith he will do good works! Please read Ephesians 2:8-10.

        NOTE:

We are saved “unto good works, not by good works. Now to get a better sense of what Paul is saying read the entire passage of Romans 4:1-7.

        Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist

    • “Those who think they can earn their salvation by their good works are never sure they are saved because they cannot know when they have done enough”–Reverend Donald Hil

Reverend Hill that is the best way to describe the minds of those people involved in their works of religion: “They are never sure they are saved”

It is very unfortunate, but many Christians do not know their stature of Salvation; most of those people believe that God will decide for them, on the other side of the grave that is why they believe that good works is the basis of Life in Jesus Christ, while they ignore His Love–the true nature of His work in and through them.

We have to be assured of our Salvation today, while we still exist in the body. Sadly many Christians will not stop thinking of themselves as sinners–even if they claim to have accepted Jesus many moons ago–how can a person be a sinner and a Christian at the same time–God forbids this!

    • @informative February 10, 2016–“we are all sinners”

First of all your thought above is the reason many like you remain in your cage of sin, in that you believe you are a sinner, so what is the difference! Like, why not drink and get drunk; why not join in the wild party of drugs or harmful substances, with the loud music of darkness; why not hate everyone; why not steal and kill; or lie to get what we want–there is more!.

That manner of thinking brings the other saying: Jesus will forgive us!

Well my friend Jesus did that forgiving act more than 2000 years ago–His suffering and dying was for our sinful sake–once and for all times. What we are supposed to be doing is to accept that great Sacrifice and to: “Go and sin no more”

The Bishop, priest or whoever, is not commanding us to be part of carnival– a worldly event–but they do not discourage us, when every year there is a speech about how much fun we can have at that event. Bottom line!

      February 10, 2016

The Church did not institute carnival to follow lent. Lent is a season celebrated by the Church all over the world. In China ,England Australia wherever part of the world lent is being celebrated at the same time of the year . So Carnival has nothing to do with lent. The Church in her wisdom could have advised the authorities to set a carnival date that would not coincide with the Lenten season because of the solemnity of the season of Lent.

The Biblical term for “Pagan” is “Gentiles”, therefore when Jesus walked the earth, the people were described as Jews and Gentiles. “Gentiles”–Pajan– was for the Greeks and Jews–Israelites — was for the Hebrews

So when Jesus said: “Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold, them also I must bring together and there will be “One” Shepherd and “One” flock–John 10: 16 The other sheep which Jesus spoke about were the Gentiles (Pagan) of His days on earth

And to fulfill His mission, Jesus called Paul, who was an Israelites, to go and preach the message of Gospel to the Gentiles –Pagan. 2/3 of the New Testament of the Bible is the teachings and writings of Paul to the Gentile churches, from the Book of Romans to 1st and 2nd Timothy.

Today we are known as Christians–both Jews and Gentiles (Pagans)– who have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior–get that in your mind.

And I am not going to debate that with you okay; except the said ‘first to the Jews, and then to the Gentiles. We know that those of us who are not born Jews a Gentiles, pagan, and the practices of paganism is something totally different!

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even Pagans (I repeat the Term Pagans) do not tolerate—

      • Also, there is something that you could never know and understand with that state of mind which your possess. It is that even if all Israelites are Jews not all Jews are Israelites, and that is where the term Gentiles or Pagans derive.

Because Abraham was the Father of all the Nations beginning with Ishmael–his first with Sarah’s maid Hagai; he had more sons through another wife after Sarah died.

But not only that! Jacob and Eseau were twins of Rebecca and Isaac, but God chose the children of Jacob, whom He had renamed Israel–hence the children of Israel were His chosen people .

Once again I can prove it to you, from the messages of the Bible but I am chosing not to waste my time –you can never understand anyway–I have said enough already

It is so sad, while sinners are marching down to hell, you have religious leaders who themselves will not repent but to adding insults to injury blocking the WAY.When you buy a car or any equipment the dealer gives you a manual the manual is to instruct you how to operate and repair the car/equipment.So Why don;tthese religion take their teachings from the bible.? THE MANUAL.
There is a special place in hell for these people so-called leaders

      J. John-Charles:

      I agree with you.

The religious leaders who officiate at these religious exercises are promoting something that has no Biblical basis. Neither Christ nor His apostles instituted Lent nor any part of it. You are correct when you say these leaders are “blocking the WAY.” This is because they are leading the people to believe that the practice of Ash Wednesday and Lent will help them gain salvation and get to heaven. This is false and these who believe it are being blocked from the only WAY – which is faith in Jesus Christ apart from our own works.

The bible also say an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth. It also said if a man punch on the cheek turn the other cheek, it also said there are false prophets, it also said prostitutes and thieves will enter the kingdom before some that shout lord lord. It also say the Israelites were God’s chosen people. Why would he make us all in his image and likeness and then choose one over the other. The Israelites also ran away from him. Pastor Hill when I punch you 70 times in your face what will you do?

Some things are better left alone. Brother the ashes remind you that you are dust and to dust you shall return. Is there anyplace in the Bible that tells you to put a ring on your wife’s finger in order to marry her? Let alone which particular finger, and yet you have gone ahead and done it like everyone else. Why did you not challenge that idea that rub you of so much money. Why did you not use a cord bois patatt instead of gold or silver. Were you afraid of your wife?

        good point PIT.

People don’t understand how deeply engrained traditions can be in human beings. And also, I don’t understand what’s this bashing of the Catholic Church about? In Trinidad they celebrate Divali (festival of lights), Ramadan (fasting) which are Hindu and Muslim traditions respectively and nobody makes such a fuss about that.

Let the people who want the traditions have it. It’s no skin off my nose or yours.
