What is Pentecost?

Pentecost is a Christian holy day that celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit 40 days after Easter. Some Christian denominations consider it the birthday of the Christian church and celebrate it as such.

Originally, Pentecost was a Jewish holiday held 50 days after Passover. One of three major feasts during the Jewish year, it celebrated Thanksgiving for harvested crops. However, Pentecost for Christians means something far different.

Before Jesus was crucified, he told his disciples that the Holy Spirit would come after him:

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. John 14:16–18

And 40 days after Jesus was resurrected (10 days after he ascended into heaven), that promise was fulfilled when Peter and the early Church were in Jerusalem for Pentecost:

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1–4

Although many North American Christians hardly notice Pentecost today, traditional European churches consider it a major feast day. Pentecost, also called Whitsuntide in parts of Europe, is just behind Easter in overall importance. For example, in Germany today, on only three occasions does the observance of a national holiday span two days: Christmas (December 25 and 26), Easter (Sunday and Monday), and Pentecost (Sunday and Monday).

“Pentecost” is a Jewish holy day known as “Shavuot” or “feast of weeks”. It’s celebrated on the 50th day after passover.

Originally it marked the giving of the Law to Moses; then it marked the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to the apostles

The lack of understanding the significance of Pentecost, is the reason churches have changed into the practice of the “Golden Rules” better known as religiousity and churchianity; thereby defaming the concept of Christianity, which has to be the practice of an “intimate love relationship” with God Almighty, by faith in His Person of Love, Jesus Christ.

If God Almighty was not a God of Love, which contains the substance of mercy and compassion, all of human beings of this world would be doomed to the everlasting existence of night and darkness.

That is why we must embrace the teachings of the apostle Paul who tells us: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourself; it is a gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast”. Ephesians 2: 9

It is just that we need to consistently and sincerely exercise our faith, that we might build hope, the substance of our conscience–the home of God’s Holy Spirit, when He has indwelt in us– for by faith, hope teaches us how to press on to the fulness of Salvation–the gift of Salvation, the seed of Love–Life in us. That seed must germinate, grow, and to blossom into the glow of Spiritual Light–the new state of our soul in its awakening.

The Day of Pentecost is the fulfillment of the message God Almighty spoke through His prophet Jeremiah when He said: “I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel—I will put my law in their minds and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God and they shall be my people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying know the Lord, for they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord”. Jeremiah 31: 31-34

That new covenant, which means promise, would only be fulfilled by the work of God’s Holy Spirit in this world. God’s Holy Spirit through Jesus’s fulfilled mission in this world, which ended up with His crucifiction, His burial, and His resurrection; followed by His ascension in Heaven.

The Day of Pentecost was the reason why Jesus told His disciples, before He ascended into Heaven: “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but stay in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued (provided) with the power–meaning the authority and indweling of God’s Holy Spirit–from on high”. Luke 24: 49

The teachings in churches of today are plagued with counsels of mariage, sexual relationships, and all sorts of social ethics, along with the functions of man-made rules and regulations that is all about fleshly existence of this world and will also pass away with the flesh itself.

Popes, bishops, priests, pastors, preachers, and bible school teachers do not teach people anything about God’s Holy Spirit because they do not know Him themselves.

That is why Jesus tells us His Holy Spirit is the “Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him”. John 14: 17

The “world” in Jesus’s terms represents the mass of people–human beings–who continue to exist with a carnal mind, which cannot comprehend God and His ways of Love–which must be the actual ways of Life in us.

But pride, arrogance, selfishness, and haughtiness prevent those with that carnal mind from acknowledging that without God’s Holy Spirit, they simply are wandering around like a coffin carrying a dead soul; the reason they are speaking about “my Life this, that, and the other” but Life is in the Spirit. “The flesh profits nothing”!

You must be born again of water and the Spirit, says Jesus Christ. That which is born of flesh is flesh and that which is born of Spirit is spirit.

Again I say, that the things of flesh and blood is passing away. In other words, the end of the “world” means the end of the functions of humanity.

Life must function with through the renewed mind, which will process and produce the attitude and conducts of Spirit and Truth

The person who is born again, is a person who has enterered the journey of Life, indwelt, guided, trained, and disciplined by authority and control of God’s Holy Spirit; until he/she is completely transformed to have the Mind of Jesus Christ, God’s Person of Love, that he/she might fully know God and to practice His ways of Love in Spirit and in Truth–the function of Life.

The Day of Pentecost demands an everyday celebration. The greatest of sewo in that celebration is the pleasure or ecstasy that Joy and Peace give to us.

Joy and peace is the strength of Life–the state of Spiritual Light energy of our awakened or quickened soul. “In Him there was Life and the Life was the Light of men”. “And this is Eternal Life, that they may know You, the One True God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent”. John 1: 4; John 17: 3

I like most of what you write, expect what you say about what you you say about Ephesians 2:9. These are the Words of The Messiah, also called Jesus Christ, as revealed by Paul. Moses,John and all the others who wrote between the start of Genesis to the end of the Revelations are who GOD used to transmit THE WORD in to human lanuages. Paul is special but no greater than the rest. The rest are special too.Diffent from others but able to reveal GOD thoughts to us.Some say Paul changed what Jesus said, but no he just explained it in greater depth. It is all explained by John in his book. ” In the was THE WORD and the Word was with GOD and THE WORD was GOD.”

You speak of pride, yet claim to be better than all those “bishops, priests, pastors, preachers”. Whar makes you think your relationship with God is better than theirs?
Do you bear more fruit than them? Do you labor for Christ more than them?
      How about a little humility?

If I had known that this article would be so long I would have sent it in as a Commentary.

On this Sunday, Feast of Pentecost, the Spirit of the Lord is upon Me.
…And no where in this article it was mentioned about, that the Catholic Church which was established approximately 2000 years ago was the first to establish Pentecost. Therefore I deduced that the word mentioned, Christians do not specifically mention the Catholic Church.
If the writer of this article is a Catholic, as it is stated in Holy Scriptures, “Show yourself to be – a Catholic” and do not hide it. Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “Be not afraid. Fear no one.”
We are obligated to give compliment where it is due.
Lent, Good Friday, Easter and also Corpus Christi which the Catholic Church also refers to as The Feast of Corpus Christi will be celebrated on Sunday June 26th.
On Sunday, June 19, the Catholic Church will be celebrating The Blessed Trinity.
The month of June is dedicated to Our Lord, The Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Corpus Christi means The Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
Stating as well, The Holy Bible after it was written, the Catholic Church was the First One who had it.
Otherwise, as mentioned above, where did those who call themselves Christians who formed their religion after the Catholic Church get them from and from whom? Who gave it to them that today they are observing and practicing them?
The Passover originated from the Jews. This is approximately the same time as Lent, the latter which was established by the Catholic Church.
Those so-called Christian churches which were established long after the Catholic Church was established are taking all the compliments or want them all for themselves and placing them above and also at par with the Catholic Church, making It out to be unimportant and inferior to them. Claiming all the celebrations as their own.
They consider themselves, alone to be Christians just by reading Holy Scriptures and saying that they accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. We, Catholic members have done much more than that as baptized people.
The observances of faith, devotions and practice of same are many in the Catholic Church. If practiced as we should, this will enhance our Catholic knowledge and spiritual growth and enable us to grow in holiness to become living saints and enter Heaven immediately when we die.
As we attend Holy Mass on Sundays and sometimes on a daily basis, we hear the Scriptures read and the Priest preaches about it.
We also made our First Holy Communion and Confirmation and learned about our faith which is cultivated as we grow to adulthood. It is not only by Solo Scriptura – Scripture alone.
As it is stated The Holy Mass is not entertainment or meant for entertainment. We are to attend it reverently. We are there to worship God, pay homage to Him pensively and not deafen Him.
The Catholic Church is The First Christian Church, founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ. Its members are very well Christians, baptized In The Name of The Father and of The Son and of The Holy Spirit, a baptism blest by Our Almighty Father who, as God will never rescind this Baptism which He blest on high.
No one can cancel or annul this baptism. They do not have the authority to do so. God did not give them the authority/mandate or power to do so, whether Catholics renounce their beliefs to follow other religions. They are not aware that they will always be a Catholic.
Once a baptized Catholic Christian, always one to eternity.
God gave the Catholic Church the mandate to celebrate the Holy Mass, observing The Life, Passion, Crucifixion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
He also gave the Catholic Church the mandate to baptize and marry It members, noting that He established Only One Church on earth and approves of Its Dogmas, Sacraments and devotions, all, as inspired by The Holy Spirit.
We must think back to all this history, The History of the Catholic Church and when it was formed and by whom.
It is by no means man-made but established by Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself when He said, speaking with the vision and establishment of One True Church; also when “He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane that they might be one”.
Our Lord said: “Thou art Peter and upon this Rock I will build My Church.” Note he did not say “churches” and “different ones” under “different names.”
The different churches which were formed throughout the years to today have created lack of love, lack of peace and lack of unity. They have not contributed to The Love of Our Lord Jesus Christ and His expectations, to everyone with no exception.
They have formed their own opinion of how a Christian should worship.
They have also taken out some Chapters of the Holy Bible in the Old Testament as the Book of Maccabees.
They lambaste and criticize the Catholic Church in the worst way and this is a form of persecution.
As non-Catholic members, they have also devised their own views of what and how the Catholic Church should practice Its faith. This shows their lack of Catholic knowledge and inspiration.
In addition people are to respect the faith/ religion of others. It is a loving act to practice, first to God and then to others that pertaining to the “LOVE and Respect”.
As St. Paul said: “…They are disturbing the faith of others.”
How can anyone please God in this life, appease Him and hope to obtain eternal salvation otherwise? This is mortal and spiritual food for thought.
Some human beings who today call themselves Christians are not oblivious about that.
Read specifically the Chapters of John of Our Lord’s Teachings including, “Do this in memory of Me…” This is what the Catholic Church is observing and celebrating throughout the world until the end of time. It is called The Holy Sacrifice of The Mass remembering Our Blessed Lord and also His sufferings for us, thanking and praising Our Almighty Father for sending His Son to earth that we might obtain eternal salvation if we obey His Will.
It is stated that every second or minute, Holy Mass is celebrated in various countries throughout the world, in view of the time-lime of those countries. This is also what is keeping Our Almighty Father from destroying the world, in view of increased immorality also as recognition of homosexuals and lesbians and same sex marriage, abominations to the Lord.
It is also the mortal and spiritual business and obligation of Catholic Christians to know their Faith, practice It, Defend It and Pass It on. This is to be done without aggressiveness – forcefully.
St. Paul said: “Whatever you do, do it with love.” How many are doing that?
A Priest once said in His Homily, it is not the policy of the Catholic Church to force anyone to join the Catholic Church. They will do so voluntarily. God gave everyone a free mind and will. It is that same free mind and will which will make us willingly turn to Him and conform to His Most Holy Will. Likewise the Catholic Church.
Much more could be stated about that. Praise be To The Blessed Trinity – God The Father, God The Son and God The Holy Spirit.

      @Truth/Love/Peace

Please, please, please stop it! For you are only confussing and building doubt and discouragement in those people who are new, in their attempt, or those who have not yet learned how, to build a relationship with God by faith in His Person of Love, who is Jesus Christ.

You have failed to understand that Christianity is not about the name of a Church, which you have chosen to call “Catholic” or “Roman Catholic” as it is officially known.

Yes, the name “Roman Catholic” may be the name of the first group of people who were who gathered together as a Church. Yes also, that is what “church” means–a group of people who gather together to worship God and to fellowship with their fellow brothers/sisters of that church family.

Also, church does not always means that that group of people is guided by God’s Holy Spirit. For God has grieved over the gathering of those groups of people, who call themselves “church” to the point where He says:

“These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in “VAIN” they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men” Matthew 15: 8-9

The name “Roman Catholic Church” or any other name/denomination of a group of people in a particular church is not scriptural. I repeat, the name “Roman Catholic Church” is not in the Holy Bible, neither is any other of those denominational names.

It was way after a very large group of people–believing Jews and Gentiles–had come together to worship God, by faith in Jesus Christ, and to fellowship sincerely, that that large group of people were called a church–meaning disciples of Jesus Christ. “And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch” Acts 11: 26

That is the reason the writer of this article did not use the specific name of a Church, for we are all supposed to be recognized as Christians, believers, followers and most of disciples of Jesus Christ–regardless of the name of our denomination. Some groups of churches have no name.

In the early days, the people were either Jews or Gentiles. Jesus was a Jew, born of Mary–of the Seed of the descendant of Isaac, the Son of Abraham, who is the first Father of the children of Israel– who are the descendants of Jacob, who was the Son of Isaac.

In the New Testament, the apostle John, as he writes about Jesus Christ, one of the first things he wrote was:

“In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men” John the Baptist was sent to bear witness of the Light. “That was the True Light which gives light to every man coming into the world”. John 1: 4, 9

Please notice that John is saying Jesus Christ was the Light of men–meaning all human beings of this world, who chooses to live through Him by their faith.

Between the Israelites Jews and the rest of the people of Jesus’ days, the Israelites were considered God’s chosen people. Through His prophet Jeremiah, God said:

“I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah–I will put my law in their minds and write them on their hearts”. Jeremiah 31: 31-34

God’s plan of putting His Law in the minds of His people and writing it on their hearts was the primary mission that Jesus came to fulfill in this world. But the apostle John also wrote:

“He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own–the choosen people of God, the people of Isael–and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God”. John 1: 10-11

Now do you understand that a Christian is a person who is baptised by choice, or in adulthood, not as a baby–immersed in water–and is indwelt by God’s Holy Spirit; the evidence that that person is born again?

Therefore that is the reason for the Day of Pentecost; that is the reason for the remembraance and the celebration, which should be and indeed is, in my personal Life, an everyday celebration in the lives of Christians all over the world.

Christians are people–human beings–who are born again, and is in the process of becoming completely transformed from their state of humanity to spirituallity–by the renewing of their minds.

Through that process of mind renewal–being able to deny the attitude and conducts of the world–those persons will come to to know God Almighty, Eternal Spirit of Love–doing the attitude and conducts of Spirit and Truth. God’s Person of Love is the Man who will return to this world in flesh bones, just as He left at His ascension into Heaven. His name is Jesus Christ.

Christianity has nothing to do with the name of a church, as it is possible for a church group not to know anything about God Almighty because they did not accept His new covenant through Jesus Christ, which is the indwelling of His Holy Spirit.

“They all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord”. Jeremiah 31: 34

No one can know God Almighty of Love in Spirit, Holiness, and Truth, and to practice His Ways of Life–the attitude and conducts of Love–if they are not guided and taught by the Power of His Holy Spirit, who must indwell their conscience, mind, and heart–the complete formation of their soul.

A christian is a person who is bold to make the declaration: “It is no longer I that live, but Christ Jesus, who lives in me” Galatians 2: 20 Christ Jesus lives in me by the indwelling of His Holy Spirit. Amen!

      @ Muslim_always

Good question which deserves some explanation – not a one or two-liner. :) With due respect to you, did you not read my writing? It is self-explanatory.
The Holy Spirit did not place divisions, disunity and enmity. He never does. Our God is a God of love, peace and unity.
You said you have read Holy Scriptures. Recall the words of Our Lord Jesus Christ: “My peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you…”
What happened to this peace? Know that Satan was instrumental in dividing and causing this mess. Those who are disobedient, haughty and proud do not realize how much they were (are) influenced by Satan.
Human beings as you, when you renounced your Catholic Christian faith contributed to this division, lack of love, of peace and disunity.
God has given us a free mind and will. He will not touch it but He is patiently taking note of our actions for our judgment, even as we age.
Muslim, there are some fake prophets and churches, leaders which will convince Catholics to renounce their faith with their subtle talk.
Our Lord Jesus Christ spoke to us and warned us about the false prophets of our times, sheep in wolves clothing…So as to deceive the elect…”
If they really understood all what is contained in Holy Scriptures, obedience is one of them, they would not seek to have their own churches and to lure Catholics to join them.
God gave everyone a mind, heart, mouth and lips. He also gave them some degree of intelligence but some of them do not utilize it. They are so easily deceived and led by the noon-day devil and false prophets who are under the yoke of Satan. I will state, some unknowingly.
This is called the Great Apostasy. Our Lord said: “When He returns to earth will He find faith on earth?” – The true faith.
Some people profess to be led by the Holy Spirit. They could deceive themselves, caused by Satan himself.
Our Lord said: “By their fruits you will know them.” I will further state, by their words.
If you are spiritually-minded and enlightened, it will not take you long to know the good sheep from the bad sheep, the false prophets.
I will inform you something about myself. I was nurtured in such a godly Christian disciplined manner that I am not deceived.
I love attending Holy Mass. There were times as a child I would go to Church even when there was no Holy Mass or devotions. I would pray in Church, pray the Holy Rosary and Make the Stations of The Cross. In those days, unlike today, all Catholic Churches were opened until 6:00 pm, if there were no devotions and we were free to go to Church during the day. The Roseau Cathedral is opened daily.
I could detect false prophets a mile or so away.
I am not deceived so as to follow every kind of wind and people who will “tickle my ears” and make me renounce my Catholic Christian faith. I have experienced when some people are aware that I am a Catholic, there goes their criticism. It is as if the devil gets hold of them and takes over their heart and mind. …And they call themselves Christians?
I am no weak Catholic Christian and by no means a foolish person. Furthermore, I will not follow anyone who is less educated and intelligent than I am just as those who are not law-abiding. Why should I? How will this benefit me mortally (morally) spiritually and educationally and enhance my Christian knowledge and make me happy?
Sadly, those who appear not to know any better do not realize that they have made a grave mistake of renouncing their Catholic Faith as they criticize It and make all sorts of derogatory statements about It. God is hearing and taking note.
Generally, people are not perfect. I like to say, some more or less than others. Everyone is liable to temptation. No one is an exception. All have fallen short of God’s glory.
When temptations of whatever nature befall us we just have to be strong to overcome them. We can only do so with the help of God in prayer. If we do not call on God, no matter whom, we will surely fall.
We must not act as if we are righteous and speak ill of and lambaste those who do knowing we do not know what will befall us in time, even our family members.
As God looks on, those people who laugh, criticize and lambaste those who fall into sin, whatever their status, a punishment awaits them be it in this life or in the next. They should know that they are not acting as Christians and are attacking others for their human weakness. Everyone has some human weakness.
We are to pray for them that they will repent, change, that God will save them and that we might not fall and save our souls too. This is one of our Christian duties.
Our Lord Jesus Christ left us a Church. This Church is The One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. It is not a denomination. It does not belong to a denomination. It stands alone in that It is, the First Church, as established by Our Lord Jesus Christ. Some disobedient members of humanity chose to divide and cause disunity.
Read the life of King Henry VIII and Luther and others that followed them and formed their churches to this day.
Oh yes! Some of them have numerous excuses why they renounced they formed their own church; likewise those who renounced Catholicism. We are to “Think God”. Will God accept their excuses?
Holy Scriptures has taught us: “Do not depend on our own understanding.” This is what some, as yourself have done when they renounced their Catholic Faith.
It never ceases to amaze me, it saddens and bothers me too that those people who form their own church and call themselves Christians are not enlightened to know that if people die with this type of division on their soul which they created, they will not enter the Kingdom of God.
Do not get me wrong. I am not stating that they will not be saved for God has a Plan how He will save certain souls. I call this Plan – Purgatory for those who are not yet pure enough to enter Heaven but not bad enough for Hell which they do not believe.
Some of those who call themselves Christians are the ones who judge and condemn people to Hell. One would think that they should know better and that they are not God. They are not aware of what transpires between the soul and God at the time of death.
There are those who plot to murder people, carry-out their premeditated thoughts and others murder thousands of people until they die. They committed atrocities and caused various suffering, grief and harship on their fellow human beings. Only those I feel there is no hope for. Nevertheless, God is the Judge.
In Heaven, there are no divisions. Only love, peace and unity. Therefore consider the numerous religions with different names and churches of the world who claim to love and know God, preach His Word -Gospel and claim that they are led by the Holy Spirit.
Muslim, little do you know how many of those leaders may be in Heaven or destined for Heaven and Hell, the latter for deceiving others to join their church. God, who knows and reads hearts, is aware of their motives.
If per chance I need Catholic advice, I will certainly not go to the enemies of the Catholic Church. Some Catholics have done just that. This has caused them to be led astray and to join other churches. They also join certain religions for certain, personal reasons, also depending on what has transpired in their life. I know this too well.
Muslim, you have much to learn and about God and the Catholic Faith. I do not expect you to know everything but pray to God for His grace and enlightenment. If you do so with a loving, humble and contrite heart, it will be granted and revealed to you. Do not forget to perform good works willingly and cheerfully.
I reiterate, that you must believe that God sent His Only Son to earth that whoever believes in Him might be saved, if we obey His (Our) Heavenly Father’s Will.
Some years ago the Lord opened my mind to spiritual matters.
Some people have tried to indoctrinate me into renouncing my faith but I stood steadfast in my faith. I expect there will be others. Today I am a great defender of my faith specifically when the circumstances call for it. I am happy for it as I practice my faith.
As a Catholic I never doubted my faith and never questioned God. As I practiced my faith I began attending Catholic prayerful gatherings. I have Catholic Radio and TV and of course I got some more Catholic information. These have enhanced my faith, knowledge and practice of same.
Those who claim to be led by the Holy Spirit should act according to His teachings, practice His virtues, two of which are love, patience and respect for their religious beliefs and practices.
Finally, this is the truth of the matter.
Some day, with the help of God, I will write my book(s). :)
May God bless and enlighten you.

      @Muslim Always

This time you have a good observation. And you have every right to point out that question.

If you read my two enteries carefully, you will discover that God is not happy with most of us who call ourselves Christians.

Our problem is that we have failed to view the Word of God as His message of discipline and training to become like His Person of Love–Jesus Christ.

Instead we are making the mistake of hailing that we are children of God and proudly exalting ourselves as we claim God loves us. But God’s Love and His wrath are two different kinds as He executes His emotions

I have noticed, among the majority of us, we are simply doing the works of church and religion. But church, without the influence of God’s Holy Spirit, is the same as a regular social club, doing the functions of religion which is simply the functions or the attitude and conducts of self-righteousness.

However, God’s Holiness does not condone to the attitude and conducts of self-righteousness.

Hey Muslim_Always, are you faithful to your own religion? If so, you agree to wage jihad against the infidels, enslave them under Shariah law, lie (taqiyya) for the sake of jihad, and strike terror into their hearts in order to conquer the world for your God. If not, then you are also divided in your own religion.

In Christianity, there is only one Bible and only one way to be a Christian. Just like many muslims try to live out a “good” version of their religion by ignoring many of its teachings, some Christians choose to ignore (or are currently ignorant of) some of the teachings of Christ and His apostles.
