Beach volleyballers leave for tournament

Four of Dominica’s best and brightest in the sport of volleyball have today Wednesday 22nd of April, left the island to represent the country at the 2015 Beach Volleyball Continental Cup tournament in Antigua. This is also an Olympic qualifying tournament as the top four will advance to a 2nd round of qualifiers for Rio 2016.

Team 1 includes Lincoln Riviere and Kerwin George while team 2 is represented by Deon Vidal and Yahn Florent. All four are members of the current national indoor team. Riviere and Florent gave an excellent account of themselves at the 2014 OECS indoor championships also held in Antigua in December last year. Florent was also a member of the junior olympic beach volleyball team who narrowly missed a chance to be at the Nanjing Junior Olympics last year. The teams are being coached by head of the beach volleyball committee Mr. Ray Robinson. Robinson has been working with the players since January of this year and regards his team as very fit, ready and focused on the task at hand.

International coach, Brazilian Joao Carlos Campos, who tours the Caribbean to assist national indoor and beach teams, has been on island since the start of the month assisting our teams in their final preparations. He echoes the sentiments of Coach Robinson and has given high praises to Riviere and Florent. He commends them as the most promising players in the entire OECS at present. The boys are poised to do great things at this tournament being held from April 22nd to April 27th in Antigua.

The DAVA wishes to recognize the efforts of the Dominica Olympic Committee in making this dream a possibility for the players and Dominica volleyball. Stay tuned to the DAVA facebook page and your favorite media house for updates on their progress all weekend long.

Beach volleyball is not even a sport. Not unless it’s played on a hard court indoors or some kind of court outside. It’s just something to show off people’s assets. And imagine, it’s even an Olympic sport!
    Good luck to the guys.
