St John’s, Antigua – Windsor Park in the Caribbean nature isle of Dominica will debut as the world’s newest Test venue in July 2011 when it hosts the Third Digicel Test between West Indies and India.

For the packed 2011 season of cricket in the Caribbean, West Indies will host Pakistan and reigning world Test champions India for a total of two Twenty20s, ten One Day Internationals and five Tests.

West Indies and Pakistan will clash from April 21st to May 24th in a T20, five ODIs and two Tests.

The Caribbean team will then go up against India in a T20, five ODIs and three Tests from June 4th to July 10th.

The Pakistan leg of Digicel Series will commence in St Lucia and conclude in St Kitts while stopping in Barbados and Guyana.

India and West Indies will meet in a T20 and two ODIs at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad, then move to the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds in Antigua (two ODIs), Sabina Park in Jamaica (one ODI and the First Digicel Test), then on to Barbados for the Second Digicel Test at Kensington Oval before the historic encounter at Windsor Park.

Dominica first hosted international cricket in 2009 when West Indies played Bangladesh in two ODIs at Windsor Park.

The Digicel Series 2011 will visit eight Caribbean countries to allow for fans across the region to soak up all the cricketing action live.

Pakistan will also play two practice matches (one in St Lucia, the other in Guyana) during their tour of the Caribbean.

go on people lets put the politics side for once yes it’s a great idea to host a test match in th elovely island of dominica, i just think that the wicb should have just left us as a one day and T20 venue for the time being see how it develops from there. Understand life all tooth paste is not colgate and all bleach is not colrox, dont be fooled.

    November 28, 2010

Test cricket and one day cricket are just not the same. Why should west indiies board take away our one day cricket and put five days test cricket in Dominica instead. People it is just not the same. Pakistan has no travelling fans and people hardly travel from the region to see test cricket. I can tell you the average crowd in Dominica will be no more than 3,000 a day if at all, it reached that much. West Inides board please give us two one days instead and put the test in Jamaica or Trinidad..

India, not Pakistan, are the ones who will be playing in Dominica during the West Indies vs India 2011 home series. This series will occur after the West Indies vs Pakistan 2011 home series.

    Dear Lord,

My family pray for fine weather, mass support and a win for the West Indies Team in that Test Match. Lord, please grant our boys uncommon wisdom as they prepare for the game and while they are playing. Grant them humility, dedication and the grace to play selflessly in trying to satisfy the crowd which will have made the sacrifice to attend that match. We pray that you grant us the spectators patience, love and charity in our speeches as we witness that historic event. Thankyou in advance Lord for answered prayer as you continue to bless our Nature Island.

No need for all that drama. Come on!!

You know what comments like yours remind of? When you’re teenager and you with your parents, and your parents says or does something in front of your friends that embarrasses you. You bow and shake your head, mumble something under your breath, and wish the ground would just swallow you right now.

That’s the same feeling I get as a fellow Dominican reading some of these comments. I love my people but… EMBARRASSING!!

A friend of mine once said in jest, “Boy I think the Caribs curse us for taking their land.” Every time I read comments out here I’m starting to think that may not be so far fetched.

Here it is the Windsor Park is receiving the HIGHEST international designation as a cricket ground, and what do we(Dominicans) do? We bicker. Unbelievable!!

Rather than celebrate, we turn this into a Labour/UWP political debate. Some moron makes a statement that we(Dominicans) should be ashamed to be the last to get test cricket. What the hell is wrong with us?

My fellows Dominicans, both at home and abroad, please brush that chip off your shoulders. Get rid of that stupid inferiority complex that is plaguing our psyche. Liberate ourselves from that tribal political yoke gripping our nation. Stop pitying ourselves, behave like we belong. Truly embrace our nation and be proud of her.

  12. Sheffield
    November 27, 2010

Why some of you like to act like UWP supporters not Dominicans too? As if is DLP supporters alone that can take pleasure from such things…ease up bondieu…

it’s very disheartening how you guys go on as if UWP supporters are a different breed of Dominicans.

It’s a real turn off how every thing is so political. Give it up already.

And btw giving skerrit all this credit for such things is such backward thinking….grow up. Let Skerrit alone attend the games and see what happens…

    • Sheffield
      November 27, 2010

cause i am willing to bet that it’s not only DLP supporters who attended the games earlier this year giving the WICB this fantastic impression of Dominica and how great it is to conduct games here.

Thank you Mr. PM for the stadium and Dominicans who made it happen for showing up at the ODI’s and last but not least the organizers who made it happen. Congrats to you all. Let continue to support our WI cricket and made DA one of the top venues in every way. I will be in the to give my full support.

I feel so proud to be Dominican and I cannot understand why some people go to such lenghts to continuously criticize DA. I will definetly be coming down from the UK for this historic occasion and I hope Dominicans Shane Shillingford and Billy Doctrove will be part of this game in their respective roles as player and Umpire. Looking at Billy presently performing in the Ashes in Australia he is definetly proving he is currently one of the top umpires in the world.
It is an occasion that ALL Dominicans should be proud of and keep that stupid politics out of the picture . Let us all turn out at the Windsor Park in large numbers and prove to the WICB and the ICC that Dominica deserves many more matches when teams are touring the West Indies

It’s nice to see Dominicans unified in their love for cricket. It is also nicer to see the apreciation expressed for the fact that we can host test matches. Imagine…who would have thought?

I guess Skerritt has some ideas that may just need time to be fruitful…. perhaps Dominicans will remember that Rome wasn’t built in 1 day, and so too should we not expect Dominica to be the same… it’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here…

Next train… a new hotel, hospital, better roads (grateful to have driven on the new roads for my vacation), night landing (don’t know about you guys but i was stressed from having to go through Antigua and their maximum security airport….

Personally – congrats to Dominica…although we are crawling, wei\ll walk one day

Test cricket in Dominica for the first time in our history, should definitely make Skerro look and feel good because he is the one that built Widsor Park. On the flip side, he and our local politicians should use this accomplishment as a motivation and reminder that it is not the person that draws the plan that gets the credit but the one who builds it. Widsor park was not Skeritt’s baby it was Edison’s but Skerritt ran with it and no doubt deserves the praise. Similarly, he should have built the International Airport because he met land that was already reserved for that; but for the sake of stupid politics, they ignored it and dumped millions of hard earned money on Night Landing that will definitely not help us in any wayz. Just as I give him the credit for Windsor Park, so too his flowers would even be greater despite the fact that he remains one of the most currupt leaders that ever put their foot on this earth.

Kudos to the government and people of Dominica. We could not have gotten thus far, if the gov’t did not have the foresight to build the stadium and the cricket loving fans had not shown their commitment by filling up the stands in the previous International matches. The economic benefits to be reaped from such an event will be tremendous. India is known to have a good following, so we can expect to see the Indians from T& T, North America and as far as India coming out in large #s to support their team. Let’s all be ready to support the WI team and welcome the visitors to our shores. This is our time to SHINE.

It will be just fantastic to get a chance to see in real life Indian cricket stars like Tendulkar (hope he doesn’t retire before that test series), Dhoni, Zaheer, VVS Laxman, Harbhajan Singh and the others.

Dominicans let’s once again turn out in huge numbers on each of the five days of the test match to support the West Indies team and also to show the Caribbean and the rest of the world what we have down here.

    November 26, 2010

Great Recognition and i’m happy to hear that… But the term “world” may very well be misrepresented, or exergerated in this case. Cricket is still NOT a “world” renouned/popular sport and is otherwise limited to a handfull of countries. But if you are stock in your own “world” then that makes for a legitimate statement.

    • warma
      November 26, 2010

Is that so? You’re too smart for your own good. You think Dominicans, or for that matter, cricket fans the world over, are not aware that only a few countries in the world play that sport? That’s its essentially limited to former colonies of the now-defunct British Empire? Do you know of a sport that each and every country in the world participates in and for which there’s a global tournament?

Do you make such statements on American newspaper sites and/or blogs when they refer to their baseball championships as the “World Series” when it is solely an American thing? Yes, teams in Japan, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Korea and one team in Canada play the game too; but with the exception of the one Canadian team who has the opportunity to play in it, no other country can play in the American “World Series”. Why don’t you go try telling them about that fraud. Go ahead, tell them there’s another 200 countries in the world and their thing is all local, nothing “worldly” about it.

Keep your sanctimonious statements to yourself – matter of fact, get lost. We don’t need your “genius” to yourself. We, the other people, are happy for this and take pleasure in the fact that Dominica is being recognized; this can only bode well for the country.

I am not against your reply. I just want to tell you that baseball people and their fans know that their “World Series” has nothing to do with the world. The name “World”, in the title of the season final competitions of baseball, is the name of a long-time news paper, which focussed on promoting the game.

Aye Big-Bannan, Your statement about cricket not being a world sport is incorrect. As the facts would show, cricket is played all over the world. If you check the reputable cricket news site (cricinfo.com), you will be suprised to see the number of countries involved in playing cricket.

Because of how the ICC organizes world cricket competitions, we mainly here about the top ten test cricket playing nations ie Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Zimbabwe and the main associate ODI nations ie Afghanstan, Canada, Ireland, Kenya, Netherlands, Scotland, USA. The ICC has a World cricket division ranking system right down to Division 8 featuring tournaments for countries of lower ranking than those mentioned above such as Germany, Argentina, Denmark, Israel, Kuwait etc. Afghanistan is the latest country to rise through the World cricket division ranking system and qualify for ODI status and they even took part in the Twenty20 World Cup in the Caribbean earlier this year.

So cricket is indeed a world sport and is one of the few sports that features sovereign nations (not just clubs) in serious competition against each other on a very regular basis.

Was Mr Skerrit the one who originally thought about developing the Windsor Park into an international cricket stadium?

Didn’t the UWP in the year 2000 start the development and construction phase to transform the Windsor Park into an international cricket facility?

      • Patat
        November 26, 2010

To be very honest with you the answer to your question is NO. Patrick John, PJ was the one.

Between 1975 to 1977, Premier Patrick Roland John and Mayor of Roseau George Karam started that initiative to transform Windsor Park. Can you remember that all play had to come to an end by 6 O’clock with Mr. Booze-eye as the security guard and there were some bad German shepherd dogs roaming the Park?

If you are my age then you should know that there was a cricket match between West Indies and Australia in Dominica with our “little Master” Irvin Shillingford representing for DA on the West Indies Team.

Are you familiar with the famous calypso of Vigo? I will give you a hint: Shillingford driving! Ask Ted to get that song and play on the radio for you.

There was also a white man called Dave or David Cottingham along with the present Cabinet Secretary, and Edison James, the same one who was fresh from England at the time and even had an English accent (lol) and later became PM ,with Thomas Baptist, and a few other prominent sons of the soil that backed Patrick John in transforming the Windsor Park.

The advice from these gentlemen at the time was that Windsor Park was too small to make into an International Cricket stadium and so Premier Patrick John sought assistance from the French and started the Canefield Stadium that was left for dead by Miss Charles.

Mr. Edison James tried reviving the initiative of Hon Patrick John by negotiating a commercial loan to construct a stadium at Windsor Park. Why Windsor Park? To have tried and secure the Roseau Central seat for Senator Norris Prevost at the time. Senator Prevost was sooo full of himself that he addressed the then Roseau Central Parliamentary Representative, Charles Savarin as ” Outgoing Parliamentary Representative for Roseau Central”!!! Talk about cockiness.

All Charles Savarin said was this a few weeks later: “Prevost can but, Prevost can sell, but Prevost can never win Roseau!!!” And Charlo words came to past for five years. These days Prevost winning Roseau Central and even boycotting parliament but went back to parliament with his tail between his legs knowing full well that he would ah get a licking if he had to go up again soon after winning by a mere three votes.

In 2007 Vince Henderson formally opened a Stadium that has not cost the tax payers of this Country and that includes you and me nothing!!! It is a gift from the Peoples Republic of China with no strings attached – no missiles, no Chinese naval base, and no Chinese soldiers on the Island of Dominica!!!!

Thanks again for this information. I left Dominica in April of 1974, and my people there seemed to have nothing to tell me about Dominica, except what was taking place in our house. Not even that completely, because my sisters step son was murdered last year around this time, and I had to find out about it on DNO, and from someone whom I do not even know.

So now I say thanks to God for the Internet, DNO, and commentators like you. Its is too bad that I will not be there to join you all at the Windsor Park next July. But my time will come.

Yes… I. Let’s go DA. Let’s go. New things and great things in store for us I believe. Just hope we can handle the Indian following that comes with those teams. Hotels, guesthouse, airports, and the likes… we need to be ready. Just hope things work out for Shane Shillingford so that he will be onboard on the WI team.

Looking forward to great and wonderful things. Let’s go DA… Let’s go!!!!
