BUSINESS BYTE: Darren Sammy inspires Dominica’s young cricketers

digicel cricketAhead of the inaugural Home Series T20 match-up between the West Indies and New Zealand in Dominica, Digicel Brand Ambassador and West Indies T20 captain, Darren Sammy, put aspiring young cricketers through their paces as part of the Digicel Cricket Experience programme.

This training session was held at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium and saw the young players receive one-on-one training sessions with Darren Sammy as well as other members of the West Indies team, including Krishmar Santokie, Lendl Simmonds, Sheldon Cottrell and Sunil Narine.

The young cricketers were excited to meet their cricket heroes and gained valuable first-hand knowledge from Darren, who encouraged them to continue working on all aspects of their game. He said; “Whatever you do, you’ve got to enjoy it to be the best that you can be. Hard work and discipline are important, but you also need to have fun at the same time. If you continue on the same path, I have no doubt you will be representing your country and the region at the highest level.”

Digicel Dominica CEO, Richard Stanton, said; “This is the first time that an international T20 cricket match has been played in Dominica and we are happy to be a part of that. And, as part of our commitment to supporting the development of cricket in the region, Digicel is delighted to give these aspiring young cricketers a chance to interact with their West Indies cricket heroes and learn valuable tips from them to improve their game through the Digicel Cricket Experience programme.”
The training session involved taking the young players through a number of exercises, including warm-ups, batting, bowling and fielding drills, all the while receiving helpful tips and tricks from the West Indies cricketers.

I like that initiative and appluad it,but what i am concern about is the continuity of such programmes and others that really affect our present state of cricket in dominica .DO you know that we have placed last in the just concluded windswards u19 cricket tournament . Last again! Are things going to continue as it .What is really happening with the status of our cricket? We have to make the coaches and managers accountable. What are the future plans to better our dismal showings.I honestly think that some of the coaches objective are to stifle our young crickets. Some indicating that some are too young to play even if they do have the potential or not .Is like your turn to play basis.”YOu too old next year ,so you can make the team and on the other hand ,you too young you have plenty more chances.”.Some coaches have to put their personal interest and preferences aside and select players that do have what it takes to represent Dominica, and not cripple the young talented and aspiring cricketers. These coaches know themselves and their bad deeds will come back and haunt them, but in the meantime our cricket standings continue to fall .
