UPDATE: Dominica’s gold tally rises at the 2014 Carifta Games

Shanee Angol took gold and in the process, smashed her own 2013 Carifta Games record, in the Under 18 Girls Javelin event today, on day three of the 2014 Carifta Games in Martinique.

This comes just one day after Chelsey Linton came first in the girls Heptathlon with a score of 4648 points. She beat Janel Fullerton of Jamiaca (4588 points) and Miquel Roach of Bahamas (4365points) to give Dominica its first gold in the Games.
This morning’s session also saw Dominica, represented by Jaleel Lloyd, participating for the first time, in the under 18 4 x 400m relay.

Other credible performances for Dominica so far are: Judah Corriette clocking 1min 59:26sec to set a new youth record for Dominica on his way to the finals of the Under 18 800m and Camron Carbon finishing in the first 7 in the Under 18 3000m.

Dominica’s coach at the Games, Goodwin Dorsette, stated in a release that poor weather conditions affected medal hopeful Gihon Defoe in the long jump, an event he says that saw many athletes leaving the site injured.

“Results of this and many other events are not yet ready as the poor organization of the meet continue to take hold of all involved and that is why I can safely say that poor organization and incompetence brought tears from some athletes and coaches as Team Dominica took the stage on day one and two of the 2014 Carifta Games,” Dorsette lamented at the time.

He added that The Games “are covered with unpreparedness as teams struggled to find information and accreditation for their participation at the meet. Dominica’s situation was compounded when 4 athletes and their coaches found out that they would not be participating in their individual events, due to the failure of the team manager/coach to ensure that all his athletes were in their appropriate event at the technical meeting.”

The players who are unable to compete are: Kerael Matthew in the 100m U20 Boys, Jazan Laurent in the 3000m U18 Boys, Anelia Austrie in the 400m U18 Girls and Tianna Jno Lewis in the 100m and U18 Girls Long Jump.

“It is hurtful and we must never allow our young athletes to go through this depressing and demotivating situation; this is too much,” the obviously dissatisfied coach exclaimed.

Dorsette had words of congratulation:

  • Chelsey Linton Heptathlon Gold and Carifta record holder. This was the first time that the Heptathlon has ever been held at the carifta Games making chelsey’s winning performance a record
  • Shanee Angol Gold and second carifta record, Shanee is also the holder of the CUT Games record in the Javelin under 15 girls
  • Walson Pacquette Coach of Shanee Angol.

Dorsette also commended Emmanuel Loblack for his work with the athletes at this year’s Carifta Games.

Jaleel Lloyd and Judah Corriette  will be Dominica’s final chance to add more medals to the team’s tally so far.

Congratulations to Shanee Angol and Chelsey Linton for capturing gold at the 2014 CARIFTA Games. Congratulations are also in order for coach Walson and the other athletes who represented Dominica at the games.

I’m sorry that the team manager/coach and athletes’ coaches missed out on their events’ technical meetings resulting in the athletes disqualification. How could they not have known?

Congratulations to all the athletes who won medals at the games and to those who didn’t, take this as an opportunity to keep getting better. We are a talented nation, we just have to keep plugging away. Having said that, the president of the DAAA who was probably responsible for the team in Martinique has shown his incompetence time and time again; from athletes sleeping in airports to athletes not having tickets after showing up at the airport. He should do the youth and Dominica as a whole a favor by resigning from that position.

It is a shame that he is still in there as president. I will also blame the membership for voting him in as president again because of a promised trip. It is time that we start thinking about the athletes and stop thinking about self. Remember the associations are there for the athletes, with out athletes, there will be no associations. That goes for the DOC as well.

    My two pence.

You didn’t read the story? Only the comments then? You will realize this story was done on day three. One may have more people from their village commenting than the other, but the story, if you read it, is balanced about Dominica’s athletes. Doe dig, read!

Congratulations Chelsea!!!! @ Charles”Scholarship that you so badly deserve”. I really do hope that Chelsea get out to continue to develop her talent, but it is sometimes really sad when people give advise to the people who surround these young men and women and they do not take the advise but run to others from other countries for advise.

Chelsea should have been out of Dominica a long time ago. People must understand that athletic performance is a stepping stone to being given an athletic scholarship, but you have to meet certain minimum academic requirements.

Perfect example again of Dominicans believing that other Dominicans’ advise is not good enough. Keep on Striving Chelsea and hopefully you will find a school soon.

      One Love Dominicans!!!

Dominica’s situation was compounded when 4 athletes and their coaches found out that they would not be participating in their individual events, due to the failure of the team manager/coach to ensure that all his athletes were in their appropriate event at the technical meeting.” So, who is to blame for this ? Why did the coach not know or be prepared to have the athletes in the appropriate events ? This to me is not acceptable in particular at this level.

Every athletics meet is the same lamenting story. When will sporting authorities, groups and stakeholders get their act together? The event to select athletes in Portsmouth was totally disorganized. What should we expect when you guys travel?
