The Trinidad and Tobago Women Cricket Association (TTWCA) has apologized to the Dominica Cricket Association (DCA) for what it described as “embarrassment caused” following an incident involving its players at a local hotel.

In a letter to the secretary of the Dominica Cricket Association (DCA), David Johnson, the TTWCA said it is working on the matter, so that such occurrences don’t take place again.

“We, the TTWCA, assure you that we are treating expeditiously with our team regarding the matter, to avoid any re-occurrence of such reaction,” secretary of the organization, Monica Sobers Hylton, said in the letter.

Recently the Trinidad women’s team was in Dominica to compete in the WICB Regional Women’s Super50 Tournament, however a member of the team said things went terribly wrong when someone broke into the room of two players, stealing jewelry, cash and other items.

According to the team member, the matter was not handled properly both by the police and local cricket officials and the team was left traumatized by the experience and had even thought whether coming to Dominica was a good idea.

But the TTWCA said it was embarrassed by the team’s input into the publicity of “the unfortunate incident which took place in the early hours of the morning of of August 7, 2014, at the Anchorage Hotel where they were accommodated.”

The organization said it would like to emphasis its commitment to decorum in treating such matters.

“Our Association emphasizes our commitment to the display of appropriate decorum, attitude and responses at all times and this will be strongly communicated to them for guidance at future events where they may be representing our Association and, by extension, our country,” the letter of apology reads. “Once again, accept our apology.”

The TnT women cricket team had to apologies for going public with the incident. It’s coming practice those of us who has the privilege to travel and lives in hotels knows that you put your valuables in a safe lock box provided by the hotel, I do not know if this particular hotel have safe lock boxes, but is coming hotel practices, telling you that they are not responsible for your personnel items. Most times these items is been stolen by staff of the hotel.

I should have said common practice, my apologies.

I honestly dont see the reason why they should apology as they were the ones being vitimized in this case. The Police and the Dominica Cricket Association was wrong as to how they handled the situation.

I don’t understand why people keep leaving their valuables in their hotel rooms at all. The hotels are supposed to have safes for that. On board the cruise ship where I work there is a position called the Purser. Cruise passengers submit their valuables to him and he issues them a receipt.

So any time stuff go missing, you know who is responsible.

If the hotels don’t have a safe and such a position, it would be a good idea to get on board with that now. Because these international incidents (remember JahCure?) are only hurting our country.

In other words, should they experience similar incidents, they must say nothing to the effect that they wonder if it was a good idea to come to Dominica to participate in this sport at all.
I do not see why they should apologize. On the contrary, D/cans have reason to feel embarrassed. The Dominica cricket team organizers owe them an apology for the action of this thief.
Thieves are heartless. Shame on you thief! One day you will bear the consequences of your action and soon enough.
Their reaction was normal. I do not think D/cans, resident and those worldwide who read this article raised objections. In fact, D/cans were appalled and disappointed that someone, a thief, knowing there were visitors at Anchorage Hotel and who they were would have the gall to break and enter (if the windows were closed) their room. The thief knew very well what he/she was up to. This thief is the one who embarrassed D/cans.
I am surprised that this occurred in the Anchorage Hotel. This hotel is considered a reputable hotel. How did this thief manage to enter the room and steal their personal effects? Some quiet thief, slithe as a snake.
Did the hotel have camera and security surveillance?
Did the police conduct a proper investigation and took finger and foot prints on the window and inside the hotel room?
They lost their money and other personal effects. The police should make a public report and alert D/cans of this theft.
They were within their rights to make the statements that the police came to them with a wrong report. That was shoddy police work. So who should be apologizing? By no means the women’s cricket team. Place the blame where it belongs.
Should a Trinidad cricket team ever consider visiting D/ca in the future, they will avoid this hotel for obvious reasons. Due to their experience, do not blame them. This pertains to other teams. Business lost.

I would like to applaud the Trinees for this apology. However, this should have been followed by apologies from the Dominica Police force, the Anchorage hotel and the Dominica Cricket Association. This apology from the trinees shows Dominican Leaders how they should behave. On behalf of all Dominican I would like to apolgize to these ladies and to let them know that this is not the norm in Dominica. I have never heard of a break in at the Anchorage so the police need to get off their laurels and find the culprits and make sure they are jailed.

It is right for them to apologize…they made Dominica look like the worst country in terms of crime…whereas Trinidad’s crime rate may well be the highest in the region. Compared to Trinidad…Dominica is more innocent than a pope…its a saint! so I felt real insulted when the Trinidad women’s team said those things about my country…knowing that their country is much worst…ofcourse, I condemn the crime that was committed against their members here but I felt the dealt with the matter in poor taste

This may very well be. The point is, the theft occurred in D/ca and while they were sleeping. They thought, D/ca being a small country, this would never occur. They had not given it a thought. I hope the hotel owner compensated them.

It is not a matter of who, or which country is worst where crime is an issue, It is about handling such matters with common sense and dignity. Both governments believed that they handled the affair accordingly, and that’s all that matters. Who has more crime than the other is not the issuehere. And if we want to talk about numbers, then when Dominica reaches the population of TnT, we will be in a position to talk about that. At this moment, common sense dictates how international relations run. Not who has more crime than who.

Sorry DNO this post seems v ery wrong. The victims are being persecuted by this publication!!!!
A public apology should be comming from the management and staff of Anchorage hotel and the Dominica tourism authority should be holding an enquiry into the lack of security provided for these VIP’s /Diplomats of Trinidad and Tobago.

That’s just bull. If this is what happened why send some apology from association head that may not represent the members feelings at all?!

DNO did not publish all the information or perhaps that all the information it had. I do not for one moment believe that the TTWCA would issue an apology on this matter if their players did not act in a crudely outrageous manner.

A good decision, and good acceptance from both governments. Hotels and other organizations can learn a great deal from this, and most of all, preventing theft and other disappointing, or injurious acts. It takes both sides to make things easy for all its guests. No need for ugliness here or there even though, they are in our midst.
