DABA roof for Windwards tournament to cost over 300K

The Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA) is to host the 2011 Windward Island Basketball Tournament, and has solicited a design to cover the Lindo Park Hardcourt.

The new design will also look to address concerns of rain, which almost affected the smooth running of this year’s LIME National Basketball League.

“The association hopes to discuss this idea at an executive meeting and also attempt to meet with the other sports and the Olympic Committee to discuss this initiative,” said DABA official Mickey Joseph.

Cost estimates for the DABA Goodwill basketball court roof stands at $374,833.10.

    I would suggest to DABA.

If you gonna spend all this money, please spend on a proper indoor facility. Cover to prevent rain is a waste of time and money. Yes you may need more money but a quick fix is not the solution.

Do nothing and wait for the international facility for another 20yrs, while all the other islands have similar structures to play and improve as they go along, what has happen to creep before u walk its better than having nothing. Yah Dominica we are our own worst enemies, so do nothing.

  6. and meanwhile........

and meanwhile there is a facility designed for these activities in stockfarm that is rusting away which no one seems to want to talk about

I just left home and this design is in keeping with a persistent lack of vision and foresight in Dominica. I hope the DABA do not spend money on this piece of crap design. Seats, on one side, no barriers on the other three sides, no rest rooms, etc, etc. Seek more funding and construct a facility that meets international standards. Stop with the foolishness already!!! Who will take the lead in Dominica with regards to such undertakings? No one, that’s who.

@LETS RETHINK THIS THING!!!!: Lack of vision is joke. Not only should the roof be steel frame, but why are they building stands on one side of the court? Where is the proper sitting area for the teams? Why not do a good basketball stadium that meet international standers? I sick I tired of small thinking, no vision politicans and engineers in this country. Everything they constructing is 30 years behind when compared to where the rest of the world is. It’s time we start building for the future and not for the past.

Why is it that every thing seems to be centered, in and around Roseau. Is there not enough congestion in the city? If, according to another posting, there is a facility in Massacre, why not focus on getting that site ‘game ready’ instead.
Let’s hope that this is not yet ‘cast’ in stone.

First i would like to make an observation in respect to the present news release or article. A previous release mentioned the specifics of the design and the material that would be used to do the roofing and if my memory serves me right it mentioned lumber(wood) was going to be used. For some strange reason referring once again to the article it makes no such mention. DNO please can you fully brief your reading public when releasing a news item and dont allow other forces to influence the way you inform the public or if such was not the case be sure to publish the right thing the first time.
Now, I would like to strongly commend the DBA for taking a step towards bettering basketball facilities on island, the idea and initiative is a plus. Many dominicans have travelled and seen simplier and better dooms. The design shown here of the roofing structure that is being contemplated to have installed shows a LACK OF VISION. I am hoping that what is shown is NOT a replica of the real design; if its a caribbean tournament the stands are insufficient, the roof leaves much to be desired. Strikingly, is the fact that dominica is a tropical island and it rains a lot and we are oftened face with strong winds. As, such we should be looking at having a steel roof put in place rather than a wooden one.

I would recommend putting chicken wire at the ends of the court, north and south, that way it will be ventilated but the ball when shooting to the basket would not go of to the field or on the road so someone has to run after it for the game to continue. i hope they take my advice.

Massacre refused to let DABA games be held there this year, why would they invest money into that facility. Raise your own funds!

A state of the art facility is needed to house basketball, netball & volleyball. An indoor track would also be nice. However, that dream is years away!

This current design does need to be tweaked, but it is a step in the right direction.

    Good Luck!

Ad hoc, reactionary initiative. Is that the best architectural design the DABA could muster. This thing looks like a banana shed. With its open sides this will not stop the rain. The Basketball Association must have a strategic plan. A FUND MUST BE STARTED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A STATE OF THE ART FACILITY .This will help motivate our youth and improve the stae of the sport on the island. On another note, was the planned expansion of Dupigny Lane considered in the design plan.Pease do not despoil the ambience of our beloved Lindo Park and Goodwill by extension.

MICKY KNOW MASSACRE IS THE BEST PLACE FOR THIS STRUCTURE BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE STANDS AND SPACE FOR MORE AND THE PLACE IS FENCED WITH BLUCKS AND EASY TO COVER.
