Dominica Cricket Association fires Delvin Esprit

Delvin Esprit

Former national cricketer, Delvin Esprit, who was handpicked by the Dominica Cricket Association (DCA) for the position of Technical Development Officer (TDO) has been fired from the post.

Esprit , a national cricket selector, was also fired from that post.

“He was incompetent and we could not agree and so we decided to terminate his services and part ways…..as it relates to he being a selector it’s done on a rotation basis and so his term has come to an end,” President of the Dominica Cricket Association, Emmanuel Nanthan, told DNO.

Esprit was appointed despite calls from cricketing circles that he was “not the best suited and qualified person for the job”.

Nanthan defended the DCA’s decision at the time, explaining that in an effort to improve cricket in Dominica and the Eastern Caribbean, DIGICEL and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) had come up with a number of programmes which feature the islands’ young cricketers.

“We have come up with a number of initiatives and have two people working in the schools to have children play and enjoy more cricket……we have also employed a Technical Development Officer (TDO) in the different territories,” Nanthan stated.

He added that because the Windward’s and Leeward’s were now separate entities, the WICB had decided to have assistant TDO’s in the various islands and disclosed that in Dominica, former Dominica cricketer Delvin Esprit was “handpicked for that position working in collaboration with the Dominica Cricket Association.”

However the relationship between Esprit and the DCA  appears to have deteriorated into one of mutual dissatisfaction. In response to the reasons given by the DCA for his dismissal, he has hit back, labeling Emmanuel Nanthan-the lead executive as “incompetent and incapable.”

“The association is incapable and incompetent of running cricket in Dominica, in fact I can tell you that there are two factions, one led by the president and the other by the vice president and they each do things separately from each other to the detriment of the association. They all need to resign we need a complete overhaul in that cricket association,” Esprit told DNO.

According to Esprit, all they (DCA Executive) are concerned about is “international matches and to remain in office.”

“They have no interest in the development and well-being of players and the cricket in general. They are there for their own personal interest….who gets to coach and manage etc.”

Esprit is urging cricketers to come out in December to the DCA’s AGM and “vote this incompetent executive out of office.”

All we do is fight>Fight for power!fight for money! All i see is non lovers of sports running sports. Can you name one sporting discipline that shows signs of Development?IF you are now thinking, that means there is none.It is really sad that we as dominicans have so much talent ,but there is always some big monster lurking in the dark, pretenting to be conern about sports development, but all they concern about is their personal development by using that poor unspoilt sportman or woman.Case and point LUan Gabriel, that child was used and abused for someonbe personal gains. These white coloured criminals should be help accountable! Blatantly using people like this and we as dominicxans sit back and run our mouth for nine days and we do nothing about it>so the sports criminals go about their business as normal, waiting in the darkness for the next prey.WHO is next? So when they fighting, they relly have to fight, because the stakes are getting bigger and bigger.Brasil next4 years. In the meantime our sports is dying a slow death.Look at the state of our sports and tell me as dominicans if we should not take charge of our own?

That is the problem with Dominica- the absence of civility. Even if delvin is unhappy with his directors he can’t jbeso audacious to tell his bosses that they need to go.
Nevertheless I thought they were all bloods brothers wearing red together.

Is that the same Esprit who single-handedly organised and run the national under 19 cricket league and coordinated the grassroots cricket? That is some sort of incompetence and incapability!!

Let us be fair/just. Do not be so quick to lambaste him. You need to know what genuinely transpired during his tenure of this new position. Too many people speculate and degrade him about this position. No one is perfect and not in their words of criticism.
OK, so he was offered the position. This is a promotion. Does the Dominica Cricket Association have a written Job Description on file for his position? They should have one which would have given him a fair knowledge of the job requirements. Word of mouth for job requirements and expectations are not enough.
Was he trained and/or orientated with what was required of him to capably fulfill his position?
You do not merely put someone in a new position and expect that they will know everything, even though they are employed in that enterprise.
If he does not know all what is required of him, he should respectfully ask and deserves a respectful response and relevant instructions. In addition, he should obey his superior avoid confrontation. A meeting should be held to clarify his position and the job requirement. Too often these are not clear to the subordinate.
Superiors in turn must be respectful to their subordinates. If they do not, they should take a management and training course. Too often some superiors are devoid of this and do not know how to respectfully and amicably speak to their subordinates. They should exercise their authority with respect. Otherwise, they could annoy them and get them impatient and angry. Life is a two-way street. Subordinates/employees are people too. They deserve due consideration and respect.
There are some superiors who are not as well-conversant with their position. Some of them are also not more intelligent than those whom they supervise and could be incapable of supervising anyone.
There should always be a probationary period. During that time, the performance could be assessed. If the employee does not measure up as expected, speak to him/her and offer concrete advice, even further training on how to become a more efficient employee. Some people may need more time than others. Supervisors should exercise patience. We all do not learn and grasp the job requirement at the same pace. As long as the employee is trying and there is a prospect for improvement, help them alone. They will soon catch on.
Prior to ‘firing’ them a performance appraisal should be prepared. They should be informed what led up to this situation and the finality of firing them.
Sadly, the work force can be a dog-eat-dog world with employees vying for recognition, higher positions and salary increases. It should not be a tug-of-war where employer/management cannot get along with their subordinates and vice versa. Too often this occurs which will eventually result in some employees being unjustly fired.
Be fair and be compassionate. The Golden Rule, “Treat others ask you expect them to treat you” for what goes around comes around in time and two-fold.
These are my opinions. No exception pertaining to overall job, personal experience and training.
The world would be a better, happier and peaceful place if everyone treated others respectfully, according them their due rights and dignity. In so doing, as individuals, we would be happier people.

I tell people I rather be poor materially but I want to go home when my Good Lord calls me with some very key titles, “honest” happens to be on the top of that list.

I think when someone has lost this title, they are classified in my book as the lowest of low. The bible states it very clearly “what will it profit a man to gain the whole world and loose his own soul?” The answer is “NOTHING.”

So with all the wealth that Nanthan and them seem to be accumulating, it really adds up to nothing instead in my view they are really really poor.

Honesty and uprightness and still good qualities!

Mr. Nanthan, we the members of the court of public opinion have read and reviewed the case between DFA and Mr. Esprit, and we have voted in favour of Mr. Esprti. Due to the damage and destruction that you have done to all aspiring, and ambitious young cricketers, like Theophille from La Pwte, and Mervin Mathew from Soufriere, the public court has found you and compatriots guilty, guilty, guilty. Therefore, we are asking you to resign from your position fortwith, and allow leaders who love cricket, and who want to see young cricketers become successful in the game to succeed you ASAP!

The neg maron culture is so engraved in our everyday life. We seek to destroy anything whether good or bad. I am not privy to the inside politics of the cricket association. What i know for sure os that no one is perfect and personalities do clash sometimes. I do respect what mano has done for cricket in Dominica. If we would focus judt a little morr on encouraging rather than destroying we would be a much better country. It is tough to do anything in Dominica. Our people cannot at this juncture resolve issues in mature and civilized ways. We are to quick on the trigger of negativity,to quick to cast aspersions and insult.
I congratulate mano for his commitment to the game- the man loves the game and that is much more important than having people who are just there for other reasons than the love of the game. I am also absolutely sure that Esprit love the game just the same however no matter what a face to face talk is goes way further than the back stabbing, gossiping and behind the scene plundering.
The game is bigger than our egos.

So anybody who follows Dominica cricket will now that everybody inside there looking for themselves. When big cricket coming the going all out. Except when it comes to paying ppl. But that is a separate issue. League opening, league closing.people sponsoring the leagues. U hardly heating any promotion of the sponsors on the radio. You go to a final match and u dont even know digicel sponsoring premiere league.what them ppl giving allu money for. So local cricket dead and buried. They don’t give a rats tail. They will still be president of board and manager of team and coach of team. Those who not getting that will get their just dues in other areas. What dem fellas there doing now is to get people like delvin to shut up. So delvin was talking bad about them before, they give him a job. He shut up. He even start defending them. But they never could tolerate him. Same thing with joe t. When they buy you, that is it. When they ready they feed you to the pigs. They know delvin shouldn’t have been given that job. Anyway, meme bet meme pwelle.
And then they making jobs for ppl too. They hv a woman indbpffice that think he cricket is her own. She want to talk to ppl how she want. Them cricketers and plenty ppl cannot tolerate her. Can u say starlights.
And then they have some ppl like a big belly man that married to a lady of chaperoning that think the cricket and selecting a national team his own. Power does really corrupt some ppl. As he in position he want to do what he want with ppl.
All rope have an end. It just too ablate to bring back Dominica cricket to where it was.

DNO, I’d like to find out:
How long was Mr. Espirit’s stint as the Technical Development Officer?
Was some performance appraisal conducted by his employers?
What is the basis of his alledged incompetence?
Why did the DCA not advertise the job in the first place and select an individual based on merit?

What are the DCA’s plans for replacing Mr. Espirit?

Is there a documented plan for cricket development in Dominica?

If yes, how are we progressing? Are we on track?

I would be happy for some responses.

    August 17, 2012

I agree that Mr. Devin Esprit is not competent enough for the post that he held and he should not have been nominated for that position.
I also strongly agree with Delvin Esprit that the entire Emanuel nanthan (Mano) led administration should be dealt with and let people that love the game, devoted to the sport, and want to see us produce good cricketers again, lead the association. Mano I know loves the game but he is too caught up between money, politics, and business to really bring back the love of cricket to Dominica.
At a time when test cricket is being played in Dominica, you will find very few grounds ready for cricket, let alone cricket games. Mano and his association have failed to develop grass root cricket in the elementry schools, let alone high schools. So yes, I agree with Mano 1000% that Delvin Esprit is not competent but I also agree with Jahbone 3000% that Emmanuel Nanthan and his association are all incompetent and should go packing. Let people like TK run our sport.
