Dominica placed second in regional football competition

The team from Dominica

Dominica placed second in the 2017 Windward Island Senior Men Football Tournament which was held in Grenada.

Needing a win in their final match of the competition to capture their first Windward Island championship, the boys from the Nature Isle played to a 2-all draw against St Vincent and the Grenadines on Thursday at the Kirani James Stadium.

Julian Wade opened the scoring for Dominica in the first half from the penalty spot, for his third goal from four matches.

St Vincent answered with two quick goals, for a 2-1 advantage at the interval.

Briel Thomas got the equalizer for Dominica, with a beautiful header from a corner kick in the second half.

Dominica ended the competition on six points, one point less than the eventful winners, host country Grenada, who lost their final match against Barbados 0-2.

The board of management of the Dominica Football Association, along with the entire football family would like to congratulate our boys and coaching staff for being the only unbeaten team in the tournament, and for a good showing this time around.

Glenson Prince of Dominica got the Golden Glove award for best goalkeeper, with the Golden Boots award going to Myron Samuel of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Nick Williams of Grenada was voted MVP of the tournament.

Well done to all involve. Going unbeaten in that tournament should given us top place.
I’m proud of the fighting spirit and the motto the team used during the tournament.

Well done to the coach bcos the coach selects the team.
Euclid, hearts out to you and keanu.
Nothing personal, pots is my age and keanu is from my village.
I don’t live at home but I do take a keen interest in what is happening at home.

Overall, could grata to all the guys, let’s continue the express our appreciation to the individuals and team.
The guys needs to know we are behind them. Let’s not wait when they don’t do well to criticise but let’s encourage the boys on a good performance.
More friendlies and in five years time we will be a force to be reckoned. Remember I said that.

Good but not good enough.I want Dominica to become like the New England Patriots and be a dynasty,a yard stick to measure success in regional sports.I’m sure most Dominicas have heard of Liverpool and Manchester United of British soccer, that is what I want from our sports. I’m sick and tired of the mediocrity, being satisfied with second place or worse. We need to attract the necessary resources in the form of persons who have succeeded in these sporting events at the highest levels to interact with and train our youth. Also these athletes must be exposed to competetion so they can horn their skills and evaluate how much better they need to be and not be complacent. We can and must do better in sports

Just asking: which is it, regional or Windward competition? Headlines say Regional, then lower down reference is made of Barbados. Never knew Bimshire was part of the Winward Islands.
    HOTEP!

Congrats! Saw 2 games on facebook live and really thought we should have scored on the open goal opportunity in the 72nd minute against SVG last night. But I really like the style of play. The guys looked organised and tactical for the most part.
A few “international friendly” would really help build the team. Keep it up

Great work team. The DFA needs to remember that national players need to train year round. Provide proper incentives for the players and ensure that they put in the work. The days of gathering the team one or two weeks prior to a tournament/friendly match should be long gone! They need to train regularly. I must commend the DFA and the players, over the last year they have made some good furtherance.

The team is heading in the right Direction… Congrats to the DFA……Management….Coach ….and most importantly the players…..A little discipline and a change in attitude can go a long way…My hope is that, from this tournament some of the players may have done sufficient to be spotted by some scouts somewhere…and thus obatin a professional contract…For our football to go forward, we need more of our players playing professionally..
