Dominica ready for 3rd test Australia vs West Indies

A young "Grass Roots" cricketer poses with WI players

The Australia and West Indies teams on Saturday had their first look  at Windsor PArk stadium in preparation for the 3rd test between the two cricketing countries due to begin here on Monday.

The teams arrived in Dominica on Friday.

Although the Australians have retained the Sir Frank Worrel trophy which was at stake in the series, the West Indies still have an open chance of leveling the series.

For Dominica, it’s only the second ever test match to be staged on the island following the historic India versus West Indies test last year which ended in a tame draw.

Event Manager, Gifford Walsh, told DNO, that “all systems are set and ready” for the third and final test.

Curator, Richard Letang says the pitch will offer “bounce, pace and spin and have something also for the batters”.

He says baring the weather, a result is expected.

There are reports of hotels in the city and private dwelling houses already being fully booked.

Marvlyn James is the Sales and Marketing Manager at the Fort Young hotel and she says the 71 room hotel is “fully booked” with all the necessary security in place.
“Staff is adequately trained and last year we hosted the Indian team and as expected we maintained the high “professional reputation of the Fort Young Hotel.. and this time will be no different,” James said.

“We will be having lots of people on the island who will be utilizing the different services, like the tours, taxi operations and the various facilities on the island which will mean revenue for the economy,” she said.

Adding that Sports tourism is “a niche market which needs to be explored further” and wished that Dominica would get such matches “at least once a year.”

“Australian selectors Rod Marsh is the only member of the Australian touring party to have ever played on Dominica, as a member of the World Series Cricket Australian side beaten by the West Indies by eight wickets in a one-dayer in April 1979, but he had almost forgotten his visit here until the bus journey began.

“It did come back, particularly the drive from the airport,” said Marsh.

“I remember last time vividly. Clive Lloyd was on our bus for what reason I don’t know because we were opponents, but we did in World Series Cricket days mix a lot more than they do now. He described the road as a ‘boy scout’ road, one good turn deserves another,” :-D

    Love that quote.

Sports tourism especially associated with cricket is definitely an area that the government should channel some serious time and resources into with
the goal of developing it further for the country’s benefit.

Much better economic and social developmental opportunities will be seen from such ventures as compared to pursuing nonsense diabolic gambling operations such as the one that opened at Krazy Kokonut recently.
