First Women’s and Girl’s Sports Festival successful

The Sports Division in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports successfully held its first Women’s & Girls’ Sports Festival at the Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth on Sunday, March 27, 2011.

This sports festival was organized to further celebrate International Women’s Day and to further emphasize the importance of physical activities in the health and wellness of our Dominican women.

Eight teams (approximately 90 women) participated in a fun-filled fully-packed day of sports; they were: Rising Stars (Tete Morne) New Kids on the Block (Portsmouth), Lime Toucarie, Aces (Roseau & Wesley High School); Bloaters Breakers (Portsmouth), Carib Strikers (Castle Bruce), Reformers Capuchin,  and Northern Tremors (Portsmouth).  There was competition in Rounders, Netball, Volleyball and Football.

Results from the Finals of the various sports:

Netball:    Final:    New Kids on the Block – Aces     10 – 1

The Sports Division would like to thank all those who contributed towards the success of this event and encourages even greater participation in next year’s festival.

This Women’s & Girls’ Sports Festival will be an annual event.

    Congratulations to all those who took part. Without the teams the event would not be successful and hats off to sports division for organizing. Keep up the great work

    Firstly, congratulations to my teammates BLOATERS BREAKERS on winning the volleyball competition, and to Caren for being judged mvp. You go ladies!!!! :lol: Congratulations also to the winners of the different categories.

    Secondly, I am happy that events like these are taking place right here in the second town of Portsmouth. The participation was great, and the turnout of teams, suporters and sports enthsuast was awesome. I do hope that there will be more events similar to this here in Possie.
