FLASHBACK: Basketball glory days

In 1993 Dominica won the Winward Island Basketball Tournament.

The tournament was held in Dominica and was sponsored by Dutch Lady Milk, agents J.Astaphan & company . It took Dominica 16 years to regain the championship after the 1976 team led by Wilmouth Leblanc ( Plastic). Although, keeping in mind that after winning the championship in 1976 , the next tournament was in 1991.

The Dominica Team  consisted of:

Standing – Marcellus Lee (Coach), Allister Grell, William “Jimbo” Graham, Jason “Bungi” Richards, Ashworth Daniel, Derek ” DD” Alexander, Donny Robinson, Jeffrey ” Big Baba” Joseph, Ibrahim Brohim (Manager)
Stooping – Madrat, Davidson “Ginni” Toulon, Fletcher Leblanc, Swingburn Anselm, Sherwin Williams.

Below are some pictures of the glory days of the 1993 team.

That’s where Clouds started? I remember dem training everyday and building that team with little or no hep at all.

Those were D days when Clouds run and rule D space/place with man like 00,23,33,5,6, and who can forget D big man #9 on the low post,D MVP of that ear-taking it to and putting it on them. Man I tell you Dem man was real authentic and they took the game to another level ( from pay as you go to $5. and Blocko after with Wardics and A&M) so much so DABA ban Dem Lol. Dem man use to take D balling thing real serious, so much so people use to say “they have varie and think is NBA they playing” but D girl Dem use to show up in large numbers when Dem man playing eh. I use to go to the park especially when Clouds playing to see if I can get a thing eh. To me as a yut Dem Clouds man was superstars eh!

Nice DNO. Now when you are done with Nationals I hope to see individual teams.

PROS where are you all. Swinburn Anselm played for PROS I think- went to prmary school with he and Donnie Robinson. Am I old? – yikes :) age is catching up.

These PROS men and women you all were disciplined for the daily 5 am bouncing balls and running I would hear past my house in the mornings :)

Are we getting anywhere with basketball like this anymore? When last?

Ashworth I will always remember.. That boy could play ball as he used his towering height advantage. Very pleasant person and well brought up too. Oh the good old days and how I long they would somehow magically return in all their glory.

Can we, will we ever see, natural( healthy looking, able, just 4 relax players again ever like Charles” Just 4 Relax” again representing DA? Never. They don’t make them like that no more
saw some games of the 90’s much improved but not like the ealier era.Charlo still has that Howard like body 30 plus yrs later while those 1/2 his aged are aged out
    Chew on that.

Positive memory of the good old days how time travel fast. An Old school team of the nineties in action would be eun to watch. One thing the OECS tournament was held in 1994 and not 1996 as stated.

I remember those days when basketball was so popular in Dominica that it attracted a lot of spectators. Those regional games in Dominica attracted massive crowds at the Windsor Park. At the time, Reds Ferreira was head of the OECS Sports Desk. He did a lot for sports in the region.

Alas, those glory days have not been repeated. The Windsor Park as we knew it then is no more. No more more keen rivalry between Kensbro and Harlem. No more commitment among sportsmen. We have lost so much since the end of the 1990s and gained so very little.
