Hula Hoop Championship to be staged for the first time

The stage is now set for the first ever Amateur Hula Hoop Championship.

Dubbed the ‘Christmas Hoopla’, the event is carded for Monday, December 20 at the Massacre/Canefield Primary School grounds. The opening ceremony is scheduled to start at 10 am.

At stake will be the establishing of a data base of hula hoop records in Dominica, which is hoped will be challenged annually, organisers say in a press statement.

“The hula hoop, which was seen as a popular kid’s toy, is now scientifically proven as a most effective exercise equipment, which is being used and popularized by First Lady Michelle Obama, and our own Dominica star, Nelly Stharre,” the statement reads.

The Dominica Cancer Society Inc. and the Dominica Scout Association are collaborating to host the event and the Dominica Public Library will be hosting a promotion day on Friday, December 3, which starts at 3 pm.

Mouth-of-th-South: While in DA culture, this was seen as a girls’ thing, it is a sport that can develop upper body strength. In addition to wula-hooping around the waist, the arms, and even the neck are other parts of the body that can be involved.

So, I would not totally discourage boys. What about skipping. Girls thing you say? Check boxers!!
