National Basketball Team returns from Windward Islands Tournament

The Dominica team with officials of the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA)

The Dominica National Basketball Team arrived in Dominica today, after its flight was canceled yesterday, causing them to spend another day in Grenada.

All the countries making up the Windward Islands participated in the tournament held in Grenada. The results of the tournament were:

Dominica 2 wins and 1 loss
Grenada 2 wins and 1 loss
St Vincent 2 wins and 1 loss
St Lucia 3 losses.

That resulted in a three-way tie between Dominica, St Vincent and Grenada. At the end of the tournament the referees were pressured to declare the champions. Since Dominica beat Grenada, Grenada beat St. Vincent and St. Vincent beat Dominica the referees had to go to a goal average rule to decide the winners. Grenada had to beat St. Vincent  by a 6 clear points to win, while Dominica due to its margin of loss to St. Vincent made it difficult to do better than second place, but Grenada was only able to beat St. Vincent by three points; consequently, St. Vincent were named the champions based on their better goal average.

Members of the other teams from the Windward Islands. Garth Joseph and Dave Baron of the DABA embrace each other on the far left.

Final Tally:

St Vincent – Champion
Grenada – 2nd place
Dominica – 3rd place
St Lucia – 4th place

Derison Anthony was named MVP for Dominica.

Garth Joseph got most rebounds in the tournament.

The overall MVP of the Tournament went to Alexis Foyle of St Vincent (professional player based in Taiwan and cousin to Adonal Foyle of NBA fame)

Dominica has been asked to explore hosting the next tournament, since our association maybe better organize and the popularity of the game in Dominica.

Top scorers for Dominica were Derison Anthony with 51 pts, Garth Joseph with 42 pts, Andel George with 31 and Joseph Hypolite with 29pts.

Top Rebounders for Dominica were Garth Joseph with 34, Derision Anthony 15, Joseph Hypolite 14 and Andel George 13.

A Dominican player holds the trophy proudly.

Good job guys for going out there and doing your thing. This was a really sill way to have earned 3rd place considering you only lost 1 game.

That sad, the coaches and selectors need to consider choosing and playing guys who are able to go the distance and do what is necessary to guarantee the W’s. Dominica has always produced some of the best basketballers in the region and has won a number of the Windward Islands and Caribbean tournaments in the past. What is different this time around?

All th respect in the world to guys like Garth for going out there and playing their part to support the guys. However, I do believe that the man has done his time and that the younger lesser known players should be able to showcase their talents to push the game of basketball forward in Dominica. This is about winning and sustaining and not about the names and egos of a few people.

Let us showcase the strengths and talents of our young stars!

is congrats really in order? Coming out third in a tournament of four participating countries warrants congrats? .I do not think so . We need to address the basketball situation in Dominica before it really goes underwater.Too many personal egos and not really loving the game of basketball. We have not moved an inch in basketball development, especially the youth. What have we done differently? Nothing!Just a different spotlight,a showcase for some very egoistic indidviduals, trying to out do each other for fame and self gratification..Congrats to them, again !What have we achieved?

Yow I ain’t got much to say, but one thing for sure is we went out there and represented D/ca Strong, I personally think the team went out there and did well, their are many other players in d/ca who are very talented, but what made this team so powerful is it Chemistry. Everybody was support each other when we got on the court…. It was great

All you talking about giving the young guys a chance, but they have to come out and train. Of it’s the old guys that coming and train I say to pick the old guys to represent. The young guys thing that because they have the talent they don’t need to train. That is so wrong.

I do agree that the youth have to show more interest. I am a big cricket fan and do go to cricket practise. The young players are there practising with thier heart out and at the end of the day is the elder players that make thier time that find favour with the coach. Is the same Ray, Chicky and Kirstin CAsimir that is playing.

watch the world cup, the German team is a young team and Spain has a 20 year old player.

For too long now our coaches and selectors use that strategy and its not working.

Much Respect to you Toto. I remember Toto playing ball at the old Windsor Park for Reefs, Rebels, Lions, and Knicks. It was the same group of guys who just changed the team’s name and sponsor as the seasons progressed. They were like a band of brothers. Great Talents!! Nuff Respect to Chiney, Toto, Augustus, Paytayboos, Long Cock, and Long Boy. Those guys were the core of that group from the days as young Reefs under the late Tosh to the championship Phia Knicks days. The government must invest in a state of the art basketball facility where the young talents can develop their game. Over the years I’ve observed too many athletic talents from Dominica “go to waste”. When are we going to begin aggressively investing in our talented young men and women?

The problem with most of the younger players is they don’t want to work. 45 were called to practice. 17 people showed up. 3 days before the team is supposed to leave 5 young men show up wanting a shot. THey haven’t practiced. They don’t know the plays. Also, the other teams all had professionals on their team. St. Vincent had 5 of them!

It’s not just basketball the same is true of volleyball & netball. No one wants to commit but everyone wants a shopping trip.

@ Shawo. But if he getting the minutes, is not he u expect to get the numbers. What you know about sport. I never said he is not capable, but there comes a time to make space for the young talent.

Let him make his contribution in some iother form.

hold on a minute, is that Garth Joseph. Isn’t Garth suppose to be retired? Is he playing in our local league? What all these elders doing on our team? Don’t we have young players who need to be exposed? Is like asking Irving Shillignford to come back to play cricket.

Why do we keep placing all those old folks on our teams. We still peak Ray and chicky on our cricket team.

Coaches is time we wake up and expose the young talents that we have. Stop hiding the talent. You remember what happen to the guy in the who hide his talent? It was take from him.

That is why the netball team came last in St Kitts. Too much old players who get tired in 2 mins while we have young talents leaving Grammer School and PSS and DGS every year.

the young John player from Paix Bouche, top scored in the local league, and was he given a sweat?

Garth I respect your contribution to the sport, but take it from me brother, you would do much better as a coach and mentor.
