Members of national football team at memorial service

Members of the Dominica National team gathered at the St. Alphonsus church in Goodwill on Sunday April 21, for a memorial mass for national coach, Kirt Hector and player Norran Jno Hope who died in tragic accident on Friday.

Parish priest, Fr. Eustace Thomas, who delivered the homily, called on the team to “pray and be united” inspite of the grief suffered.

“Man proposes but God disposes..they were determined to bring home the cup to Dominica but God had other plans,” Fr Thomas said.

He told them that “there was hope” and that the men “died in the national interest”.

He pointed to what he described as “tongue lashing” in the media and  said that like the St Peter and Paul, God calls everyone by their names. “Watch what you say…God will call each of us by name and we have to be ready and prepared,” he said.

Fr. Thomas encouraged the footballers not to allow the death of the two men “to destroy them” and urged them to pray and continue on their journey.

President of the Dominica Football Association (DFA), Glen Etienne, PRO Gerald George, Secretary Ericson Degallaire Treasurer, Phillip White and other board members attended the service, along with sports Minister Justina Charles.

I find it unbelievable that most of the comments relate to Mr George using his phone.
I know for a fact that Mr George and other DFA officials were constantly in touch with doctors and family of Mr Prince at the hospital. also, they were in touch with family members of those who perished in the tragedy. The DFA were also at the time investigation the possibility of moving Mr Prince to another health facility abroad. So yes it may look out of place using his phone in church but we do not know the circumstance of the usage. And that is CERTAINLY NOT the important issue here. The tragedy, the 2 important lives lost and Joslyn’s safe recovery is what is important here.

Respect in the Church. When in church the cellular/blackberry should be turned off. Many people go to church and they have cellulars, etc. Many have sick relatives in the hospital or at home. They know that they cannot take calls during the Celebration of the Mass. It is a NO! NO! to keep their phone on, to view it, to check for calls, to receive calls and to send calls out while in church. If people cannot comprehend that, then they lack God’s enlightenment.
When in church they turn them off. Prior to commencement of the Mass/Service, the priest informs the congregation to turn off their phones.
The Service probably lasted for only an hour or one and a half hour, be it two hours. When in church and listening and praying intently without distraction and keeping our minds on outside/ worldly matters, it is amazing how the time flies.
This parish priest will have to consider this in future and inform the congregation about it.
Let us face it God is not amused when people do not respect His Church and while in Church.
Ecclesiastes 4:17 – Guard yourself when you go to the house of God. Let your approach be obedience, rather than the fools’ offering of sacrifice for they know not how to keep from doing evil.”
The Lord spoke through the prophets. This also pertains to while people are in church. You who make excuses and who love to say, it is in the Bible and this and that is not in the Bible, it is in the Bible how to conduct oneself while in church. No one should have to advise them about it. You should not be arguing about it nor make excuses for others.

Most importantly, for God and His Consecrated House. After giving him his dues, everything and everyone else will fall in place.
I take this matter seriously and cannot help but state that comments on the Internet project the intelligence of some and non-intelligence of others, some who do not think before commenting or is it that this is the type of mentality they possess. It is amazing, the ignorance of some people who cannot comprehend that when in Church we are to conduct ourselves reverently and with piety and that under no circumstances will God exonerate us from godly practices toward him of all. Their action appears to be a mockery of God and of His Church.
As much as some state they know what is contained in the Bible and it is in the Bible, they appear to take God for granted and underestimate him, his power, his expectation of us and punishment. It appears that they assume every action could simply be pushed aside and excused and that it is OK to check phones/tablets while in Church and standing in the front pew. Not so with our God. He is not a God of excuses who will exonerate us from acting indifferently specifically while in Church. The Church is not the place for such ungodly attitude. Those who are godly enlightened should be fully aware of this. It is said that the enemy of God and of our soul will seek to distract us when in Church and when praying that our prayers will not be meritorious, will not benefit us and those for whom we pray. This is the job of the detractor and destroyer of souls who will prevent us from receiving God’s blessing and graces in life and from obtaining eternal salvation.

When official are representing their organisations, they have to show a certain level of deportment and decorum in the public. This shows a lack of respect for his organisation, the church and not to mention very unprofessional.

I am sure it is not God that was texting or bbing him. He does not look to me to be too concerned about the reason or cause he was attending the church service. Was that message so important it could not wait for after the church service? If so, he just step outside and when he is finished come back in.

As the saying goes “A picture is worth a thousand words”. This is a lesson for all public officials.

These days everything goes and instead for us to hold our public officials accountable for their actions, we blame everyone or everything else.

Does that situation depict a microcosm of our society in Dominica? Just asking a question.

This is a Catholic Church. It is not to be compared with a different church. We are not only reading, looking at the Bible or searching for passages on a cellular/blackberry. These things have their place outside of the Church, in a Bible study class and after leaving the Church.
The difference with, let us say your church is, you listen to the pastor read and explain the Bible. You sing and pray. The Catholic Church does more than that.
The Catholic Holy Mass/Service is not a Bible study class. Much more takes place at that time. The Church Mass/Service is different to other churches. When in Rome, we do as the Romans do. We listen intently when the Epistle and the Gospel are being read, the Word of the Lord.
First, the Priest greets the congregation and then we pray. Then he commences the Holy Mass/Service. The Service is slightly different to a Holy Mass.
We sit and listen when the Epistle is read. We stand when the Gospel is read. We sit and listen to the priest’s homily/sermon. We listen to other prayers and we pray along. We sing relevant hymns. At that time they were standing and listening to probably the Gospel or prayers.
He should have been listening intently, taking in the Word of God, as the others and not checking for whatever on this tablet, as I refer to it.
If he is a Catholic, he should know better. Even though he is not, he should still know better for he is in a church. I would not go to another church for whatever reason and be respectful in their church. I know better than that.
If we want God to bless us and to bless and assist those for whom we pray and as we are gathered with the congregation, we should be attentive and participate along with the others present. He obviously has an explanation for what he was doing at that time.

What do you mean that DNO should be more selective? Are you referring to the picture? There is nothing wrong with the picture. It is a good picture but for the distracted one. He only made himself look ridiculous as if he was bored and was checking his cellular/blackberry. He had no idea or overlooked that pictures would be taken or did he not care. Being in Church, he should have known better. We are obviously wondering what he was doing/checking at that time.

I swear, reading stuff on here makes me never want to visit home. Seriously, do we have to pick at everything? Lord, DA can, and will never move forawrd. While everyone is bashing the guy for being on the phone, which by the way, tablets, IPADS, phones are used all the time during church. Blame the photographer. The purpose of a picture is to tell a story. Give the readers a picture of what happened. Sorry to say, this pictures says nothing about the headline. Start with the editor before you bash the individual. As an editor myself, there is no way I would allow that picture to be posted to any websites. There are rules when photographing.

It is some people as you who make me comment. Are you insinuating that where you reside people do not talk, comment and criticize? Do you ever listen to TV and read the newspapers? What about your family, friends, coworkers or if you attend school, students? No exception, your neighbors. It is said, “People are people everywhere.” Aside of our nationalities, race, color, creed and status, we possess different characteristic and personality traits.”
Depending on the population, it may be worst unless you do not concern yourself with nothing more than yourself. You may be a great pretender.
This would not prevent me from visiting home. What we are doing is exchange of opinions, pro and con. It is good for the mind, heart and soul. How else can we know what people are like?
This is one way of knowing people, even those whom we do not personally know and may never meet. Get this straight! We are all Dominicans. No one can take that away from us.

SMH, you have your own idea of what pictures should be chosen to post. This is your opinion. It does not represent that of others.
Do you view the US TV and read the newspapers? They post and print everything. The same occurs in Canada and no doubt in Europe. When they do, the remarks and criticisms are many. The Media in those countries do not hide anything. The scrutinize every movement of the body and what is stated. This is why there are pictures. Therefore, Dominicans are normal and correct in commenting about the demeanor of this man. I am certain he knows about it. I hope he learned a lesson. DNO did absolutely nothing wrong in posting it. Thank you DNO!

SMH when I read the type of comments that are being shown, I can understand why society is so divided. The views given by persons are so negative that it takes away from the actual reason why the mass was held. 99% of the comments are just negative and to critical. Why do we have to dwell so much on the use of a cellphone. yest, I to believe it was wrong but my god. A mas was held in Roseau, but in time one will be held in their community. Now, when you read such comments, I fully understand why good and honest persons do not put themselves to serve Associations. Thank you DNO for sharing my comments.

From one pic most people assume that the man is texting!

    Wow…so full of it.

Many of the smae are the ones who use their phones at the most inopportune times or wrong times/places; diner table, at a meeting, during a conversation with another, everywhere.

Phones are addictive and are being used, along with other devices over certain other normal things, including books.

I was surprised to see a pastor read off his ipad at church. I was like – damn, even the pastor is modern. I did nto see a bible…everything was on his ipad – everything.

Was he wrong to have written his sermon on a ipad and read the scriptures from there?

I think not – it’s all in keeping with the times.

None of you know what the man was doing with the phone – there are no signs that say leave the phones at the door…..

the world doesnt stop when one is in a church… yes we must respect the house of the Lord but who deems what is disrespectful for each man?

Common sense and respect should dictate to him that he is in a Church. If this was a phone he had in his hand, he should have kept it in his pocket and turned it off. His action was conspicuous enough which gave us a good reason to comment because he was in Church.

Great idea for having this memorial service. And offcourse they choose the right Priest, Father Thomas, who has the nack in bringing comfort to the grieving by his effective means of communication. Though not a Catholic, I will want Father Thomas to do the homily at my funeral. So if what he said above is true, then what was the point of sending he son to die for us so we could have eternal life and celebrating his resurrection, what you call easter? God does not cause death.

Seems like no one knows what God is about and when he does. It all started when our first parent disobey God and the way he made it right again was to send his son. John 3:16

You read only the Bible. We celebrate the Holy Mass. On the night before He was betrayed, He took bread…and wine…, blessed them and gave them to his disciples, saying: “…Do this in memory of Me.” Read the Gospel of John (and other ones) and the writing of St. Paul for this passage and why Catholics celebrate The Mass. The Mass is the essence of our Faith. We are a Eucharistic Church, obeying Our Lord Jesus Christ’s commands. It is in the Bible!

Come on Dominica, stop it you all are too negative. the service could be carried live on a cell phone to another country. You all are too judgemental. Mind your own business. Go and pray

    • Justice and Truth
      April 21, 2013

They are not being negative. Do not blame them. They may not know and understand what he was doing looking at the supposedly tablet in his hand. They are not wrong for commenting on his demeanor in church. If per chance the service was carried live and he was checking his cellular accordingly, he should not have done it in church; not at the front of the church considering that he is in the front pew. He could have gone either to the back of the church or outside to do so. He knows the reason why he is present, to particularly pray for the departed, for their relatives and others as (also) for the Football Team and the officials of the Team who mourn their loss.
His obligation in church was to listen to what was occurring and being said at that moment and to pray with the congregation. It could be, at that moment prayers were being offered, the Gospel was being read or that the priest was preaching. Furthermore, it is disrespectful, primarily to God, to the priest and the congregation (those who specifically observed him) to be distracted in church. He knows the reason why he was present.
It was not appropriate, being in the front pew, doing such a thing. It gives the viewers and DNO readers a poor impression of his action. He will have to confirm and explain his action to those who observed him, who knows him and asked him about it.

  34. Realist
    April 21, 2013

Talk about disregard and callous disrespect for the House of God and the souls that brought these gentlemen there.
There’s a difference in shutting a phone off and staring at the contents/context of a message. Is that what is left in My Country to keep her afloat? To stop the hemorrhage of her perforation?

    Pathetic, ABSOLUTELY pathetic.

    • Justice and Truth
      April 22, 2013

He will have some explanation to do. This is a typical example that also in Toronto and no doubt elsewhere in Canada and other places too often people act disrespectfully in church.
At the commencement of Mass the priest has to ask them to turn off their cellular. Some of them, adults and children, chew gum in church and stick the gum on the pews or kneeler; bad enough some also dress immodestly. He has commented on the attitude of some people in church. He observes them from where he is either sitting or standing.
The priest once stated to us that he views people and notices their demeanor, if they are genuine practicing (holy) people, that if they project godliness (for want of another word), it is encouraging for the priest. This is true.
A US priest once stated on EWTN TV/Radio, “You want holy priests? Pray for them!” How true!
Another one said, “How can you progress in spirituality with that type of attitude when in Church?” I am informing you when people show disrespect in the Consecrated House of God, they bring curses on themselves; not blessings.
When parishioners go to church and appear bored, does it not reflect on the priests and yet it is not (generally) their fault? Instead of following/participating in the Holy Mass, “they busy themselves with other matters”. Would you believe that? Our Lord stated these words and more to a holy nun when He appeared to her and also said how it hurts his heart. Read the Book, The Diary of St. Faustina, Divine Mercy In My Soul. There is a small one, Devotion to the Divine Mercy which contains a few of his messages. Spiritual food for thought.

So there is a pic of a man with a phone in his hands and all of a sudden he is texting or having a IM conversation.

I swear that Dominicans are the most. judgmental people in the world.

How long did he have the phone in his hands, no one knows. It could have been the instant the pic was taken.

Many times I go to church or to functions, only to realize my phone is still on and I have to fumble to put it on vibrate or turn it off.

Probably that is what the guy is doing at the exact moment the pic was taken…. we don’t know ….but all the self-righteous people are actually saying what he is doing as if they saw him with the phone for five minutes or more.

GEEZ, get a freaking life people

It takes discipline to do this. If they were in the legislature or in parliament they would never do that. If per chance it is a cellular and he is checking, texting and sending out messages, he is wrong. God, whom nothing is hidden from, will evaluate his demeanor in His Church. He takes notes.
If only we would keep that in mind, we would be ever obedient to God, respectful in Church and act accordingly wherever we may be. Happiness, peace on earth and eventually Heaven would be our lot.

    • Justice and Truth
      April 22, 2013

If you know him, ask him. If I were in a front pew, I would be extremely careful how I act when in church, before the Altar of God and the priest.
I recall as a child when I went to church with my parents and other members of the family, I dare not talk. Guess what? I cannot recall my parents giving me such a lecture. They acted accordingly and I followed suit, by example.
It shocks me when I observe some members act disrespectfully in church. There are times while the priest is preaching or during the Consecration, some are talking. If they are sitting near me or behind me, I turn to them and put my hand on my mouth to inform them to keep quiet.
If I am able to tell them, I do, be it after Holy Mass or Devotions. Too bad if they get angry but I will tell them. St. Paul said: “Correct people but do it with love.”
You know, if I am sitting/standing near someone who is looking at their cellular or whatever during Mass, do you know what I would do? I would put my hand over it without talking. This should indicate to the person that he/she should put it away. This is to shame the person who should know better.
There are some who do not like to be corrected. How could they please the Lord and eventually obtain eternal salvation if they do not want to be corrected?
Obedience is another virtue which will assist us to obtain eternal salvation. This also applies while in Church. If we refuse to practice it on earth, where will we practice it and what will happen to our souls when we die?

You must think beyond. Is this not a “National” Football Team? I see nothing wrong with having the Service in Roseau. I am assuming that if the Roseau Cathedral was not under repairs, it would have been held there.
It is wise to have a Memorial Service while they are not yet buried, knowing that the Funeral Services will be held in their village of La Plaine. The more prayers for them the better.
A Memorial Service could be held for them at a later date in their village.
Furthermore, not everyone in Roseau, Pottersville and surrounding areas may be able to attend the Funeral Mass due to the distance. This was a good opportunity to have a Service for them so that those in the central/south part of Dominica could attend.

The following is a favorite prayer that I got from a prayer book at the St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, Quebec which I would like to share with you. I love this prayer and always say it for the departed. I have said it so many times that I know it by heart. I do feel it is an effective prayer. Generally, it is said in the singular form “I”. However, when saying it collectively we could use the plural form, “We” which is what I did for those who will see it and pray it. Prayers are never wasted. God hears them and He will do with them as He wills. He saves!
    Prayer for the Departed
They are departed, Lord, after having loved You; sinners who had asked You for pardon.
We can help them to get back to Your presence soon. We implore you in prayer for them. Of ourselves we have but little to offer for them, but in Christ we have the infinity of His merits. Accept them as a deduction from their debt.
Lord, we offer our prayers for those who gave us life, for those who fed us, taught us, cared for us, for those who opened Your way of love to us.
We offer our prayers for all those to whom we did good, and for those whom we may have afflicted.
Enter them, Lord, into Your place of rest, into that peace and joy without end, which You have prepared for them from all eternity.
May they enter into Your infinite glory, Amen!
Eternal rest grant unto the souls of Kurt and Norran, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen!
Lord have mercy! Christ have mercy!

Please people now is not the time to be divided. As far as I’m concerned, all churches on the island could have held a prayer service in honor of the fallen comrades whether its in Roseau or not. And we should try to remember also that because of circumstances with Dominica’s terrain, and all the heavy rainfall we’ve been having these past few days, maybe it was much safer for those residing in the Roseau and environs to have a prayer service in Roseau. They already have lost some members through this rough weather we have had, I don’t think it’s fair that all the rest of the team drive all the way to Laplaine under this weather to a service at this time. Please be reasonable and pray for the family of those who lost loved ones.

It is a sad time for family and friends of Kurt and Norran, the DA National football team and nationals on a whole. From afar I grieve with you, pray with you and for you as I remember, in prayer, their souls.
You are not alone in your grief. Dominicans worldwide are deeply saddened and are mourning your loss. Most of all, God is with you, consoling you and strengthening you.
I echo Fr. Eustace Thomas’ words. Be careful of what we say, how we say it and of stones that we throw for it will return to haunt us. And, the saying, “It is not what we say but how we say it.” Be sensitive of the feelings of those who grieve this great loss. God is taking note.
We are human beings and we know not what is awaiting us down the road, in a twinkling of an eye and what will befall us when we least expect it. Use your words sparingly and lovingly.
There is also a saying, “Words are like atom bombs. Be careful how you use them.”
At this point I must thank DNO for providing, specifically those of us abroad, informed of current news which keep us close in heart, mind and spirit with also our DA roots, an opportunity we did not fully have in previous years. DNO, it is greatly appreciated. Thank you immensely!

It appears you do not think. It is to be expected that sometime there will be a Memorial Service for them in La Plaine. Furthermore, are they not being buried in La Plaine? If so, a Funeral Mass will be held there for them.

there will be time for a memorial mass in LaPlaine, but did you seriously want the whole national team and the DFA executive back on the these roads in still such dangerous weather conditions…..please dont make too much out of this…let Kirt and Norran rest in peace….
