An Olympic fairy tale gone horribly wrong

The island’s reps posed with president of the Dominica Olympic Committee, Felix Wilson (left) in Sochi, Russia

It was one of those poignant Olympic stories, an American hedge-fund manager and his Italian-born wife who had visited Dominica, helped build a children’s hospital there, been granted citizenship, taken up cross country skiing and now in their late 40s were the first athletes representing the tiny Caribbean island at the Winter Olympics.

“It did sound like a fairy tale,” Angelica Morrone di Silvestri said.

It’s not.

The di Silvestris, Gary and Angelica, both ended up in Russian hospitals the day after walking in Opening Ceremony. She missed her event, the 10-kilometer classic race held on Feb. 13. Gary managed to start the 15-kilometer classic the following day, then collapsed after one lap in the stadium and never finished.

DOC President, Felix Wilson, is the same guy who was in charge of the Athletes at the 1996 Olympic Games and refused to let Jerome Romain’s coach enter the Olympic Village and be with Jerome to coach him during the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta. Jerome’s coach paid all his expenses to be in Atlanta, and Felix refused him access to Jerome, at a time when Dominica’s hopes was pinned on Jerome to bring home a medal. Jerome was a World Champion for Dominica, holder of a bronze medal at the World Championships. He also humiliated Hermine Joseph and Dr. Kelsick at the Atlanta Games and made them cry like babies. Hermine Joseph got so sick as a result of his bellicose behavior that she could not perform. Felix totally ruined Dominica’s chances of having an Olympic medal holder on her (Dominica) historic entry into the Olympic arena.
This DOC President is only interested in traveling the world, he has demonstrated that he is not interested in the development of sports in Dominica. For that reason he will do anything and everything to remain as President of DOC for life.
P.S. Where is Dominica’s Athletic track after 18 years of participating in the Olympic Games???

The subject matter is also for the information of your readers/users. It pertains to which Media outlet receives the News first. Worldwide, there is a lot of competition among the Media to be the first to get the News and to broadcast it.
    Thank you for allowing it.

Which country has the most medals? It depends where you get your News – first. How true!

    February 10, 2014 6:37:05 PM

While Canada is “winning” the Olympics at the end of its third day in Sochi, with no official Olympic medal count, which country is actually atop at the Games depends on what news outlet you turn to.
Canada ended its third day at the Winter Games in Sochi ahead of every other country with seven medals.
But the Netherlands and Norway also had seven — in the Netherlands’ case, three gold medals too. So why then is Canada “winning” the Olympic Games?
The reality is that medal tables are the creation of media outlets. The International Olympic Committee, in fact, has specifically ruled out keeping its own medal table, saying in its charter that “The IOC and the OCOG (Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games) shall not draw up any global ranking per country.”
This leaves it up to media to decide rankings. And those rankings often depend on what media outlet you turn to for news.
Many outlets appear to be using the gold-first system rather than a total-medals won system. The gold-first system ranks countries based on the number of gold medals that country has. If teams are tied in gold medals, then the number of silver medals is looked at to determine which country is on top, then bronze medals if necessary.
The Canadian Press’s medal count, which CTV News is using on its website, employs the gold-first system, placing Canada on top at the end of Day 3. Canada and the Netherlands each have three gold medals, but Canada has three silver medals, while the Netherlands has just one. Germany sits in fifth place with just two medals, ahead of Russia with six – that’s because both of Germany’s medals are gold, while Russia has just a single gold.
And despite the IOC ruling of not keeping medal tables, the official Sochi 2014 website has a medal table that appears to be using the gold-first system.
The Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press, however, appear to be using a hybrid system based on the gold-first system as well as total medals won. Russia, for example, sits ahead of the U.S. because it has six total medals compared to the U.S.’s five — this despite the fact that U.S. has one more gold than Russia. This suggests that the WSJ and AP medal tables are at least in part determined by overall medals won. But the WSJ and AP are also using the gold-first system to determine rankings when teams are tied in overall medals won. The outlets have Poland, for example, sitting in 12th place with one gold medal, while Slovenia is in 15th place with one silver. When teams are tied, gold reigns supreme.
If you’re confused about how to calculate rankings, just remember that there’s no one official way. And while a huge part of the Olympics is about national pride, it’s also about the individual athletes who take home the gold, silver and bronze.

Note: This information is also for those who questioned why Dominicans did not receive the News about the plight of the di Silvestris, why the husband failed to complete the race and his wife did not show up for it.
Dominicans were misled about this right from the beginning as some commented negatively without knowing the reason why this situation occurred. Some did not give it a thought that there would be a valid explanation why this occurred.
The intelligent ones, who were few, who utilized their common sense, knew that something was wrong which was not willful.
It pays to know the truth first prior to commenting and negatively so.
As it is stated, in the end it depends which Media outlet gets the News first and broadcasts it.

DNO, I hope you will permit the following. It should be of interest to DNO’s readers/users. I love sharing information specifically such as this. Please take note of this:

The Canadian company that’s bringing snow to Sochi, Russia

    CTVNews.ca Staff, February 18, 2014 1:02:19 PM

It’s impossible to host the Winter Olympics without snow, but the sunny skies and rising temperatures in Sochi are causing some problems for Olympic organizers and athletes.
That’s why a Toronto-based company has been working around the clock to help transform sub-tropical Sochi into something that resembles winter.
IceGen Inc. is running a 24/7 operation at the Olympic ski jump and cross-country skiing venues, where there hasn’t been a single day of below freezing temperatures since the Games began.
What sets IceGen apart from other snow-making operations in Sochi is that it’s the only company that can produce snow even when temperatures hover around the 20 C mark.
“I would call it spring snow,” says IceGen business developer David Bowden. “It’s not fluffy December snow coming out of the sky, it’s the kind of heavy packing snow that you find in the spring. But it’s a lot nicer than cross-country skiing in mud.”
Bowden told CTV’s Canada AM on Tuesday that IceGen has three truck trailers creating about 30,000 cubic feet of “slurry ice” daily.
“Think of a frozen margarita or Slurpee,” he said. “It’s a mix of really fine crystals of ice floating in water.”
The slurry mixture is put into large separation towers, in which the ice floats to the top and water sinks to the bottom.
The machines differ from snow cannons, often used at ski resorts, in that the cannons can only make snow at 0 C or colder.
IceGen had athletes test out the snow two years ahead of the Sochi Games.
“We did a lot of experimentation in Norway and Finland,” Bowden said. “We had athletes ski on it in August and September and said they said it’s great snow, it’s very skiable.”

Russia got to host the Winter Olympics. Russia did not have enough snow. Toronto should have hosted the Olympics or some other country where there would be more snow than Russia. We have a lot of snow. There would be no need to make artificial snow.
Angelica complained about the ground not having sufficient snow. This inhibited her progress when she was out there.

Canada, if I am not mistaken, Toronto will be hosting the next Pan Am games.

What an embarrassment for Dominica. Passports for sale; Olympic representation for sale, WTH? The Olympics is not a place to go and practice your hobby – this is an arena for world class athletes. What are these two doing representing Dominica? I am embarrassed for my island.

It is not only world class athletes that join the olympics= exotic participants get a lot of attencion too- like Vanessa Mae from Thailand, Prince Hohenlohe from Mexico, the guys from Caymen I., Togo, Jamaica,… It`s taking part that counts! Dominica has very skilled athletes according to the trainer of the summer olyimpic team. So who knows…!?

I knew that something went wrong with the di Silvertris. This is why I had stated there is more to this story. One would not complete it and the other was a no-show. This is the impression they got from DNO’s posting. Nevertheless, they never gave it a thought that there must be some explanation to this. Having read it, I can tell you it is much more than anyone of you and I envisioned.
Their experience is now out in the open. Instead of some of you thanking them and wishing them well you prefer dwelling on what was stated about funding for a chlldren’s hospital and the passports.
You depict your limited minds which do not think beyond. It does not even cross your mind that they may have given to the children’s ward.
You never give the benefit of the doubt but lambaste them as you always do with others.
Think prior to writing and commenting. Otherwise you project a narrow-minded, negative and uneducated mind/person. It is what you state which give others a poor impression of you. This also reflects on all D/cans. Think of others and what will be stated about you when you write and what you write about.
Based under the circumstances, the di Silvetris deserve much better, respect, compassion and understanding from Dominicans. This means, ungrateful people. Put yourselves in their position.

Guys this is not good news for DA. When I heard of Gary di Silvestri representing Dominica at the Olympics I was, like most Dominican I would guess, kinda excited, hoping maybe we could get some millage, and who knows a spot in the finals. So I Google Gary di Silvestri to see what chances he and his wife had at medaling at the event but rather came across some tax issues in Turks. To be honest I really assumed that it was a different Gary di Silvestri. I almost post the link to the articles on DNO, but thought it can’t be the same person.

As a Googler I am now Googling this guy Gary di Silvestri again, and just read some of what has been posting:

OMG! As a Dominican I am truly embarrassed by the vast majority of comments here. While I believe there are questions that should be answered the level and category of commentary is pathetic and sad! I too am curious about the ‘children’s hospital’ and citizenship.

The comments need to be focused and not tear down our beloved country. Someone made the valid point of other people wanting to fly our flag. That speaks volumes and makes me proud! The comments from my fellow Dominicans don’t. How many of us would carry the flag of another country? I’d imagine most if not all of ‘those commentators’.

Let us rise up people. Let us educate ourselves. Let us ask questions and seek knowledge when we don’t know. Let us pause and ponder. Let us treat others like we want to be treated.

To the Olympians I say thanks for flying our flag. Sorry it turned out this way and wish you speedy recovery.

Fellow citizen, I understand your desire to be proud of our country, but realize Dominicans want to be proud of true accomplishments, not fly-by-night show efforts.

Dominica and Dominicans have many great qualities worth celebrating, we do not need foreigners who are already caught up in fraudulent activities flying our flag for us.

Furthermore, before they represented our country, our Olympic committee should have informed us and allowed us to meet our Olympic “representatives” before their exposure to the World. We still haven’t received a response or official commentary by our Dominican Olympic committee.

This is not good enough for us. Not anymore. We are not a desperate, third world backwater. We demand transparency, respect and the opportunity to present ourselves to the world in a proper and becoming way. Help us raise our standards not accept BS and lies under the guise of publicity and national pride!

Oh so now we move from a Hospital to Chidrens Ward? You better stop lying because with their permission I will list the names of the 11 Dominicans past CHS girls who made it possible! This silent work and equipment you are seeing in that hospital, the diapers, anti-bacterial creams etc are part of an even larger donation with down to a CAT scan headed to Dominica made possible by some silent donors, after one took her son to the hospital while on vacation. Shut your lying face! You all are even discrediting Dominicans to give others a pass! A hospital is what they say they’ve built stop lying!

Broward General Hospital will always be Broward General Hospital, but Chris Evert Lloyd added a wing and it is called the Chris Evert “children’s hospital”. Do you think Miami’s children’s hospital is a hospital in itself? No, it is a wing at the hospital. So, if a ward at the PMH is called a “children’s hospital” that is what it is. We should be grateful and appreciative.

I believe that the couple gave financial gifts to the Govt to aide in the betterment of medical needs of children in Dominica. Maybe it was given to the Govt for PMH to be only utilize for children. A lot of philanthropists do that. It could be another media typo or mis interpretation. Instead of us reading into the negative, sit back and be quiet until the facts unfold!

DNO is a Media outlet. This is what the Media does. Ever heard the US and Canadian news and the manner in which they broadcast it?
In Toronto, for some years, I have stated I would rather not hear even the daily weather forecast for if I listen to it as the Media broadcasts it, I will not want to go out. Since it is winter, I simply dress warmly and forget about the Media broadcast.
This is merely one example of their exaggeration and over broadcasting. They never under-broadcast; always over-broadcast. That is the Media. Just as your Radio Station Q95 :?: Blowing everything out of proportion.

Do not be angry if people say that Dominica is underdeveloped. If certain previous governments would have developed Dominica, it would have been developed a long time ago. They did not take such an interest in Dominica.
In addition, in this 21st century when some people have no bathroom facilities in their home and no means of obtaining one unless the government assists them, this is one manner of being underdeveloped.
Therefore, do not criticize the government if it builds housing projects and also provides bathroom facilities to those who do not have one in their home.

How will they know Dominica now? “Oh, that island that sent those tax fraud billionaires to the Olympics”? “Dominica, the haven for international criminals?” “Oh, that Dominica, the one where anyone can get diplomatic immunity for the right price?”

So what if people think Dominica is the Dominican Republic. People ask me, all the time, if I am from the Dominican Republic. I tell them I do not speak Spanish. To those who do not know where Dominica is located, I tell them. Thanks to DNO I can see and show my children the many locations in Dominica that I NEVER knew anything about, and I AM DOMINICAN. The government is not to be blamed about Dominica and its name.
On the other matters, you are also over-reacting. The di Silvestris did not take advantage of Dominica and the passports given to them. Bet they travel on their original passport except probably to Russia and I wonder if they did.
I do not know why some of you make such a fuss, in this case about the Dominican passports which they were given some years ago. They probably earned it and deserve it.
Many D/cans who reside abroad do not have a D/can passport or did not bother to apply for one after it expired. Those who are citizens of the country they reside use this passport and do not bother to get a D/can passport. The passport which they hold has their country of birth, etc. Furthermore, it is worthwhile traveling with that passport rather than the D/can one. They are registered as citizens of the resident country. Should problems occur wherever they may be, that government will send help for them to get them out of the country.
Imagine if this occurred while visiting D/ca, their land of birth and they hold a Canadian, US and European passport, those governments will come to their rescue if they contact them. How about that? What is the D/can passport really worth for them?

Be careful you do not think that attracting investors mean tacitly agreeing to everything. The money for the Children hospital was sent to Dominica. But all the cash went to the pockets of the people who organized that trip.
Let us follow the trail to see where it leads to.
I hope Skerro will comment on this one too.

What a story. Thank You to the di Silvestris; with this story, do we see why we should always have a complete story before making wild accusations of what we know nothing about. The woman was in a hospital bed with a broken nose. Ma Gwa Sa!!

Dominica has tens of thousands of young Dominicans born and living in the snow covered countries, mine included; none of us have the courage to do what these people have done to represent Dominica in a Winter Olympics but we can stay behind our computers and be anything but kind for the no show and the unfinished race.

How many countries who did not make the finished line in their sport. We Dominicans must do better than that.

Once again I thank the di Silvestris for carrying our flag up high for all to see from a country who has no winters but have people leaving in countries who have winters and yet have never thought of representing Dominica.

Now that we see Dominica can compete in the Winter Olympics maybe our children can join a winter games club and prepare for the next Winter Olympics.

Thanks DNO for the update on our Olympians. I wish them a speedy recovery and Thanks again.

Thanks for not having on to the ignorance off the rest. We’ve come a long way. Kudos to them for taking interest and using their own funds. Ask yourselves what have I done for my country?

“none of us have the courage to do what these people have done” by courage do you mean billions, connections and the ability to claim “unknown” charitable works in a country with no clearing up by gov’t officials?

The DiSilvestri’s can do whatever our government allows them to get away with, they don’t owe Dominicans the truth…but our government who we pay every month and who serves us need to clear the air on this. This was a national embarrassment and as it relates to economic citizenship, issues of legality come into play here. Are they lying, or is charitable works a part of the economic citizenship program?

See the Wilson face!! I want Felix Wilson to tell Dominica and the world where is this state of the art children’s hospital located. Currently we are trying to assist 3 children ages 4-8 to seek medical care in the US, Barbados and Martinique, so enlighten me and the worried parents. Some people will stoop too damn low for their own publicity. This is one issue I will not let die. Where in Dominica is the Childrens’ Hospital located? Then you have a set of sick, twisted, all for myself folks, who defend this evil and abhorrent lie and attack Dominicans as being ungrateful. Nobody knew of this sham. All these tired, self serving people wanted is a shot at something on their bucket list. All their money couldn’t buy them a spot in Olympics, so they found a set of greedy, dishonest liars, rubbed their palms and now they are carrying this lie about hospital, abusing the most vulnerable citizens to get fame is just downright low. This is sickening to the core. Heartless!!!!

I get the impression that they may have been asked to contribute to the fund aired for the construction of a children’s hospital in order to get citizenship. However, I have never heard any Government Minister spoke about plans for the construction of a children’s hospital; not even during the Budget Debate.
If the Government was transparent and accountable all of these un-palatable discussions would have been avoided. Some of us are angry with the bloggers but we a fedup of Dominica always being in some muddy discussion. Have you seen the list of court matters which are surrounding these people?
