Three students of the Purple Dragon karate club in Dominica, were successful in grading examinations held recently in Trinidad.

Michael Pemberton achieved the milestone of being one of the youngest students in Dominica to obtain a 2nd degree black. Jodi Andrew and Malik Nixon each received a 1st degree black belt.

Sensei of the Purple Dragon dojo in Dominica, Shannah Robin, told DNO that the examination  was the hardest to date as the students had to undergo various tests for three straight days with only six hours of sleep and could only eat fruit and vegetables.

He said the examination entailed jungle and military type of training and the students had to climb over an 18 foot fence and do over 500 squats and other difficult drills.

There were over 30 participants from six countries around the world ranging in ages from 10 to 47.

Robin noted that Purple Dragon is the only karate school in the world with that type of examination.

He said he was extremely happy with the results achieved by his students and his only disappointment was that his group was made to pay departure tax on their way to represent the country.

Three parents accompanied the students to Trinidad.

GREAT JOB SENSEI. Hard work and perseverance always pay off. Congratulations Michael, Jodi and Malik. A pity I could not join you all for grading this time because of work.

I will be in the next grading in December. Success

And to the other students, remember affirmation to Don Jitsu Ryu Forms Five -“I will Persist until I succeed, I was not delivered in this world in defeat” and affirmation Don Jitsu Ryu Forms six – “Failure will no longer be my payment for my struggles”. see you all next week.

Proud of you Sensei. You try so hard to ensure that these kids ecxel, not only in karate but also academically and mentally. You are an inspiration.
Your level of determination and self confidence is remarkable. The sky your limit. You started with nothing, persevered and now you built and own your dojo building. Your story is one to tell. These kids should really look up to you.
I am a former exercise student of yours and I admire you.

I have to commend the students for doing so very well in this grading. However its one of the ways we build character and discipline as a nation and this has to be encouraged at all times. However am also of the view that the leaders must bot seen to be double standard and having agendas and appear to be what theyre not.. What is may not be what they are in reality. Well done Dominica, And when our kids are being molested sexually and physically and psychologically at many places; its nice that we can emergence champions on that karate stage in full view and not in private. well done!!

      April 20, 2014

what you mean the government should back him up? u think is for free he giving those karate classes nuh? is not a charity he running. the man is self-employed and making a lot of money……..what tax-payers money have to do with that?!

Wonder how Sensei Shanna does it: Having to lead the club to produce such good results; a lead male dancer of Kubuli Dance Theatre Co…. A farmer… and more. As my Mom would have said, “Hard work don’t kill.” Keep on doing it

  24. But wait
    April 19, 2014

Shannon… if you wanted exemption, you do not just go to the airport and say you going to represent Dominica so u should be exempt… you have to get exemption from the ministry and i am sure if u had done the necessary procedures to get exemption from departure tax u would have gotten it. Too often we do not plan and organize properly and blame the authorities who are only doing their jobs.

    • chow mien
      April 19, 2014

are u sure that is what happened. It is not the first time that Shannon went abroad with a group. So it is very possible that he did the correct procedures and was denied. Some other youth group traveling this year was also denied exemptions and they applied in advance.

When the govt. give a few select party lackeys undue exemptions on luxury cars and other items they have to find some scapegoat to pass the buck to. Furthermore not one Chinese driver (on all these state projects which Dominicans pay loan on), pays any license fee. Yet youth ambassadors have to pay exit tax for going out to do the country proud.

Any congrats to Shannon and his team including the very supportive parents.

    April 19, 2014

Wonderful job. Did he request a waiver for departure tax or did they just show up at the airport hoping they would not be charged? The clerk cannot make that decision on his own. .

It is not the amount but the principle. Other developed countries when you fly have the tax included in their ticket price. I never understand why in Dominica you have to join a second line, outside the building to pay separately again. That is backward development.

      • OPINION
        April 20, 2014

i do not agree with ur second sentence. I travel alot, other countries hAve the same extra tax as dominica.
HOWEVER,……. you are right, its a matter of principles.

      • April 21, 2014

Thank you for saying this. It’s a stupidly organised tax, that, among other things, ensures that each tourists’ last moment in Dominica is a negative one. It should be done away with entirely.

      April 19, 2014

Even if was a little $1 your country ambassodors should not have to pay. We all need to give honor where it is due.

      • But wait
        April 20, 2014

That’s not how things are done. One cannot just walk to the airport and say they going to represent Dominica so they shouldnt have to pay tax. All they have to do is before the trip check with the ministry and get exemption. Is nobody’s fault that Dominicans do not get familiar with procedures…all they do is run their mouth……
