Ron Green laments ‘neglect of sports’ in southeast

Green firmly believes there is a neglect of sports in the southeast
Green firmly believes there is a neglect of sports in the southeast

Senator and former minister of sports, Ron Green, is blaming neglect, mismanagement and politics for the decline of sports in the southeastern section of the island, especially La Plaine.

This after the Southeast Under 17 Football Team displayed ‘mediocre’ performance in a Friendship Tournament in Morne A L’Eau, Guadeloupe on the Easter weekend. The team did not make it to the top two of the 15 teams which participated.

Green is convinced enough is not being done to develop sports in the southeast and is blasting MP Petter Saint Jean for not doing enough.

“Three years of neglect, mismanagement and disinterest have seriously affected sports development in the entire Southeast, especially La Plaine,” he said. “The miserable record of poorly maintained and incompleted playing fields have hampered our development.”

He said in La Plaine, a completed sports facility, being merely improved, has denied three years of talent development for footballers. He said some of these footballers would have been selected for the national team.

“Senior players like Scot Hazel and Vince Matthew of La Plaine on this Under 17 Team come to mind,” he said.

Green noted that these players put determined efforts at the just completed tournament against Gaudeloupe players “who have access to top facilities, training, and play regularly as a Team.”

“Our facilities have been hijacked by selfish leaders who have no idea about sports,” he stated. “The Southeast Team Under 17 had occasional training in below standard Terre Ham, Riviere Cyrique while sports field projects in La Plaine and Grand Fond languish incomplete due to Parliamentary Representative neglect, and DLP Government mismanagement and disinterest.”

He went on to say that politics is playing a big role in the decline of sports in the area.

“Even the La Plaine Youth Sports Academy (LYSA), set up to promote and build talent in age groups from 8 to 15 in 2011, who organized this Under 17 Tour has been subjected to petty political bias,” he alleged.

He noted that in addition to the lack of playing facilities, LYSA has been “denied access to government bus facilities afforded other sports and church groups by the parliamentary representative.”

Green, who is contesting the next General Elections after a much disputed and controversial loss by 2 votes in 2009, and who manages the Under 17 Team, is calling on all right thinking people and sports fans to “raise their voices in loud condemnation of the laissez faire approach and gross neglect in seeing to the completion of the sports fields in the Southeast.”

“There is an irretrievable cost to our young sportsmen who lose years of their active talent development and team building,” he noted. “It is simply unacceptable that our young people have to suffer this embarrassment and the clearest indicator that those responsible have failed our youth.”

Efforts to contact Saint Jean on the matter proved futile.

its surprising that after Ron failed to do a proper job on the Laplain play field during his term as minister of sports which was left in complete by the freedom party and his deliberate destruction of what was left of the grand fond play field without plans for the construction of a new play field for the sports men Youths & women of grand fond he is now blaming peter for the state of our facilities? he should in stead extending congratulation`s to peter for the remarkable job being undertaken on the grand fond New play field &the upgrade of the la plain field . within a few months there shall be two of the best facilities on Island opening in the south East .we were there then,we are also seeing what is happening now ! cant you see? are you blind?

Ron Green, I tried my very best not to comment; however I can no longer contain myself. While you were picketing a few months ago, I advised you to:

    Goooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhoooooooooommmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

For a moment I thought you would have done as cousin, James, and cousin Provost has decided to do; I blame you for the final nail in the UWP coffin in the last election; you had your chance and you blew it, you could not even produce a party manifesto, hence, you had no plans; as a result you caused the UWP to loose the election.

If I were you, trying to slip back into the arena, I would maintain a very low profile excepts in the constituency you hope to represent; and you had better make sure the people are on your side before you start making useless, and inappropriate comments.

Furthermore, you had better have something better than sports to talk about because the needs of the people in the villages where you said are neglected in the area of sports needs are much greater than any sporting events. You had better start talking to the people obtaining information from them as to what sort of industry they would like to have developed in their community, which can provide employment for the people of the village.

That should be your number one priority; and not talking crap about neglect of sports: Sports can come anytime, and let me conclude that Government is not obligated into any sporting events, or the promotion of any sporting skills, that is a matter for the individual ambition.

When I was a kid going to School in Wesley, we played cricket, at recess, I cannot remember the colonial government buying bats and balls for us to practice, or play other schools such as Marigot, and Woodford Hill, we practice, and proved our talent, our parent expense. The first time I held a bat and took up my position at the crease, the first time; the first ball was bowled to me, and I executed a stroke, I was immediately identified by the late James Timothy as a slugger.

We knew who was better to field at slip, or who would be better in the gully, or at leg.

And if you do not remember James Timothy, his records in sporting events can be found at the DGS, he has won all of the sporting events he participated in while he attended the DGS, a former teacher, later became an Methodist religious minister, in recent years he returned to Dominica where he served as Superintend of the Methodist Church before his demised about four three years ago in Wesley.

I also practice in Wesley with one of the best Spin bowlers and Batman to represent Dominica at first class cricket, I believe he is yet alive, his name is Reginald Armor, from Eden Road in Wesley, he held a wicket for three days in a match against Grenada in Dominica, not out, in those days government was not involved in cricket nor any other sports, I say all of this to say government is not obligated to do anything to enhance the skill of anyone except for the providing of public parks, and playing fields where whosoever wish can go and practice and develop their skills.

Thank You, Mr. Prime Minister, listening to Real Talk on KAIRI FM, this evening; “The Truth Will Reveal Itself.” It was a really eye and mind opener. The Truth is exactly what was being spoken; no illusions, just facts. There is just no way Dominicans in their right minds will vote out the Labour Party and This Prime Minister and replace them with the UWP.

I hope the UWP supporters listened because their future and their children’s future is at stake after the mess UWP did while in government and some of them had experience in in opposition before forming government and they made and left a great mess.

Much less now as this new crop of the UWP Candidates know nothing about the workings of Government. They are all Newbie and this change we say no thank you to.

All The Way With The Labour Party for the sake of Dominica.

Personally I don’t want to hear anything Ron have to say about sports in La Plaine. After over fifty years of using The playing field we grew up with by Mr Hurtault it was stripped from us under his leadership and he did nothing about it. Instead a piece of land full of rocks, faced with so much adversity is being used to develop into a playing field. The goons of the UWP would drive on the playing field to prevent the grass from growing. Mr Green accept the fact that you are no longer the parl rep of La Plaine and move on. You and your agents have divided la plaine long enough. La plaine was not willed to you and your family. Tonneh

I know a bit more than the average reader Mr. Green.
Your statement is partially true. The government should ensure that sports facilities are available to all the young men and women of the community. I will not defend Mr. St. Jean.
But there are particulars to this case.
It was the Dominica Football Association (DFA) who promised in April or May 2011 that they would have the playing field repaired and playable by August or September of that same year. There was an upcoming football league that was cancelled as a result of the ‘repairs’. DFA and JARS engineering poorly executed the project and bit of more than they could chew. What we were left with was a mess that was now unusable and no more money for work.
The Government stepped in and invested money into the playing field after about a year of inactivity. The field was ready for grassing.
The very same rain that caused the death of Kirt and Norran also washed away majority of the soil, requiring another investment of resources.

Truth be told, the field should already have been completed. But to say the Gov’t neglects sports and use the playing field as exhibit A is hardly fair.

The government has largely neglected sports Island wide. If you are living in space, you really don’t know what is happening on land.

      April 23, 2014

@fair and balanced, you forgot to mention that DFA and them did not even consult with the sports committee and the Parl Rep when they started. It is Ron,s modus Operandi to use subtle ways to undermine, and his followers are used as pawns. By the grace of God Petter will finish what he started. In the mean time play basket ball.

It is clear that this administration don’t have sports high on their priority. Money that could be spent on a Olympic standard synthetic track was thrown in the state house to benefit one man and his friends. Our athletes could be performing better. And we could even host games such as the carifta games.

    • Sout Man
      April 23, 2014

Funds loaned to us or donated to us by foreign governments are DEDICATED to SPECIFIC projects. We can submit proposals for synthetic tracks, of course. But getting approved is a long shot. Why don’t the politicians quit lying and tell the people the truth about how approved loans or donations are targeted towards specific projects?

Mr. Green made a few observations that must be examined closely and honestly. I must say from the start that I voted for Mr. St.Jean last elections but am still not sure where I will vote this time, while I cannot say I like Peter I must admit that the young man has done a lot in his four years as parl rep.

Ron speaks of mediocrity among sportsmen in La Plaine but he must stop blanking Petter for that and get rid of the coach who is a known drug user and is often seen smoking on the field with the young boys. He must also stop the negative talk and disrespect for authority that he constantly exhibits along with the leaders of LYSA since that has a lasting impression on the young minds which they are supposed to shape.

On the question of politics in sports all the people of La Plaine know that it is Ron and his fellers who divided La Plaine firstly by refusing to recognize the young man as parl rep.Ron as a leader should do better than that. While Petter has a responsibility to finish the playing field Ron knows that it was Patrick John, Balla and White who played cheap DFA politics and messed up the La Plaine playing field.

As a former councillor I am aware that LYSA has been given the school bus several times and Ron should be man enough to say the the South East Team which he manages has never been refused the use of the same bus though they had sponsorship that included transportation.
It is clear that Peter has a lot to deliver to please us in La Plaine to earn himself another term in office but Ron having been in politics since 1979 has failed us miserably and is not the nice smiling gentleman that he appears to be. Peter rules with a rod of iron and I have problems with that but Ron uses his agents todivide La Plaine hoping that he will have a chance to rule again. TThat’s the way I see it so I must say it.

fish and chips, Ithink you chose the wrong name,
Also ,you seem to be very young, too young to have seen uwp type of governance,
EVery honest dominican who believe in truth will admit that the time our economy grew the most was with the uwp ,
So if you were young ,please ask some honest person who will not be politically bias,
I think for too long we have been feeding the youths with untruths, which contributes to them making wrong choices
I did business under all three governments, but with all honesty ,this is by far , the worst situation we have ever found ourselves, under this labor government,
but what is very strange is that ,this labor government has made the most money in grants,in loans in releafs, and rediculously taxed the poor citizens of this country,
What they will not tell you is that ,
In uwp four and a half years in office , not one dollar tax was added on the back of dominican people ,they were always a competent team that knew what they were about,
they werent concern about ,who voted them,,instead ,they worked for all dominicans,
Just look at portsmouth ,where they lost their deposit , we got the most from the the pie, including the 50 housing skim houses at chance which reggie admitted the monies were passed unto them, but they would build 25 instead , Only 6 six started and not one completed, SHAME ON THE DLP,who the portsmouth people have supported for over 50 years ,TELL those things to the youths, teach them the truth ,and we were also the first to benefit ,but the laborites wont tell you so, and this is why we in portsmouth are in that situation right now ,we should be grateful to the uwp, ,, IS our wicked ways that have us so,the facts are there,
But all we have now is really a bunch of young footballers just enriching their selves and kicking balls,
YOUNG PEOPLE,to tell you the truth, ITS the first time in my lifetime i see land have become rougther than see, there is no future in dlp

Truth, it may do you good to live up to your name; Truth:

You know you are speaking anything but the truth here. I know the truth hurts but if the UWP supporters are honest and truthful with themselves the truth, though, it might hurt to face reality, in the long run, it will set them free.

Now Truth; the UWP met a vibrant economy when they took over. Yes or No?

Was the UWP formed because the then Manager of Bananas I understand wanted to be the highest earning person in the Government of Dominica’s employ – is that a No or Yes?

When the then Prime Minister, Miss Charles of Blessed Memory, said that will not happen on my watch, what did the man in charge of bananas do? You tell us the truth. Truth, the records are there for all to know.

If in 4 1/2 years the UWP never raised taxes – no wonder the country was broke when they left. How were they suppose to run a country when they used up all the money and assets left by the previous government and nothing coming in? No wonder the Labour Party had to call for help as soon as they came in and saw the state of the economy.

Remember the IMF and Hon. Pierre Charles of Blessed Memory? – Is that a truth or an untruth, Truth?

Because all the money that was left in the treasure by the Eugenia Charles Government including a vibrant owned Utility Company that was making money for the country; The UWP squandered all away. Is that a truth or an untruth, Truth? Does Dominica own that Utility Company? We are speaking the truth now and if not why not? Truth?

Is it true during the UWP reign that Civil Servants were not always getting paid? And whenever they did, never on time? Is that a truth or untruth, Truth?

You get my drift Truth? The Truth is there for all, both young and old especially the young, because that is how we learn, history is a powerful tool, we learn from and we understand; and that is why people work very hard to make sure that some history never repeat itself.

Like allowing the UWP or whatever they choose to call themselves these days, back to lead our government; isn’t that right Truth? Wouldn’t you agree?

Tell me Truth would you like to live in slavery? Maybe there are no Dominicans alive today, who lived through slavery becatuse we are all too young. But what we do know about slavery would you want to go back to those times, Truth? This I can answer for you, of course not; because you knew it happened even if you were too young to have lived through it.

So Truth, it would be very wise of you, to get to know the whole truth of what happened when the UWP was in government and whether you would you would really and truthfully want Dominica back in those days. And look who want to lead the UWP in government. Truth? Can you picture that? I close my eyes tight whenever I think of that. What experience are they taking with them to the table?

You mean Dominicans would really do that Instead of the current PM and his Cabinet? Truth? Are you serious, in this day and age?

The way Dominica has matured and keeps moving up to the Next Level; is respected all over; that is why we have such good friends who believes in our Leaders? So Truth are you for real? Even you Truth know the truth, I m sure of it. You just needed some confirmation – I hope I was able to jolt your memory of the truth, Truth.

And you have a good name. Try to live up to it. Are you going to St. Joe on May 5th? Wear something red, I believe all Dominicans are welcome. But only if you are interested in the truth, Truth.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        April 24, 2014

Mr/Sir madam Fish; whereas you wish people to speak the truth, you are not completely honest with the truth!

The bottom line is the UWP was formed in order to get rid of Eugenia Charles who held Dominica in bondage for almost twenty years without accomplishing much except for bringing some credibility to the name government in Dominica!

She accomplished that by becoming the first Prime Minister to honor Dominica’s debt abroad, and at home. Prior to Eugenia Charles, Dominica Government would credit merchandise from the local merchants, and they would simply refuse to pay the merchants; Eugenia Charles change that.

I am not a fan of the lady, because I have personally experience her wickedness, as a kid of thirteen years old, I experience her leaving an accuse she was supposed to be representing in court got more than seven (7) in jail while she was having lunch with the man who accused him of stealing fertilizer from the Melville Hall Estate. I experience her created Land Slide in four coners of Dominica in order to prevent the people of the rual districts on the North, and south and east were the late Wordsworth Telemaque served as a young police officer, he was loved by all who knew him.

In spite of that I credit her for bringing some credibility to the name government in Dominica, and even at that this present Labor Party screwed again when they reused to repay the Government of Trinidad for money spent on the St. Andrews Secondary School in Wesley, and the International Airport shut down by this present Labor Party Government.

If we are dabbling into politics, let us face the truth as it is. I was not in Dominica living during the less than five years the UWP served, nevertheless there are people who are convinced that the UWP did more in less than four years, than the DFP did in more than fifteen years, and that’s the truth!

So, as MP for Laplaine and a minister in the UWP administration, why didn’t Ron build a proper playing field, then? He had five years (they chose 4 1/2) and he is blaming someone who hasn’t completed an upgrade in 3 years!

He manages the football team and he waited for a humiliated defeat in Guadeloupe to realize that his boys were not prepared. That reminds me of his mismanagement of the UWP in the last election which he ran without a manifesto. Mr. Green, some villagers still play soccer on the streets. Prepare your boys before taking them on tour.

So we talking ’bout Leblanc, PJ, OJ, Dame Mamo, EJ, Roosie, Pierro and Skerro. All these years Laplaine was represented by a minister in the ruling administration, including the accuser, Ron Green. A proper playing field just wasn’t their priority.

Leblanc concentrated on roads, schools and electricity; “shemein wevay o’vant”. Laplaine, Grand Bay, Castle Bruce, Vieille Case and Goodwill, got huge modern primary schools “begged for ” and donated by PM Pierre Trudeau of Canada, in the late 60’s early 70’s. Many villages got potable water in the 70’s. Roads were rehabilitated and secondary education was expanded in the 70’s and 80’s. Banana started its decline in the 90’s. more road rehabilitation in the 2000’s under extreme global economic decline. Yet, governments have to do more with less.

However, while I believe you have a right to be concerned about the state of sports in your area, all honest speaking nationals whether they are DLP, UWP, DFP or Pappy supporters will tell you that sports is DEAD throughout the island. When the Skerrit DLP became the government, they met cricket, Football and Netball going strong in Dominica. You could drive around the island any given Sunday and you would see young men and women playing sports as grounds were being maintained by the community and government. For example, they met a very strong northern district cricket league called “The Harris paint league”, which had every village from Dublanc to La Plaine covered and most games were on DBS. It was the vision of the late Nilian Marie of Vieille case, the village of the PM. It was that league that opened the door for players like Shane, Fernix Thomas, Sanford, and many more national and youth players. From the time Skerrit came in power, it died. Don’t tell me a rich man like Skerrit could not sponsor the league if he was interested in sports and the future of young people. Today, you could drive from Roseau to the North, South, East and West and one would be lucky to get 10 cricket grounds that are cricket ready during our cricket season. No wonder we not producing sportsmen anymore. That’s why change is a MUST and not something to even think about.

Oh please, an election gimmick. Vote for me and you will get the world.

We just just came off the Passion of Christ and the tempting. And this new attack brings me back to the First Sunday in Lent.

“All these I shall give you , if you would worship me.”

    Translate to the UWP

There will be no more sorrow, no more pain. It will be milk and honey all day and every day for the rest of our lives; if you only vote us in. Please!

Come on guys; you seem to forget, but thank God we do remember that you are still the same UWP. The name can be change, but that is all that have been changed. I mean after all these years in Opposition what have you done to make us want to give you a second chance? Nothing.

Your time in Opposition was badly spent all these years; your time to show us that you have learnt from your mistakes; but no that was not what you’ve done and now that elections are just I year away and the Government has been working to improve our lives, you believe by not acknowledging what we all know and by trying to degrade everyone and everything we will vote for you? It will not happen.

You will have another opportunity to redeem yourself and your party after this election and become a real opposition in parliament. No more people’s parliament and all that nonsense; be an opposition who works together with the government for the good of the country and the people and maybe, we will reconsider you.

But certainly not now. And please plan to respect the people decision, that too can determine you winning some more seats in the next 6 years.

Not Me Alone; for sure; you, me and the majority of Dominicans are devoted to Dominica, I hope. But I am surely not a worshipper. I do not worship human beings.

However, This Prime Minister, The Honourable Roosevelt Skeritt, we have to give the man his jacket. He has done very good things for Dominica and Dominicans. I mean just look around Dominica. You would be a fool if you cannot see what he has done for all of us. You have to be proud of him. I am very proud of him. I admire his devotion to Dominica and what he is doing for the people.

He is a genuine nice gentleman. He is a peoples’ person. He loves Dominicans and Dominicans love him right back. Those who do not love him are simply jealous and envious of him.

Anyone can tell that he is devoted to Dominica and he loves his job and he makes it look easy that is why the UWP wants to come in because, they cannot believe how easy he makes it look. But we all know it is very difficult to run a country like Dominica and therefore, we need competent people like the Prime Minister and the DLP back in office to continue what they have been doing.

We want no change; what we want and need is a continuation of the work that is being done by the people who know what have to be done and can do what have to be done.

The Prime Minister is giving Dominicans all he has and all he can give; just look around they entire country we have all benefitted from this Prime Minister and his Government and we want them back in office to continue taking us to the Next Level.

Yes, I love my PM. And I am very satisfied with the job he is doing. And if you call that worshiping that is your word not mine.

The demise of the sports field began when DFA came in and started digging the playing field without any plan and collaboration. The depth at which they dug caused govt to put a whole mountain side in the field. Then the deluge of April last year wreck havoc. I think when we criticize, we need to be truthful

The mistake the Skeritt led Government made was to put a woman who I understood never made any significant contribution to sports during her days as a young woman. I wondered whether she even played marble for knots, rounders or netball. This is another square peg in a round hole by the DLP Government. I hope very soon we will have the likes of people like Mr. Green or Mr. Lugay or Mr. Sprags John or Mr. Sanford or Mr. Isaac, son of MoesoPier of the famous Combermier Sports Club, in charge of the Ministry responsible for Sports.

@Johnny I think the key question is ‘What has the Labour Party done for the constituents over the past 14years’. The party to which you are a slave to, has been in power for 14years, IT’S NOT WHAT RON HAS DONE. STOP THE BLAME GAME. Stop shifting the goal post. Your party controls the country’s purse, for crying out loud.
As i said earlier, they are a lazy bunch of NO GOODS, that needs to be sent packing.
And if Ron can just talk about ‘ sports ‘, then he is dam very good. This is one of the biggest industries in the world. HE LOVES HIS PEOPLE, THAT IS WHY HE IS TALKING ABOUT SPORTS SO MUCH. Can we say the same thing about you and the cabalist that your worship? Surely Not!!!

      • April 22, 2014

Have you even been to la plaine? do you even know anything about la plaine? Did you know that during MR. Green’s reign as palrep & minster of Sports & education he only sent 2 students from the la plaine constituency to study abroad? one of which was his daughter? what else did he do? honestly? name me one thing. smh.

      • April 22, 2014

@%You are right. “STOP THE BLAME GAME and STOP SHIFTING THE GOAL POST.” RON was the Minister for Sports, he should have done BETTER for the SPORTS ARENA, ESPECIALLY for “his people”, THE PEOPLE OF LA PLAINE. He was too busy trying to condemn Roosevelt.

When was sports ever a top priority for any government in Dominica. Dem fellas were in there in it was the same nonsense. Bear in my that I am not condoning the non support of sports by any government because sports has and continue to change my life, but i find it deplorable when a former minister point out that the current representative has neglected sports when he as a Minister of Sports did not do much better. Enough with all this political bickering and let us come together and do something.

Facts are stubborn things. Please note a few: The first sports complex in La Plaine including Lighted Hard Court, Field, Seating Stands, a Pavilion, perimeter fence, parking lot etc was built and opened in May 1999 by whom? Minister Green and UWP. This facility was put into full use with Leagues in Basketball, Football, Rounders some cricket organized by whom? Parl Rep Green. Eleven years pass of DLP not one penny for maintenance. Who keep field going? La Plaine sportsmen and white visiting student groups. Sports flourishing. Who invite DFA to improve playing surface? Mr Green’s Premier Southeast Football Team. Why hasn’t field improvement been completed? Ask Pepper where de money go?
