Darren Sammy has formally notified the West Indies Cricket Board of his decision to retire from Test cricket. Sammy has also informed the Board of his decision to continue to make himself available for selection for the other formats of the game. Sammy, in his communication to the Board thanked the Directors, the Selectors and Team Management for the confidence shown in him as a player and captain which he served as from October 2010 to May 2014.
Sammy said that he will always cherish the memories of representing and captaining the West Indies in Test cricket.
The West Indies Cricket Board has thanked Sammy for his service to West Indies Test cricket both as player and captain and looks forward to his continued involvement and contribution as an ODI player and T20 captain and player.
Sammy played in 38 Tests, captaining in 30 of those appearances. He remains the West Indies T20 captain.
I agree. This longer version of the game takes its toll on the body. Plus, WI Team does not have enough players to rotate the team. The same players have to play all three versions of the game back to back.
It was Sir Frank Worrell who advised that if WI cricket was to remain on-top the WICBC should look to the small islands for talent; they took the advise an for a while we were on-top; but alas insularity continued to show it’s ugly head again an we hit rock-bottom. Thanks Sammy for your dedication an steadfastness. If you could speak out like Gayle an Samuel you would speak. Heaven knows you tried to heal the division that exists between the WI players.
Regardless of where the captain comes from, the failure of our cricketers to consistantly perform at a high level will continue to be the main draw back.Insularity is not new in WI cricket.
Your were a very exemplary captain..good luck
It’s sad to hear of his resignation, but after the captaincy was given to Ramdin, Sammy knew very well, that he would not earn a spot on the test team. So i think that the decision was the right one. He resigned first, knowing that he would not make it on a WI team of 11 players.
His test record is by no means impressive, but he had that fighting spirit unparalleled in WI cricket.
WISH YOU WELL SAMMY!!!!!
Bowling: 38 tests, 84 wickets , Best Bowling 7/66 Econ 2.90
Batting 38 tests, 1323 runs, Highest Score 106 Av 21.28
My bet on the next Windward Islander that will probably make it to the senior WI Test Team in the near future is SUNIL AMBRIS, wicket keeper/batsman from St Vincent if he maintains consistency.
The West Indies board does not seem to have any kind of tact. This is a man who literally rescued West Indies cricket when there was turmoil beyond imagination.
I agree that he should be dropped, but the manner in which it was done did not recognise the responsibility that was placed on his shoulders and the job he did of turning around a bunch of fighting misfits into a more disciplined force.
Sammy is not star on a test team. He was a good captain, but he no longer belongs on the team.
What I believe the board should have done is pull him aside and tell him what they had planned to do and give him a chance to resign and then they name Ramdin as captain a couple days later. That would have been the dignified thing to do. These guys just don’t get it and they never will.
I agree with the decision, but I do not support the method in which it was done.
Correction: should have been in-fighting misfits.
It is funny all this talk about WICB this and that and how they treated Sammy. I can call a name like Desmond Haynes that got the same treatment if not worst. Sammy’s pick was guaranteed simply because he was captain. He retired because he of persons knows that there are players out there that will play on the first XI before he does now that he is no longer captain, and it is not because of this usual BS about big Island, small Island it is because he has limitations where test cricket is concerned and his stats proves that. Good luck Sammy in the other formats of cricket.
Lara use to call players name to Represent the west indies team in different format. I never ever hear Sammy as captain call out names players like Liam Sebastien on a t20 odi Delroy Johnson nocking on the test team for years never consider Ramdin already calling out four Trinidadan as a cricket fan got no Smpathy for Sammy.
What the heck are you saying. Stupes!
knowing cricket history you will know what am talking about.
Knowing cricket history you will understand what am talking about Sammy him self Lara who call him out not never consider by selectors they said he was to slow to make it as a bowler Lara said he wants him.
You talking crap! That is what you talking CRAP
Are you insane? Did you say Liam Sebastien? How can you even mention Sebastien’s name when it comes to test cricket or any international cricket for that matter.
I watched Sebastien play and he is not of international calibre.
I must say DNO did me a favor a couple of years ago when I wrote a rather harsh critical post about Darren Sammy. I was not too happy that DNO did publish my post at the time; however, I must admit I have grown a bit since then and so has my appreciation for the former West Indies Test captain. Thank you Mr. Sammy for your dedication and service to West Indies cricket. The people of St. Lucia and all West Indians should commend the former skipper for making the most of his cricketing talents while wearing the maroon cap proudly.
Most of us have heard the saying “One man’s failure is another’s gain.” To me Sammy’s retirement put Mervin Matthew in a very good position. When Mervin played for the West Indies under 19 team for the 2004 youth world cup, Danish Ramdin was the then captain. Ramdin knows the man very well as it was Mervin Matthew along with Rampaul that spearheaded his attack. With Windies not having fast bowling depth this year, along with Mervin having had a very good year and Ramdin being captain, puts Mervin in a very good position to replace Sammy on the test team.
U think Ramdin makes selections?
lol keep dreaming.
Although Ramdin is not the only one picking the team but as captain he becomes part of the selection panel and captain’s usually get their man as seen with Sandford when Hooper was captain. Under Sammy Mervin would not even be considered because that sport was for Sammy. Are you guys upset Mervin in the question?
Too much politics in West Indies Cricket. Now the team has started to bounce back…others fighting for the top position. I have no
you could not have said it better politics and they see us as small island we never stand a chance with them ,any time some body from the small island rise they bring u right back down
“I wonder who is advising the West Indies Cricket board on the way they do things. West Indies cricket need to stop thinking of their bank accounts and start thinking of the fans. Sammy did nothing wrong to deserve this. He accepted the position when no other player wanted it and that how you say thanks?”
Have I missed something, was he forced out?.
I thought the headline said Sammy retired, so what is it he doesn’t deserve.
Good Luck Sammy, you represent.
Let me congratulate Sammy for a job very well done at the right time. When he was made captain, it was clear that we needed leadership and Sammy was the only one available. and he did a fabulous job. However, we have crossed that hurdle and leadership is no longer the issue but rather talent. At this time Sammy, who bats #8 and maybe 4th- 5th change bowler clearly shows he is not considered a frontline batsman or bowler on the team and therefore, replacing him with Ramdin was the right thing to do at this time. Sammy was smart enough to retire from test cricket because with the likes of Dwain Bravo, Pollard, Dwaine Smith, Jerome Taylor, Andre Russell, and even Mervin Matthew, who are all either genuine batters that can bowl or bowlers that can bat would really put Sammy in a difficult sport to compete for his test place. I like him in the T20 and 50 over game and should captain both shorter versions, but not the test team.
i wil sure miss samy eh stupes he is such a good player all the best my dear
Thank you Nanthan. Great accomplishment. I guess Shane is next.
I know. lmao

This article may help shed some light on the point of view of the poster.

They were gonna drop him. So he took in front. Inform yourself.
Dear NYC.
Sammy retired. West Indies Cricket Board did not kick him out nor did they do anything to him. He voluntarily retired.
If i could stop following and supporting West Indies cricket i would. But alas I am a die hard fan. All the best Sammy and thanks for leaving your heart on the field every time you went out for WI
