Shane Shillingford is back

Shane Shillingford underwent remedial work on his bowling action

Shane Shillingford will play in the Regional 4-Day Tournament this weekend, after undergoing remedial work on his bowling action.

The 31-year-old off-spinner is set to appear for third-placed Windward Islands, when they face leaders Jamaica in their fourth round match, starting on Friday at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.

“Obviously, I am extremely happy that I will be playing this weekend,” said Shillingford. “I have put in a lot of hard work over the past few months. It was a bit tough at first, but once the coaches told me what I had to do, I went straight to work. I just had to be really patient and I worked really hard.”

Shillingford underwent remedial work in Barbados under the guidance of former Barbados and West Indies fast bowler Vasbert Drakes with input from West Indies Head Coach Ottis Gibson.

“I am happy for the advice that I have received from the coaches, especially Vasbert, and I must also thank everyone for the support they have given me during this period,” he said.

Shillingford also underwent a biomechanical bowling analysis conducted by a research team at the University of Western Australia on March 4 in Perth.

“It’s great to have Shane playing first-class cricket again and I’m sure Windwards are delighted to have him back,” said WICB Director of Cricket Richard Pybus. “We look forward to getting the results of his re-test in Perth, so that he can re-start his international career.”

Shillingford had been reported for a suspect action after the second Test last November in India.

The International Cricket Council, the sport’s World governing body, then confirmed the illegality of the action after independent tests last December in Perth.

Shillingford has played 14 Tests for West Indies, grabbing 65 wickets at 32.32 apiece. He has never appeared in a One-day or Twenty20 International for the regional side.

He has played 66 R4D matches for the Windwards since his debut 13 years ago, capturing 289 wickets at 21.54 apiece.

Shillingford requires 11 more wickets to become only the second bowler to take 300 in the history of the modern R4D, which dates back to 1966.

Glad to have you back, Shane. No matter whom you play for I love to see you bowl so effectively – action or no action. I want them to go and test the action of all spin bowlers if they think their so called biomechanical analysis is so foolproof. To all those who are quick to believe negative things about others, I say, go get some backbone.

Shaney my boy, always remember God’s delay is not a denial. Once again, you believed in your God given ability to persevere against all odds and you have managed to bounce back from adversity. We are very elated to have you back representing the Windward Islands. You are certainly a proven difference maker. If I was a fly on the wall in the opposition dressing room, I would probably hear them saying how their chances have diminished greatly with your return. All the best to you and the team!!!

      Sabie,
We need to go beyond that. When we spot deficienciescies in the actions of young bowlers, we need to take action to correct it at the earliest opportunity.

I think the coaches and senior players did Shane a great disservice to have allowed him to bowl with that action throughout the years.

Sooner or later, they will be spotted and that can only serve to disrupt their careers when they are in full swing.

That should serve as a lesson.

Really ? This comment is so out of place. What Shayne need now is the support and motivation. Looking back at what c.f. old have been is counter advancement. Common guy take this comment elsewhere

Surely you know better than that. I do not blame Shane the his current predicament. The people who nurtured him over the years should have seen to it that his action was modified since he was a young boy.

Of course since he was successful bowling with that action, they did not want to tamper with his success, so they allowed him to do “what came naturally”.

It should have never come to that at that stage in his career.

Shane we will support you with even more intensity. I admire your fortitude and your die hard mentality. Not many player could stand up to this storm like you have done.
You have done great Shayne but if there is something that we as a people must take learn from your situation is your willingness to keep going even when you trip and fall. That to me is even more fascinating than your brilliance on the field. Kudos Kudos all the time – you are truly a hero and an example for the young people who are thinking of throwing in the Towel as soon as the going gets tough.

I am still a little confused. I really thought that he could not play for the regional team before the ICC declared his action LEGAL.
I know he is a fighter, and I WISH THE ICC declares his bowling action acceptable.

god help him,let him hunt seek and destroy their batting offence,a specially them indians, some of these indians are more racist than whites, they need to learn their place, with their idol worship levity,is nothing more than they could not read his bowling effects,so they blasted him,i bet we going to see the same bowling action.
