Shane Shillingford cleared for international cricket

West Indies off-spinner Shane Shillingford has been cleared to return to international cricket after agreeing not to bowl his doosra delivery.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has granted Shillingford a conditional pass to resume his 14-Test career, after undergoing bio-mechanical tests on his bowling action.

Shillingford will be able to bowl all of his repertoire of deliveries, except for the doosra, after it was deemed illegal by testing at the University of Western Australia in Perth.

The 31-year-old was reported for a suspected bowling action for the second time in his career during the Test series against India last November. A report from all four match officials highlighted specific concern with Shillingford’s doosra.

Shillingford was, however, unable to prove any of his deliveries were legitimate when he was first tested at UWA on November 29 last year.

The spinner was subsequently prevented from playing for West Indies while he underwent remedial work on his action.

That process has proved effective enough to allow Shillingford – who has 65 Test wickets – to return to West Indies after re-testing earlier this month cleared all-but his doosra.

“The International Cricket Council today confirmed that following remedial work, an independent test has found the bowling action of the West Indies bowler Shane Shillingford to be legal and the off-spinner can now resume bowling in international cricket,” a statement from the ICC read.

“Shillingford’s off-break and arm balls were re-tested at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in Perth on 4 March 2014, and the elbow extension measured for each of his deliveries was within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspected Illegal Bowling Actions.

“Shillingford has confirmed that he will no longer bowl the doosra. Therefore, his doosra will remain an illegal delivery and he cannot bowl it in international cricket.

“It is important to point out that under this process, as with all bowlers, Shillingford’s bowling action will continue to be scrutinised by match officials to ensure it remains legal.”

Shillingford will therefore be available for West Indies’ home three-Test series against New Zealand in June.

He will be under scrutiny? What does that mean? They mean under the scrutiny of Kettleborough. No umpire is going to want to be the one who let Shane Shillingford get away with it. There was never anything wrong with his bowling. ICC just did not want to say his umpires were wrong. Bowling can be corrected in a few months?

The icc is bias to small island cricket, look what Australia, England, india wanted to do take control of cricket governing body. The make shane go through all this restructure of his bowling action, but there are many bowlers out there that need to restructure their bowling action.I recently looked at dale styen in a 20/20 match against new Zealand, and this man is chucking the ball, but no body sees or says anything.

Why is it that Caribbean players are the ones who get this treatment and the ones from the other nations who obviously have similar bowling actions never seem to be under the same scrutiny? Good for you, Shane. I hope that you can get back into the squad and form a fearsome bowling trio with the other two spinners.

Shane is a study in perseverance, determination and hard work that we all must admire and emulate. Dominicans should be proud, he did not just disappear as some others would do.
Love you brother Shane, more love to you, you are proving that the powers that be cannot keep you down.
Is now they are in trouble, DOOSRA OR NO DOOSRA

just asking a pertinent question.OF the 65 test wickets that Shane has, how many victims fell to the Doorsra? IF most of his wickets fell to his guile and genuine off spin, then we know the orchestrators off his demise will soon find their day. Best of luck Shane, Make Dominica and the West Indies proud.

Happy for him, but being under scrutiny might have a negative effect on him. I hope he can bounce back.

Ahh, but he will be must less effective without the doosra.

      March 26, 2014

not necessarily. Doosra does not make you less effective it just means that he has to work harder on his other types of bowling and perfect them…. he can use this and also the fact that he got another chance to do what he loves as encouragement. “JUST SAYING”
