Should Luan run?

Luan on the tracks in London

Speculation abounds! Will she run? Should she run? These very simple questions captivate the thoughts of many if not all Dominicans tuned in to the happenings at these Olympic games.

Dominica’s darling, Luan Gabriel has to decide soon whether she will actually run in one of the many heats scheduled for Monday 5th August 2012. These heats will feature the fastest women on the planet. Amazingly Dominica’s Sprint princess and student of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School has been our nation’s choice to stand side by side with the best in the world. Whether she runs or not remains a question.

In the small fishing village of Bioche Dominica, much discussions and excitement fills the air. Some are excited to see the outcome if she does suit up, while others are extremely firm even adamant that she should stand by and watch. From every corner of Dominica the feelings are mixed. Some fear the prospect of a blowout others are extremely excited and proud of her. Those against her running argue that her participation might create a sense of doubt and possibly cause irreparable emotional and psychological damage. Exposing this national treasure would be a major mistake they claim. On the other hand there are those who feel a great sense of excitement and optimism. These feelings come from the confidence exuded by this young sprinter. Luan’s posture and confident nature makes one believe she can conquer the track they claim.

The fact that at 16years old we are debating whether or not this young phenom should actually run is a testament of the confidence afforded this young lady.

Both sides have legitimate concerns.

For Luan it must be very difficult. The pressure from outside of her must be quite unbearable. Every athlete likes to perform and judging from what we have seen from her she is no exception. The man tasked with working along with her, Coach Joel Hamilton must also be feeling the pinch. His task first and foremost is to ensure  Luan’s wellbeing. His responsibility is not just to ensure that she is cared for during the games, but to ensure that his decisions enhance her future.

Luan was chosen to go to the games by the Dominica Olympic Committee. The executive decided to go along with Miss Gabriel because she was the female athlete in the most competitive position at the time. Her time 11.9 in the 100meters may not produce a medal but according to General Secretary Thomas Dorsette “Luan would be running in the heats if she chose to do so”. He further stated that the Portsmouth Aspirers Club Sprinter would be matched up against athletes with similar times. It was his opinion that if she ran it would only be for the experience as the organization begins to prepare her for a potential medal run in Brazil in 2016. Dorsette also stated that if she was able to do her personal best then this would be bigger than a medal.

There is no bigger stage than what Luan is currently a part of. There are friends and acquaintances from other OECS countries, as well as competitors that she has run against from other countries. In the recently concluded World Junior Championship in Spain, Luan indicated that while she lost, she enjoyed the competition. The standard was high and she became more aware as to the adjustment needed to become a world power house.

One thing is certain a decision is needed as it must be terribly difficult to be in this position. It must be agonizing. This uncertainty can make the entire 2012 London Olympics a very sad and confusing place to be.

The experience of what goes on at an Olympic game and the hype surrounding it was the original intent. If experience is the greatest teacher, it’s important that the lesson of 2012 for this young athlete remains one of excitement and fun. The longer this decision lingers the less exciting it becomes. For her sake we should all encourage her to enjoy herself to the fullest. The wish of everyone from all corners of the globe and her homeland is for her to have fun.

There is precedent that would suggest she should run. Austin Sealy Carifta winners Pauline Davis Thompson and Debbie Ferguson McKenzie both Started their sprinting careers at age 16. Thompson competed in five Olympic games over a 20 year period while McKenzie is now in her fourth appearance. Sr. Writer Mr. Brent Stubbs for the Tribune in Nassau is of the view that Luan should run. He explained that from his standpoint, there was little to lose. He also indicated that this is a once in a life time opportunity and she can only gain from it. Mr. Stubbs also explained that no one can guarantee that all things will be in place as it is now in four years.

And if running is her most exhilarating moment I would be surprised if she did not run. In the end it may be the only thing that guarantees that she enjoys this most amazing summer.

Too young! 16 years! Don’t give me that crap! A 15 year old swimmer from Lithuania made olympic history for being the youngest athelete to win gold. You bunch of cheats, let Luan have her day!Stop using the girl to have your fun in London!

What the hell you mean she was sent to London to watch and gain experience? What is a better teacher than being actively involed? You can fool the people one time, but you can’t fool the people all of the time.Luan you have my support, but your team members must be honest.

Luan must run! I know that, her coach, would do anything to get to London. He knew from the start that he was fooling Dominicans. Why did they go to London in the first place? Apart from her carifta results, I always questioned why they were not giving the results of her races from the other countries. They knew that these results did not qualify Luan to participate in the Olympics, so they kept them back to pull wool over our eyes. Well, whoever did that made Dominica the laughing stock of the world. I am still in support of Luan, but I am disgusted with the people in her team who tried to get to the olympic games by using her as a pun.

If she was sent there to compete I see no reason why this discussion of whether she should compete or not should even be coming up! All this nonsense about psychological and emotional damage is just absurd. They had enough faith in her to send her in the first place… why all the doubt no?? Somebody has to win and somebody has to lose. This is the world stage, she has every right to be there. She works hard, she loves what she does, all she needs no is our support. And how do you all think she is going to feel when she sees this article on DNO?? come on… we have no faith in our people.. Reading this will only make her feel like she does not have support from her own country. She should just go out there, do her best and whatever happens, thats ok… at least she had the opportunity to take part in an OLYMPIC game… the people doubting her should put on their running shoes and do it themselves… stupessss

Please help me to understand. The country pays a ticket to send this young lady to England. Pay hotel for her to live, provide an opportunity of a lifetime for her to compete at this level, and learn. And now there is an argument about whether she should run? I am not an athlete and maybe someone who is better infomred can help me; so could someone please help me to understand!!

    The Olympic standard Qualifying time for the 200m is as follows; Women’s A = 23.10 Women’s B = 23.30

Luan’s personal best time as of April was 24.67 seconds, the new national record.

Unless she has better times that the above mentioned, it is not a matter of SHOULD she run, but CAN she…

Luan is running. She has already been registered from day one.

click on the link to see
    http://www.london2012.com/athlete/gabriel-luan-264905/

The DOC is feeling guilty because they knew Luan was not supposed to go to the Olympics, but however they tricked her in going after she competed at World Juniors in Spain. They needed her to go so that one of The DOC officials would be able to get a free trip in London. However for them not to look bad, they had to play it safe and say that Luan is going as an observer with the choice to compete. but Luan has already been registered to compete and will be competing in the Women’s 200m

If Luan is fit she must compete. Come 2016, things may be very different and she may not get this opportunity again e.g. injuries. Sprinters live in the moment and have to move with a sense of urgency. When the gun goes bang Luan must execute her race plan perfectly and don’t give a damn what others think or say. Let’s let the track do the talking.

A part of the article that made me really angry was people saying she’s too young. I just saw 16 year old Gabby Douglas win a gold medal for the USA. If she can do that why can’t Luan? age ain’t nothing but a number; for her to make it all the way to London to compete in the OLYMPICS, something that many of the naysayers will NEVER achieve in their lifetime, and not run would quite a travesty! SHE BETTER RUN!! My crosses long wid some dominicans eh. stupes! Luan, I would love to see you run on Monday.PROUD OF YOU!!

Just let the girl run and see what happens. She might just surprise everyone. If she stands on the side and watch , she is going to stand on the side and watch the next time. Stop sheltering the girl. See so many young men and women from other countries doing their thing (win or not) and here you all want Luan to sit on the side like a plastic doll.

    I think she can win and that the mindset Dominicans should have.Positive vibes, that what we have to surround her with.Her time is now!she is there she should give it a try.she don’t have to wait for the future, it my never come, but she have NOW;
Like Kevin Garnet would say:ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE; this is the OLIMPICS MAN,she is a winner already that’s what we have to build on.

Darwin: «Speculation abounds! Will she run? Should she run? These very simple questions captivate the thoughts of many if not all Dominicans tuned in to the happenings at these Olympic games.»

Honestly, Darwin, which Dominicans have you heard in such passionate debate on this topic? This is a non-issue in Dominica. If there is anyone debating this, it is the writer of the article and his associates.

Dominicans, are all behind seeing our colours on the track and will be heartbroken (not to mention pissed off) if someone decides «ok, is a joke we was making. Luan, doh run!» Ludicrous! Why all the effort to get to London? Why the expense? None of the arguments mentioned in the article are cogent enough to justify a no-show.

So, Darwin, if this article was intended to start a debate or gauge opinion on the idea of a no-show, you have been rebuffed.

    Preposterous idea!

all that debating of whether or not Luan should run just proves “a lack of confidentiality” and “faith” most dominicans have in the young lady. Win or lose, the most important lesson learnt is true sportmanship. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and the Olympic Committee and everyone else who are doubting should be thinking about how this can affect her POSITIVELY in her career. This is utter rubbish, that there is even a debate. If she doesn’t run she would have missed a tremendous opportunity to gauge her performance against the “established” runners:
    This to me will
    (1) provide her with the dive to work harder and smarter for brazil in 2016.
    (2) the lessons learned will provide her with a wealth of experience for future athletic and life Encounters.

To me it would be totally demoralizing to let this young talent come so close and seat out and look. The message this would send is that Luan we don’t think you are ready.

I really hope there is no debate and she participates in the heats. NO MATTER THE OUTCOME YoU ARE AND WILL FOREVER BE DOMINICA’s Gold Medal ATHLETE!

I haven’t even read this article. The headline was enough. If she wasn’t ready then why waste our money and send her? If she not injured, she runs. Simple. She is an athlete, she is at the Olympics, on our money too. Whether or not she wins is irrelevant to me. But she has to participate. That will show her what to expect next time, especially because she is young. We don’t expect her to win but the pride of her participation is enough.

i think its pure nonsense that they are debating weather or not luan gabriel sould run. Her age should not be a factor since she is not the youngest athlete to participate in the Olympics. She has the talent thats why she made it through the qualifying rounds into the olympics. If her coaches think that she is too young they should have thought of that before they wasted tax payers money training and preparing her. Winning would be fantastic but participating should be an honor, even if she does not win a medal she should be participating for the love of country

The way this is presented is not fair to Luan. It is not up to her wether she runs or not but the Olympic authorities in London. So far all we know is that she has not been confirmed. Please, don’t pin this on a vulnerable young lady, who did not pre-qualify for this event as our Olympic Committee well know. Don’t let them use you Luan!

    August 2, 2012

Personally, I do not see the purpose of the article. This is a no brainer, once in a lifetime opportunity that Luan should take by the horns and run with it. Comparing Luan to Pualine Davis and Debbie Ferguson? The ages were the same, but the performances can’t compare. Someone mentioned the 16 year old Gymnast, two different sports…Luan has a great opportunity and should run to get the Olympic experience to make her ready for 2016, if she indeed makes it to 2016. Nothing is guaranteed. Mr. Telemaque please right about something else. For example; A Day in the life of the Dominican Olympic Athletes. The article mentioned that the heats are seeded by performance coming in, not so…The heats are seeded randomly and she could run against the best or the worst in the field…She needs to run and in 2016, she will be a 2 time seasoned Olympian….

Foolishness…. Do you have any idea how excited those of us in the UK of Dominican descent are, at having a chance to wave the dominican flag this olympics?! So what if she doesn’t win? She’s there, which is more than most of us will ever achieve, and has the chance to be surrounded by excellence she wouldn’t ordinarily see first hand. Go Luan!

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the young lady. I understand the repercussions, however at the end of the day it for her self fulfillment.

America supports their 16 yr old gymnist, who seeks the overall individual gold medal.http://msn.foxsports.com/olympics/gymnastics/story/gabrielle-douglas-embraces-pressure-going-for-all-around-gold-080112/

This is confusing to me, I thought she was there to participate and that means run for her country. Personally I think it would be devastating to her if she didn’t run, after having gone all the way to London games. What will she tell her future kids, that I was too scared to run!
There r so many other who worked tirelessly to be in her position but didn’t make it, I say *Run Luan Run*

SHE SHOULD RUN. It would sadly defeat the point of traveling to London if she doesn’t. We are fully aware of the lack of resources and opportunities for our athletes to be as strong as those of the developed countries. However, participating in the Olympics is a step in the right direction and will be an accomplishment for her and the nation. It is those very little accomplishments that set the stage for major ones. RUN RUN RUN!

I say that it all depends on ones mental strength. I understand that she is confident but she is strong mentally. She will regret if she decides not to run unless she is not mentally strong. RUN LUAN RUN!!!!

Heats are a way of narrowing the field down to the best of the best. How do you suppose you can reduce a field of say 25 to 8, with other athletes who have similar times as your athlete. Take swimming for example: did you see the number of heats the performers had to participate in, in order to qualify for the finals? Can someone please educate me on why this young athlete should be exempt from heats and still be allowed to participate in the finals. This is the Olympics, and you have to prove your worth/capabilities/potential. This applies to all athletes.

    August 2, 2012

She should run! Expose herself to the potential of achieving bigger things.
She can only know how good she is when tested amongst the greatest. At the end of the day, whether she wins or not won’t be the real issue. The issue will be what did she do with the opportunity to be at the Olympics and represent her country?
To not run…would mean she didn’t try. To run would mean that she tested herself, pushed herself but most of all…exposed her potential to the world.
She could be discovered at the Olympics and be given the opportunity for bigger and brighter things.
I say run – nothing ventured, nothing gained. If you can’t chase your dreams on the biggest athletics stage in the world …then you shouldn’t be there…that’s the reality…opportunity is staring her in the face…once lost, it might never be regained!

“The fact that at 16years old we are debating whether or not this young phenom should actually run is a testament of the confidence afforded this young lady.” — No it’s not. The fact that we are debating this is shameful and a slap to the young woman. Athletes are bred to compete—and there is no reason she should not compete unless she is injured. Instead of worrying about her placement in the heats, we should be worried about the pride she brings by competing for us.
This article truly pisses me off, and these idiots who believe that her not running is best for her — you must not be athletes. In all my years of track and field, I wish I had the opportunity to compete for DA. This young child has that opportunity and we should not steal from her light by even suggesting that she doesn’t run.

    • August 2, 2012

Yes she has to make the decision since she was originally brought to the OLYMPICS as an OBSERVER,that’s what she was told and now that there is the opportunity to compete it is she who has to decide.
The age is not a factor her personal best compared to that of the others is the concern and whether she feels that she was prepared to compete. Every athlete wants to enter a competiton in the best position physically and mentally if you are not prepared for an event you as a seasoned athlete do not feel good. Then since Luan did not originally make it to the olympic to compete just maybe she isn’t mentally prepared.

In my opinion I think she should be allowed to run. While i agree that she will be running against some of the fastest in the world, i think it would be a good experience for her. What her coach has to do is let her know what she should expect, what she will be coming up against and the possible outcome. she should just prepare herself mentally and psychologically that she stand a chance of winning or losing. but win or lose she should take it as a learning experience and try to build up herself. As stated in the article who knows what the next four years might hold. I say go Luan.

Let the girl run! None of our other athletes in the past have made it very far anyway, so what’s the big fuss about her losing. We don’t expect much from her now, but certainly just being there and competing should be good for her and get her exposed to what is expected of her in the future. I just can’t possibly understand the rationale of anyone who would suggest otherwise.

I don’t believe much is gained by sitting on the sidelines…if her best time meets the Olympics qualifying standard she should run…that is how experience is gained, and she needs it to prepare for the future. She should run and run to win not to see how well she does…to win, so she gives it everything she has. Her coach and whoever else advises her should help her with the mental preparation and management both before and after the race…so there is no disappoinment or thought of failure…if she does not move to the next round. Enusre that she gains from the experience.

Mr. Telemaque, you know as well as I that the Dominica Olympic Committe is entirely to blame for putting Luan in such predicament. The fact is she is not qualified to run in the 200 mt., not even under the lower Olympic standard. Why are the Committee now trying to “persuade” the officials to let her take part? Any attempt with our brand of “cajoling” will have the opposite effect I’m afraid. Age and gender do not come into it. The Chinese 16 yr. old female swimmer, who won a gold medal was qualified and the same rules should apply to all athletes., regardless of background or origin. Anything else makes us, and especially Luan a figure of ridicule and pity. If we are sincere in our beliefs that we are a proud nation we should be judged on merit only. My heart goes out to Luan. She deserves better than this.

In the inevitable future when we grow old and most of our personal exploits, joys and sorrows fade away, IT WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED IN THE ANNALS OF HISTORY THAT DOMINICA WENT TO THE OLYMPICS AND DID NOT RUN BECAUSE OF FEAR!!!!!!!!! Come on this is not what we signed up for!! Luan must be under tremendous pressure from others that may be unwarranted. The point is, she and all of us should take it for what it is A GAME TO BE ENJOYED. So what if she does not win or even get a medal or possibly come out last???? It’s ok!!! The point is she was chosen from 60,000 persons living in Domiica of which 90% of us can’t even run to save our lives. I know I can’t .

Luan please run!!!!!!! You are one or part of the less than 1% of the world’s population who can consider yourself the elite, part of the knights of the round table. You may not be king Arther but by God you are in Camelot!!!!! Get up and fight or die trying! Enjoy it! Savor it for it will never return. It will be ok!!

A very interesting article that captured the mental and psycological depths of the urgency associated with participating and winning at games such as the Olympics or just representing ones country respectfully and with pride while enjoying the moment. The article may have fallen just abit short in putting in true perspective the dilemna associated with her best times juxtaposed by the worlds 100m phenoms.
For now she is our World phenom and we are proud of her. SHE SHOULD RUN AND REPRESENT. EVEN BIGGER TIMES AND OPPORTUNITIES WILL COME.

Failure teaches many great lessons. I say yes for her to run and quickly come to terms with the realities of being an athlete at the Olympics level. There can only be one winner.

I know that there may be concern regarding Luan, instead we should be behind them to build both of their confidence. I had the opportunity to meet them at there training sessions. They would probably feel like that due to the fact that that they are seeing other athletes who are much better and faster than them with more experienced training coaches, psychologist to help them build their confidence.
I like to say that the government need to invest properly in our athletes in other to get results. It’s not just to represent the country but to get results as well, this is a very good feeling to win a medal. This would also give Dominica the rcognition it deserves.

    • commentator
      August 2, 2012

Although I agree with you that more investment ought to be made in sport (I assume that you are referring to track and field), what is important is to support the athletes so that they can concentrate on winning. I remember speaking to Norbert Phillip on his day job at the tobacco factory and wondering if that was the best place for him to earn a living whilst playing his cricket. We must also find some way to make sport financialy rewarding for them both during and after their career has come to an end, and let us not forget just how fragile an athlete’s career can be. With that in place there will be many more reps of Dominica in Rio and no nonesense about not being good enough.
