Sports Division host schools Table Tennis District Festival

The Sports Division will be hosting the 2017 Primary Schools Table Tennis District Festivals over a two-day period – Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th.

Over the years, the participation has grown tremendously as a direct result of the standardize PE programme at the Primary Schools.

As a result, during the last annual table tennis championships, which took place in February, it was impossible to accommodate all the entries over the two-day period. This resulted in the team events being cancelled and the open singles being played on a straight knock-out.

This year, in order to give the students sufficient amount of playing opportunities, the District festivals are being introduced in which the schools will compete in the team events using the ABC-XYZ system.

The competition will be hosted at nine (9) venues and with the teams divided in ten (10) districts; 31 boys and 26 girls teams are registered to compete from thirty-one (31) Primary Schools.

The events will take place from 11:00 am and amongst the venues to be used are the Goodwill Primary School, Mahaut Community Centre, Jones Beaupierre Primary School, Roosevelt Douglas Primary School and the W.S. Stevens Primary School.

I would advise the sports division to first teach the students how to play the sport before just throwing down a festival on the student!!!! It may be that this sport is in just a few schools but the area where I teach hardly any of the schools have had any practice in table tennis. The time table is already so jam packed with all kinds of this and that, plus the school is stretched to half past three and there is no time for extra curricular because we have numeracy problems, literacy problems, behavioural problems, low staff morale, lack or proper pay so how we finding the time to teach the students table tennis?

@teacherofsports why don’t you address those concerns with the Sports Division? I am sure there was a roll-out of teh program where the sports was introduced to the teachers, equipment was made available and plans for the program implementation was presented. If that wasn’t the case, please contact the Sports Division. If you as a teacher is not encouraged, how can you encourage and motivate the kids. “Mens sana in corpore sano; sports can go a long way in teaching.

…..hope the table tennis will go to the next level through working with the tennis association, and the association with the Olympic Committee, otherwise those festivals will not mature into good fruits.
