Di Silvestri is representing Dominica at the games

Dominica’s hope of winning a medal at the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia was dashed when the skier representing the island failed to finish the race he was competing in.

Gary di Silvestri was among 89 skiers participating in the 15 km classic on day seven of the games on Friday.

He was among four competitors who did not finish.

Switzerland’s skier Dario Cologna won gold, Sweden’s Johan Olsson took silver and Swedish Daniel Richardsson won bronze.

On the official results posted on the Olympic’s website, Di Silvestri was listed as DNF or Did Not Finish.

Meanwhile Di Silvestri’s wife, who is representing Dominica in the 10 km women classic, did not even start that race on Thursday.

The Olympic’s website listed her as ‘DNS’ or Did Not Start.

In that race the gold went to Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland, silver went to Charlotte Kalla of Sweden and bronze to Therese Joyaug of Norway.

It is amazing how we who believe that we are free thinkers aren’t really. Can someone point out how has this affected Dominica negatively? We are so caught up in our politics and who we support that we can’t even see things objectively anymore. We are so desperate that we will hurt others to make ourselves look good. The day is coming when some of us will remain speechless when the masses will have spoken. I hope then that we will give Dominica a chance. I know that the negative people here are in the minority. You can even call their names for they are on the talk shows everyday or blogging here.

The negative comments which flow from the story of Dominica’s participation in the Winter Olympics in Sochi should not surprise anyone, as by and large, those who post comments on the internet see it as a platform to criticism the government and in particular Prime Minister Skerritt, even where the story has nothing to do with the government.

We all recall the 2012 London Olympics. Dominica was represented by Luan Gabriel and Erison Hurtault who is described as “an American athelete” with Dominican parentage. Dominica Olympic Committee President Felix Wilson and Treasurer Thomas Dorsette led the Dominica squad of 2 participant, both of whom were eliminated in the first round. This time the same DOC President Wilson goes to Sochi on the backs of the di Silvestris. Mrs di Silvestri did not start her race (DNS) and Mr. di Silvestri did not finish (DNF). Why are we engaging in an orgy of “is Skerrit dat do dat” instead of asking DOC President Felix Wilson and the DOC itself an explanation?

How many of us know about the work that they have been doing and why is it a secret. Don’t we have a right to know what exactly thst they have been supporting in Dominica?

What exactly are DOMINICANS supposed to be thankful for? Those of you are who so hell bent out shape and yapping incessantly should really read about these fraudsters. These people did this to fulfill a lifelong yearning, and somebody in Dominica needs to answer how that came to be. Not even Cayman island nor Turks gave them citizenship. Where is the modern childrens’ hospital they built? If this wasn’t about Olympics none of you would have even known these two characters existed, but you all are defending. ROSEAU, Dominica (CMC) – Dominica will join Caribbean neighbour Jamaica at next month’s Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Media reports state that a husband-wife ski team will represent Dominica at the 2014 Games scheduled from February 7 to 27.

The Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC) is expected to confirm the island’s participation and participants this week.

United States-based Gary di Silvestri and his Italian-born wife Angelica Morrone di Silvestri have confirmed that they will represent Dominica at the Games.

They both met qualifying standards late in the game — he on the slopes of Montana and she a couple of days later far away in Maine last weekend.

They have been told that they represent the first husband-wife team ever competing in the same Olympics event — Gary in the men’s 15-kilometre classical race and Angelica in the women’s 10-kilometre classical race.

The di Silvestris gained Dominican citizenship through their philanthropic activities in Dominica and other Caribbean islands.

“We got involved with the country through philanthropic activities,” said di Silvestri, who lists Dominica as their primary residence, “and that’s how we ended up being offered citizenship, a kind of a thank you.”

Gary di Silvestri has USA, Italian and Dominica citizenship. His wife is a citizen of Italy and Dominica.

When the International Olympic Committee contacted Dominica, which has never entered an athlete in the Winter Olympics, about possible participation at Sochi, the di Silvestris were recommended.

They had been on the competitive skiing circuit for many years and attended ski camps in Oregon since 2005.

“They contacted us in November and we’ve basically had two months to do what people do in two years,” said di Silverstri. “It’s been a full-time job and we’ve been travelling to every venue possible to enter events where we could meet qualifying times in order to be in the Olympics.

“It has been an exhaustive and draining pursuit, but we finally made it. It took awhile to sink in, but it’s a great feeling.”

He said the people of Dominica have grown close to his family’s heart.

“They are a warm and welcoming people,” said di Silvestri. “They haven’t been spoiled by tourism and it’s a self-sufficient island. We certainly have an emotional attachment to the country.”

They have an emotional attachment to Dominica but never returned since they left 7yrs ago.

There’s plenty about the Winter Olympics to make a guy root for global warming: the so-called “Olympic tourists,” for example. That’s a tag applied to folks who have enough money and leisure time to make up for whatever talent deficiency kept them from competing for their real home country in the Games, and end up representing a nation that has no good reason even to have a Winter Olympic squad.

Gary di Silvestri has gotten as much attention as any member of the latest-model Cool Runnings imitators. Last week, The New York Times wrote about di Silvestri’s journey from his native Staten Island to a Caribbean island called Dominica. Di Silvestri, 47, and his Italian-born wife, Angelica Morrone, constitute the entire Olympic delegation for the nation of 70,000 mostly slave descendants in the Lesser Antilles, best known until now for having the world’s second largest hot spring. Di Silvestri and his wife are the oldest cross-country skiers competing in Sochi.

According to legal filings from places where the sun is a little warmer, the couple likes to skate, too.

Skate on seven-figure tax bills, that is.

Prosecutors in another tropical playground have linked the pair to a massive tax-fraud case related to the sale of Emerald Cay, a mansion di Silvestri and Morrone built on their own island in the Turks and Caicos Islands, an archipelago located 575 miles south of Miami. A sales brochure says the skiers’, um, house features “30,000 square feet of sophisticated interiors” plus “45-foot-high cypress ceilings,” a three-story library, a 6,000-bottle wine cellar, two “adjoining swimming pools with a waterfall,” a boat house, a guest house, a caretaker’s home, and “two private beaches.” The estate is automobile-accessible via “a remote-controlled swing bridge and a Turkish marble driveway.”

Gary di Silvestri will be competing along with his wife, Angelica. Both visited Dominica about seven years ago and did philanthropic work on the island. For their work the Silvestris were given Dominican citizenship as a token of gratitude.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_di_Silvestri). He and his wife visited Dominica on a philanthropic trip in 2006, to help fund a children’s hospital. They enjoyed spending time on the island and Dominica offered them citizenship. They accepted and in November 2012 they were approached to represent Dominica at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. “They knew us, called us and said, ‘Guys, we want you to represent Dominica if you think you can qualify’. At first we were hesitant, going from a hobby to a full-time commitment. We said, ‘What the hell. It’s an opportunity. We’ll take it’.” (olympictalk.nbcsports.com, 23 Jan 2014) (http://www.sochi2014.com/en/athlete-gary-di-silvestri)
I have yet to hear a country offered anyone citizenship as a token of their appreciation ????????? where is the children hospital?????? they have never returned to Dominica after they left 7yrs ago.

I am not so foolish to think that some millionaires came to Dominica and those corrupt son of guns just gave them a passport free of charge.
Now note if these people got their passports almost 7 years ago where we’re they during the last winter Olympics? They were much younger then. I guess they were too busy building the children’s hospital.
These people have money and where money talk grovelers will walk. We can say that yes our flag was at the Olympics but through insincerity.
I will never forget Merlyn Hartey represented an African country in a summer Olympic and she had done so because she tried to bully her way on to th Jamaican team after she had not made the team. Well guess what her story brought more negative attention to that African country.

I heard Gisel on Mat show referring to a website ‘deadspin.com’ saying that the people attempted to evade Stamp Duties after selling their island with a luxury house in the TCI to a man name Timothy Blexseth. Well people hear this i went on to the site and i decided to follow the story further as an investigative journalist that i am and realize that this wbsite is what it said it is a DEAD SPIN!!!

The people were never implicated in any case in the TCI pertaining to TAX EVASION. Now my good people google the name TIMOTHY BLEXSETH and you will see who was indicted to evading the tax, read the decision of the court and you will see that no one else but Timothy was asked to pay almost $8m to the TCI and who is owing the state of Montana $57m for tax evasion, you will also read that this Timothy man was once a multi- billionaire and lost everything after his divorce. He also took our star athletes to Court claiming they were responsible for paying the Stamp Duty and lost the case!!!!!!

Gisel am not sure what your motive is but you need to dig deeper, everything negative don’t always exist here in my nature isle… and for MAT to say someone must have gotten paid!!!!! Read for yourselves.

Check Deadspin.com Interesting write up about the Di Slyvestre, who is representing Dominica in Sochi Winter Olympics.

Read!!! Read!!!! Article headlined: Do Dominica’s adorable Skiers Deserve a Gold medal in Tax Dodging? by Dave Mc. Kenna, a Writer in Washington DC.

Di Sylvestre and his wife were representing themselves. What Dominica that? The two local DOC fellas didn’t care who were those people. No due diligence. They agree for di Sylvestre to form a Dominica Skiing Association in less than no time. The husband is self-proclaimed President.

Dominicans how often, how long will you allow yourselves to be fooled by those selling our passports and those buying, without we know what’s going on? There are numerous facts to prove of the scams and fraud some are involved in. They just want our passports, Dominican citizenship, as decoy, as cover. Those people are laughing at Dominicans. Where is the investment? Where is the child hospital? how much did he pay for the passport? Who did he pay? Where is the money?

As time goes on, expect more and more freaky news about passport sales and who receive them?

What is wrong with that? There is such a thing as artificial snow. When snow does not fall and sufficiently as expected, artificial snow is created for the ski slopes.
If the real snow does not fall, management of those ski resorts and slopes even expect the government to reimburse them a certain amount for loss of business.
My point here is, Dominica could have a ski slope in an appropriate area with artificial snow. Nothing is impossible.

When does a person or Person(S) not finishing a race makes it imperative that another leader should be elected. Come on please respect the masses! Always looking for faults is a disgruntled person who thinks that everything is political and that is you and the others you purport to represent Mr Steven Charles. The electorate will choose who they want to lead the country and you and some others need to respect the wishes of the people. By no means do I say whom you must vote but by all means, you need to respect the majority who casted their ballot and be a Dominican until the next election time. Time for persons like yourself to be in action developing your country even if you did not vote the DLP though whilst supporting your party. Too much talk will bring us nowhere.

It’s touching how much we needed to believe the farcical hokum that two people described as “rich” in the international press, could drive up tourism just by showing up in Soochi, Russia, with miniature Dominica flags on their costumes and flying a Dominica flag! Were they really representing Dominica and the People of Dominica? For one thing, they don’t look or sound like the average Dominican. For another, they’ve been very evasive about their “philanthropy.” It even now includes a new Phantom Children’s Hospital. So far, whilst the silence from the local authorities has been deafening, our “Olympians” have caught the attention of the international press. They’ve been described in the Washington Post as “Olympic Carpetbaggers” and in the New York Times, by an Olympics historian nonetheless, as “classic Olympic tourists.” But to improvise on the old idiom, “money talks and cacca beff walks.”

    • Freethinker
      February 14, 2014

I agree with you about over-optism regarding increases in tourism, but this whole thing about not “looking” like the average Dominican must stop. Should Olympic competitors all “look” like the idea people have from elsewhere about what a certain country’s inhabitants are? Should England only have white people on its team? Should all African teams be all black, despite the fact that England and Africa are very much multi-racial and multi-ethnic? Dominica contains people from all over and anyone who is eligible to compete should be allowed to compete based on skill, not appearance. I will concede that I do not know how honestly, at present, these two got their passports, but at least give them a break about their being white. Jah, man. Acting like we don’t have Dominican-Americans.

Of course, Britain is not exclusively white and there are athletes from all shades of the rainbow representing the country – their country! They are recognised as British without question.
With the best will in the world, the same cannot be said of our “adopted” Olympic skiers. Why otherwise would the world press pick up on that?

    • Malgraysa

      Grammatical errors? I see at least three glaring ones in your blog;
      – “have we win” should read “have we won”
      – “those who tried too” should read “those who tried to”
      – “fingers seem to make to much noise” should read “fingers seem to make too much noise”
And I’m not even talking about things like starting new sentence with a capital or structure. Shall I go on?

      February 14, 2014

Hard luck! There is more at stake than you see. This is not acceptable. So who should try what next. The govt needs to make a public statement about this.

This is no representation but manipulation and exploitation.

Thank them at least they represented our flag, our country, That’s a start in my opinion.

    • JoJo
      February 14, 2014

Yes thanks for making our country look ridiculous. Still, we all let you do it. You are Dominicans too, not so?

      • me
        February 14, 2014

I agree. What does that type of representation say about us? The sister islands Olympic committees eg Barbados , were not impressed. Dominicans need to know how this happened.

I agree. You know what gets me, they have Dominican passports.

      February 14, 2014

I think they have done more harm than good. It looks like an ego trip. What is the truth of their acquiring citizenship? children’s hospital my foot. The DOC have questions to answer.

    February 14, 2014

So what are we getting to represent us REGECTS ?? People that cant get in to represent there birth country at Olympics coming in to us and ask DOMINICA for a free ride in.. THIS IS CRAZY.. lol

    • me
      February 14, 2014

And to give some bogus sounding story trying to explain how they got citizenship. The government should clear the air as well the DOC should give a full account of how this happened. This seems to somehow compromise the integrity of the Olympics.

    February 14, 2014

You forgot to mention that the other competitor, Mr. di Sivestri’s wife did not even show up for her race the day before.
Any comment from the Dominica Olympic Committee or the even more laughable Dominica Ski Federation?
A long way to go and to spend a lot money for nothing Felix. That money would have been better spent on developing our young athletes at home.

All officials involved owe the public an explanation. De Sal said the DOC KNEW of them and came looking????????? Dominica is getting some bad press internationally.

      • Remix
        February 14, 2014

All you really expect Wilson and Dorsette to give an explanation? Remember how they bullied Luanne and our boys in London? They never took anybody on then.

    • BEB
      February 14, 2014

Are u saying that we in DA have a “Dominica Ski Federation” when all we know is rain, more rain , sun and more sun? That’s ridiculous

Another one over one the people. Where are the JOURNALISTS to ask the questions?

      • JoJo
        February 14, 2014

Journalists, we have journalists?. Matt just listening to Carlisle about motorbike missing from Morne Bruce to fill radio time before his next sponsor’s advertising and all the others must not upset the Govt. only Angelo not afraid to tell it as it is now.

      • Remix
        February 14, 2014

The last time the journalists asked DOC questions, it did not end well. It will not end well again!

        February 14, 2014

Re: journalists on the radio. Angelo has a lot of courage. I listened to him recently and he seems to be fearless. I’m not DLP or UWP. I’m Dominican. I’m not living in DA. I’m an independent thinker and not influenced by anyone.

    • DumbandDumber
      February 14, 2014

Don’t cry. DA got plenty money from them. Just hope DA uses it wisely.
