The members of the Dominica Athletic team were on Friday on their way back home, after being grounded in Trinidad on their way to the CAC Juniors in El Salvador.

According to reports reaching DNO the team left the island on Thursday (June 28) via Barbados to Trinidad and Tobago, Panama and then El Salvador.

However on arrival in Port of Spain it was discovered that only Carifta Games gold medalist Luan Gabriel had the required documents to travel to El Salvador.

An official of the athletics community here told DNO that several inquiries to Dominica on the matter were made, and attempts were made to have Luan travel with the Trinidad contingent, but that did not bear fruit.

The unscheduled Trinidad stopover meant  the team had difficulty finding proper accommodation.

The team was at lunch time on Friday in Barbados and expected to arrive in Dominica at 2:00 pm on LIAT Flight 364.

DNO is following this story and will provide more information.

That’s the result of selfishness and self-centeredness and everybody paid the price. Nabi and his company were too busy and too involved in seeing that Mr. Pacquette didn’t accompany the team that he didn’t care to use his knowledge and experience to help the team; but it backfired. Bondie ce pas un police!

Hosting team to come back and feed it to the media and your followers seems professional. Either you do bill who is responsible or put up and shut up.

    Nabi is a dramatic individual who lacks the level of professionalism for one who is educated;
He is using the media and those who do no individual thinking but fed informatio to jump and snap while pursuing his agenda.

I am disappointed in DNO you have downgraded from news to a gossip channel.

Why do you keep blaming NABI for the mishap and outright INCOMPETENCE of YOU and your team. You can change handles a million times, however you say the same thing and your anger is misdirected. What about the low morale amongst the athletes after having been so humiliated? what about the accountablity of the association and those of you who failed to dot every I and cross every T? blaming Nabi or anyone else will not cut it. Take responsibility and since the person at the helm is clearly incapable of handling diplomacy and management level activities may I warmly suggest they RESIGN?

 I HAVE NO TEAM AND ON NO TEAM. you all MUST LEARN TO EXERCISE SOME FORM OF SELF RESTRAINT.

YOU DO NOT CATCH FLIES WITH VINEGAR.

You all are accusing someone now – Who I am not. I know NABI and I am not his friend and he does not know me – you could explain me away and he will still not know me. The guy could have gone about this in a professional manner – he could have gained my respect(not that he cares)and that of others – he downright disrespects himself the way he behaves or should I say the way he goes about it.

CALM DOWN NABI CALM DOWN and ASPIRERS COACH ALSO- too much drama. I will stand by what I said – You do not gain respect through reproach and bragging. If his heart was in the right place – I would not have read it here or the “DID YOU KNOW” post back then.

CLARK KENT did he ever say he was SUPERMAN?

Are you serious with this comment?? You are attacking an individual who came to the aid of others when stranded. Who ever you are this shows that you are filled with much HATE for Nabi. Why would you down play this kind gesture? There is no reasoning with you on this one. My advice is to make room for LOVE to enter your heart because you are filled with too much HATE.

      • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1 Anonymous July 2, 2012

No hate for NABI – JUST that he needs to be a professional. I am not his friend and do not know him personally – just that he needs to exercise some level of self restraint.

      • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0 Disguise July 3, 2012

@En Ba La you keep repeating that you not Nabi friend yet you seem to be taking a personal interest in him. You stated he could have gained your respect (not that he cares) which seem to suggest that he caused you some hurt in the past and now you have a bone to pick with him. Start with yourself exercising some self restraint and remove the disguise outfit. Athletes lost the opportunity to represent their country at a major junior competition and instead you speak to that you busy attacking a man for stating he assisted DOMINICANS who were stranded. Nabi is not no SUPERMAN so he can’t stay quiet like CLARK KENT. Go make peace with what is bothering you instead of making yourself out to be a fool with your out of timing comments.

I have said it before, having Mrs. Charles as a sports Minister is a diaster. The woman doesn,t appear to know anything about what is happening in sports wether it is in Dominica or the rest of the world.I say this is because, apart from reading a written speech during the opening of a game, you never hear her voice on sports again. The palrep of St.Joseph is young and is involved in major sports as a player, why isn’t he the Minister of sports. This is truely a square peg in a round hole.

Speaking from experience. There is no visa requirement to enter San Salvador entering through using COPA which it seems the team did. If they were all continuing from San Sal to Barcelona and did not go through the process to gets visas for Spain, then that is the problem. There are alot of requirements asked for by the Embassy for Spain in Trinidad, we had alot of problems … believe me. If the DAA did not have the where with all to deal with the visa issue, the could have easily got in touch with fellow AA who had athletes travelling to Spain. Firstly the IAAF was at fault with the dates for insurance coverage … if there were athletes going to pre games camp … that was another issue … you needed additional insurance even though the IAAF or the Spanish AA said that they didn’t need it. The Embassy did not accept words, they wanted proof. For the years Ive been doing visas for athletes, this has been the worst, and it started with the IAAF and the Spanish AA. Governments had no control, nor Foreign Affairs ministries. The Spain Embassy laid out the rules and you had to follow them, and it took us almost one month to get our visas. Dominica, next time, reach out there are many of us in the region who can assist … just ask.

what an atrocity.. an embarrassment.. what an utter shame for Dominica as a whole.. trinidadians and the world at large who are reading this must see Dominicans as laughing stock.. that is just kindergarten material to know that you should check a country’s requirement for travel before you book flights to travel. even the travel agent should be able to confirm this if unsure. To be given such an opportunity to represent Dominica and not be be prepared for it is such a waste. Not only have the country lost money on travel tickets, but the embarrassment and failed opportunity for young people to progress in sports internationally is also an expense incurred. The one who caused the blunder should do the humble thing and apologise and resign! Shameful

Interesting development. In May 2012 I travelled to Belize via Panama and El Salvador. I was not required to have a visa to enter either Panama and or El Salvador. However, the airline on which i travelled from Panama to El Salvador, TACA Airlines, mistook me for a national of the Dominican Republic, but I asked them to take a second look at my COMMONWEALTH OF DOMINICA passport, and, then I was free to go. That being said, I was search, without cause, in the departure lounge, and, afterwards, I was informed that this was a routine search. Five minutes after being searched, the same officers, did the same thing to an American citizen sitting not to far from me. I wasn’t aware that Dominicans needed visas to fly to either Panama and or El Salvador. I however believe Dominican Republicans need visas to travel to those countries. Could this matter be a matter of mistaken national identity???

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0 William June 29, 2012

On second thought, why should Dominicans be required to have visa to travel to either Panama and or El Salvador.

And if in fact they do need visas, why didn’t the Ministry responsible for Sports, the Sports Division, and or the Dominica Amateur Athletics Association, or the body responsible for travel arrangements ensure that all the participants travel documents were iin order before they travelled. This is indeed a shame and embarassment for the athletes and for the country.

My other concern is whether or not Dominica has diplomatic relations with Panama and or El Salvador??? Prime Minister Skerrit, pls look into establishing diplomatic relations with those countries. Put that on your 2012 – 2013 agenda…

Once again DNO has failed to get the full story and is quick to just post beff. From the communication received from the officials of the CAC games the DAAA was informed that the only people requiring visas would be those travelling via the USA. The DAAA always ensures that proper travel documents are in place for athletes. This incident was not the fault of the DAAA.

In addition, Luan did not have the proper travel documents either. She has a Shenghen visa for the World Junior Championships carded for Barcelona Spain.

Can we please stop making this a personal issue and get down to the facts of the situation?

The Labor Party Government headed by Rosevelt Skerrit and El Salvador Government are brothers in ALBA,therefore, where is the problem.I am sure had it been El Salvadorian athletes who had arrived in Dominica without proper documents, someone would find Skerrit, regardless to where in the world he is,in an effort to allow the athletes to enter Dominica. Why didn’t they call Skerrit and save our athletes that embarrassment. Wasn’t it the same El Salvador who with Dominica resently signed a communique to throw out American employees of USAID.

It becomes an issue when such incidents take place at the level it has in this case. We are more embarrassed than angry. However the very work ethics and attitudes that led to such an incident permeates Dominica work/service culture every day at every level. We accept it as the norm(our way of life) and even resent those who call it out and try to effect change.

So unless we the citizenry of Dominica accept our short comings as employees and service providers; and make an honest commitment to change…incidents such as these will continue to occur.

How can you have athletes(Ambassadors) traveling and Sports officials failed to seek the proper traveling documents? This is beyond ridiculous. This is a sad reflection of how things are done in Dominica. Denying young athletes from displaying their talents on the world stage. These stages are set for endless opportunities. How sad, How humiliating.

There is a Ministry of Foreign Affairs who would ensure that the proper documents are obtained by the athletes.

This is a very big embarrassment and an example should be made of the officials involved.

My dear Remember your statement…Please get your stroy straight….Cause Time Will Surely Tell…. All the Time Luan was traveling to Trinidad to attend meets and she exceled did DNO put it up? NO!! ANd If Luan Had her Visa for the Barcelona Games Only Why did they call and find out if is to let her go ahead with any one to accompany her… Yes her Visa was truly for Barcelona Games but she could use it to go to El Salvado… thats why at the airport in Trinidad they say she could go…. And what you talking about Banwagon of Hate… We all jump on Banwagon of hate of our Choice… we dont have to look at any one in this situation we have to Look and how professional the individuals of the organisation are first…. I Personal have nothing against the Association neither Nabi… I am Just Saying… Stupes… you ppl always know whos hating and who not and never looking at the HARD FACTS!!

You are not informed otherwise you would have given us all the information. Who else should be blamed if not the DAAA? I see your hatred for the coach who took the young lady so far shinning through because he called you and your friends out for the foolishness you’ve done. Now the little resources available have been wasted all because one of you wanted “my trip this time” Shame on you, shame!

If you have the information, please give it to us. Who is responsible for picking the team: DAAA
Who is responsible for selecting the coaches: DAAA
Who is responsible for making sure that everyone selected has the proper documents to travel ie valid passport, visa if needed, etc: The DAAA.

So this is not about jumping on any wagon, it is about the blatant failure to carry out a simple task to ensure that our young athletes get the best experience necessary and represent the country at a high standard. This is not about Luan, this is about a team of some very disappointed youngsters who were as far as I am concerned, travelling to their Olympics, and were told sorry we have to send you home because some idiot did not get the proper travel documents necessary to have the team travel to the host country.

      Unacceptable

How can it not be placed at the doorstep of the authorities in Dominica? If you are going to organize for a Dominican delegation to represent the country and you are sending a senior rep to ensure that all goes well, you should not expect the individual athletes to each handle getting the corresponding visas. They are travel to represent you, the government and people of Dominica and their safety in your responsibility the minute they gather together to board that flight. The visas are equally your responsibility because you should as a , government, be making one request for visas making it clear to the various governments involved, that these persons named are going to be representing your state while on their territory and that you as a state, will ensure that they are well behaved, taken care of and made to leave at the stipulated time. If you require them, for whatever reason, to get their visas, the least that you can do is avoid the embarrassment in a foreign country, for everyone involved, by ensuring before you buy tickets and fly out, that all documents are in order!!! My ggodness, what incompetence!!!! Are those persons responsible for this failure, the very ones who have been charged with the responsibility of getting Luan to the Olympic games without worry and stress?????? Wow!!!!!! Her coach should travel to London before her and meet up with her once there. Then she should refuse to train with those allocated to her, train with her original coach and then run in the games!!!!!!!!! How is she to perform at her best if being managed by such incompetent persons?????????? SHOCKING!!!!!!!!

Informed Poster. Nabi had no part to play in Team Dominica travel to San Salvador so stick to the issue. Like the DAAA president said on Marpin News this is an unfortunate situation. If anything Nabi should be applauded because he was the one who arranged transportation and pick for Team Dominica while they were stranded in Trinidad. Yes it was he who got his friend in Trinidad to accommodate the team at “No Extra Cost”.

On the other hand Luan has attended several regional competitions for the year, it is amazing how you choose to zero in on Barbados. If you want informed information Luan competed against (WOMEN) in Barbados well over 20 years of age and she is only 16. This competition was used as a booster for her towards the CAC Juniors in which her best time for the weekend was 24.76. Still the only female athlete in Dominica to be able to clock under 25 seconds.

You said efforts were made for Luan to travel with team Trinidad, which is true. But how do you tell a mother we want consent for your child to travel alone with strangers of another country? Are you along with those giving you the informed information in your right frame of mind? To ask Luan mother to send her daughter alone to San Salvador with complete strangers. I would like to see one Dominican who would be prepared to send their 16 year old “daughter” out in a foreign land with strangers.

Stick to the issue in this article which has nothing to do with Nabi.

That is what happens when one is employed based on “who-you-know” and not according to qualifications.I can’t begin to imagine the level of disappointment these athletes felt.

This is pure carelessness – of all things – visa problems? seeing that they are traveling. Isn’t that one of the things that should be checked thoroughly for completeness, accuracy and compliance? papabat! This was either deliberate or extremely sloppy because this mistake is too “easy”.

  60. Well-loved. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 29 Thumb down 1 Righteous! June 29, 2012

As a former Track and Field Athlete, it really pains me to see that this has happened to our young athletes. The president of the DAF(Dominica Athletic Association) should explain to the public why this happened. If, the DOC was involved, there should also be an explanation from the DOC as well.

This should be standard procedure: If we have a team leaving the island for competition, you check on the necessary requirements for entry into the host country. If there is a visa requirement, then you get the necessary documentation from the Government requesting that a visa be granted to the travelling party/individuals to enable their participation in the competition.

Some of the people we have in these organisations (DOC/DAF) are some self righteous, pompous, and arrogant who instead of trying to work with each other for the betterment of the athletes, try to tear each other down for their own purpose. They all forget that without these athletes there is no association.

To the athletes, please keep your head up, and continue to work hard to reach your goals…and on behalf of the Dominican Track loving community, my apologies for such disregard and disrespect to your as Sports Ambassadors…
