Windies Coach: Shillingford has our full support

Shillingford

Colombo, Sri Lanka – West Indies Head Coach Ottis Gibson and the West Indies Team has given full support to off-spinner Shane Shillingford. Gibson spoke on Sunday after the Windies had a training session at Singhalese Sports Club.

Gibson said: “I had a very good chat with Shane and he understands what is going on. We are 100 percent behind Shane. The entire team is behind him and he knows he has our full support. Our job is to keep Shane focussed on the upcoming match and the Series.

“From what we have been told, he can play and he comes into our thinking as normal, as we look ahead to the match. We are building towards doing well in the 2nd Test, as we did in the 1st Test. As a team we are looking forward to the upcoming match. Shane bowled very well for us in the last Test and he’s a key part of our bowling unit.”

The 2nd ERI Test match will be played at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. First ball is Tuesday at 10 am (12.30 am Eastern Caribbean Time/11.30 pm Monday Jamaica Time).

Shane think positive and remain focus. The Caribbean, especially Dominica, together with the West Indies team, all support you. We know you can do it. Just continue to have confidence in yourself and go get the Sri Lankans!

I keep hearing this constant cry about small Island, this and Dominican that and conspiracy here and there. It is a fact that this is not an issue or problem subject to West Indies, and certainly to Shane since he has had the problem surfaced before and was called by Bucknor! Many players been called before from across the cricketing world and others will be called after Shane. My question is this if it was knowledgeable that he had the problem and that it is only evident when he tries to bowl the famous “doosra, he is not good at bowling it, so he should just cut it out and focus and what he is good at bowling! I also understand that he will play in the second test, I just hope that the WI management is not playing into the hands of the ICC by so doing when more eyes and technology will be on Shane, I just hope that the conspiracy talk that is going around is not from within the West Indies itself, by placing Shane out there to be called again and maybe this time even suspended from bowling! Remember Big Benn is available to bowl now after his one match ban!

ANDY, Sri Lanka, Dec 11, 2003 (Reuters)

Sri Lanka filed an official complaint accusing former England captain Nasser Hussain of verbally abusing Muttiah Muralitharan on the second day of the second test on Thursday.

Sri Lanka team sources said Hussain had called Muralitharan a “cheat and a chucker”. Muralitharan, who had just gone out to bat, then reported the incident to umpires Aleem Dar and Darryl Harper.

The team management submitted a written report at the end of the innings.

Match referee Clive Lloyd confirmed that a complaint had been received and promised a statement later in the day. England declined to comment before Lloyd’s statement.

I hope the WICB stands behind him all the way and don’t treat him as they did Lawson. If Shane had’t taken any wickets i wonder if they would have called him. just wondering

Great to read the Coach and the Team is supporting Shane. What about the WICB? I hope this band of sad old men gives Shane their support.

Shane has already gone through this about his bowling action two or three years ago, and was given the OK, God is good, Shane Keep your head High, make yourself, the Team and all Dominicans Proud, I am with you, & for you ! Rally ‘Round the West Indies! that is my Motto!

I’m amazed at some of the rubbish I’m reading in these comments & wonder how the world can really take us serious when we behave this way. Anybody that has even the slightest knowledge of the game will know that Shillingford’s action is not clean. Instead of offering him support so that he can overcome the problem many are back to this tired rubbish about “small islander” etc. Players from every cricket nation have faced the ICC for illegal actions.
    Grow up people.

I am a great fan of Shane but i have watched him bowl on numerous occasions and found that he sometimes look as if his action isn’t clear but he should not let this break him he should try to be careful in the second test Mulli his oppornent has never bowled a good ball in his life but the rules were changed to accomerdate him don’t give up you have a bright future ahead keep focus

don’t give up shane u have an entire country behind you.the same ting was done to kaleb laurant which destroyed his cricket carrier cuz ur from a small island they find u were rude to take 5 wickets.muralitharan throw ball all his life and went on to take the most wickets.keep your head up and try to becareful the hatrez eyes are on you.

My challenge with this is that it makes a mockery of the umpiring system. How can you tell me that a young cricketer comes through the ranks: school cricket, club cricket, first division cricket, national level, regional first class level, Windies A team, etc. and he gets to the highest level of the game and no one has taken him to task for his “suspect” action before now? Something is wrong with the umpiring system. If not, then someone is trying to sabotage the young man’s future.

    @Luscious Woodcock:

Well it is evident that the Umpires don’t share your expertise. What we need to do is hope that when the test are done he can continue to play!

WHO WAS THE UMPIRE IN THE LAST TEST MATCH……STEVE DAVIS AN AUSTRALI9AN………. AUSTRALIANS DONT WANT WEST INDIANS TO RISE, YOU REMEMBER WHEN JERMAIN LAWSON TOOK 7 WICKETS VS AUSTRALIA IN DEAD ARG……NOW WHERE IS LAWSON……THEY LIMMIT US TO 2 BOUNCERS, THE SAID VIV WAS ON DRUGS, ,,,,,,,,,LOOK AT MCGRATH, BRET LEE, AKHTAR, AND MURALI’S ACTION…………..LETS RALLY BEHIND SHANE,,,,,,,, NO ONE WILL DO IT FOR HIM, LETS DO IT LIKE WE DID FOR TARINA

Hope this “cloud hanging over him” doesn’t affect him psychologically; causing him to think about his bowling action during his deliveries, which could negatively affect his performance.

He just need to block it out and bowl as normal. Let due process take its course.

Take on malone samuel when the guy get in his prime scoring alot of runs the say he involved in match fixing which occured three yrs before. Icc and them umpires need some hush they seeing to much. jah guide my brother.

This is rubbish! Why when the guy has worked so hard to get onto the West Indies team, after being over looked for years, this crap comes up. Shane my boy good luck & we all behind you.

    November 21, 2010

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Shillingford’s action when compared to the man who took the most wickets in test cricket. According to Bedi (of India) Muralitharan never “bowled” a ball in his career. The rules were altered to accommodate greater bending of the arm so I can assume here that Shane is perfectly within the legally acceptable limit of bending the arm. It’s another ploy to destabilise and finish West Indies cricket off. We need to be vigilant and very supportive in this situation.

i played against shane in the local league….his action really looks suspect….but not for all of his deliveries i think its an elbow issue …i get the feeling thats why the West Indian selectors were skeptical it picking Shane all along…but will keep our fingers cross he gets Cleared by the ICC.. This is the Fifth International umpire to express concern about his action..If U understand cricket bowling action it really looks like chucking…

Very good move by the rest of the West Indies team to throw their support behind Shane during this ticklish time as his bowling action is under investigation by the ICC. Trust the outcome of all assessments will clear Shane’s bowling action thereby avoiding his suspension from international cricket.
