WINLOTT T/20 for Windsor Park Stadium

Dominica will host the Winlott Windward Islands T/20 at the Windsor Park Stadium from May 26th to 29th, 2011.  St. Vincent & the Grenadines. St. Lucia and Grenada will battle the home team for supremacy, as the winning team will go on to participate in the Caribbean 20/20 Tournament.

The series is a welcome addition to the cricketing landscape of Dominica.  The matches will take the form of a round robin and will be held at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. daily allowing the cricket-loving public to fully participate, especially on evenings.  In fact, Dominica was chosen for the location of this year’s tournament because of the popularity of cricket here as well as the presence of flood lights for staging night matches.

Emmanuel Nanthan, Dominica Cricket Association (DCA) President, said, “Spectators will be in for a treat with stars like Devon Smith, Darren Sammy, Andre Fletcher, Nelon Pascal, Kavem Hodge, Liam Sebastien and others.  Moreover, Dominica are the defending champions, having emerged victorious in the inaugural series last year, and the team is training hard to ensure that the trophy stays at home.  I encourage everyone to come out and support the teams.  Patrons will be getting real value for money as admission is only $10 per day for two games and children under 15 years get in absolutely free.”

The tournament was held for the first time last year in St. Vincent and the Grenadines with the main objective of selecting the team to participate in the Caribbean 20/20 Tournament.  Winlott, short for Windward Islands Lotto, results from the combination of Lotteries Authorities in Dominica, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, St. Lucia and Grenada.

We welcome this T20 event, BUT, Dominica MUST stop concentarting on winning a trophy and look towards exposing our young talented players to prepare them for places on the Windward Team and higher. We won the first event BUT how many of our players got selected on the Windwards T20 Team to be seen and evaluated by the West Indies selectors or secure players in the IPL????? Dominica won eight or nine consecutive WEindward Tournaments in the late eighties and early nineties and St. Vincent secured the most players on the Windward Team and produced many Test Players before we were saved by Shane Shillingford. Today, a St Lucian is West Indies Captain becuase we killed Mervin Matthew who is a BETTER all rounder than the present West Indies Captain. Selectors go from Ramdine to Baugh to Thomas because we hold down Tyrone Theophile and deny him the Keeping position for Domica to allow him to replace Lindon James on the Windwards team who CAN NEVER make West Indies team. There are a number of tired recycled players who have outlived their chances to get to the next level and we need to take action now especially when the event is being hosted at home where local support will be a strength to the young lads. Give Liam a young team to build and start now guys now. Thats the view of a former ( 8 time) National Player.Peace.

I think its a good idea to expose young and budding talent since windwards cricket can use every opp for exposure, there is much talent in these islands and its events like this that can bring them out, its a plus for the stadium as well to host more of the activity it was primarily build for,and will give the public another place to go to on evenings, so all good.
