WIPA expresses disappointment in treatment of Chanderpaul by WICB

KINGSTON, Jamaica: The President and the Executive of the West Indies Players’ Association would like to express its immense disappointment with the treatment of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, a man who has given over two decades of service to West Indies cricket.

The treatment is especially disturbing since it has come after a statement made by WICB President Dave Cameron where he stated;
“…at the end of a long and illustrious career like Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s we want to ensure that whatever we do, it is well respected and that he knows and the region knows how much we value his services to West Indies cricket.”

Chanderpaul the WICB/WIPA Test Cricketer of the Year for 2014 was not selected by the WICB to play in the upcoming home series against Australia. He averages 51.37 and has played in 164 Test matches, the most by a West Indian. At present he is our highest ICC ranked Test batsman and a man who has on numerous occasions held the West Indies batting innings together.

His contributions were also acknowledged by Chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd where he said at a recent press conference: “The guy has been a great servant to our cricket and when that time comes, I think he should be given that sort of send-off that is expected of a player of his calibre.”

WIPA’s President and CEO Wavell Hinds when questioned on the issue said today:
“The West Indies Players’ Association acknowledges and accepts that the purview of selecting the West Indies cricket team lies solely and independently with the selection panel led by Chairman Clive Lloyd, however we are very disappointed in the manner which Mr Chanderpaul was treated. WIPA believes the process of omitting Mr Chanderpaul was untidy and distasteful. We will continue to have dialogue with the West Indies Cricket Board with the hope to bring an amicable solution in the best interests of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and West Indies cricket.”

Let us all be more objective rather than fans . It is clear that his skills have been declining and no matter what one has contributed in the past , if you are not cutting it you can be omitted .The aim of the selectors is to win ! You may not agree with their selections all the time but they are trying to select the best team available. Frankly there is a good young crop of players around who need the opportunity to play . Sometimes it hurts but the game goes on.

Throughout the dismal decline of West indies cricket in the last 10 years, the one constant who we could rely on for respectability has been Chanderpaul. So now he is off from we cant give him 2 more matches to see if he can regain his touch? One match on a ground where he has always excelled?
I agree with Brian Lara on this..it just does not go down well.
The current England captain’s form was off for several matches in the last 12 months, but they persevered with him and he came through beautifully.
Come what may…thanks Shiv for a stellar career where you made us proud.

It is not all about the players. I like Chandi but he has not, himself, made any reference to retirement.
Therefore, he should be selected or dropped on merits…..and right now, there are younger and better players.

Do agree that the WI board should have foreseen this outcry and should have made a more conscious effort to manage his retirement. They lack managerial touch.

I want to give you a thumbs up and a thumbs down both at the same time because you made some sense but you also talked some crap. Crap first……tell me which one of the younger players out there has proven to be ‘better’ than Chanderpaul so far. None!!!!! It is true that his performances of late has not been the most glorious, but despite this I believe that he should have been given one last chance to prove himself because people do loose form and then come back later with awesome performances. I totally agree with you however with regards to lack of foresight by the West Indies Board in dealing with the eventual termination of Chanderpaul’s services. This is an abrupt end to an illustrious career. God speed Chanderpaul.

Its time to go BUT is the manner its done, i believe this coming series should be his last, he has played very well in DA, they went to grenada they picked Smith, went to Barbados they picked Hope, therefore i hope they pick TT….. that give you a sense of how silly these selectors are. its important to blend experience and youth. Then they will bring back Xavier Marshall for the JA test….HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! what a bunch of JOKERS!!!

THE WEST INDIES TEAm need to protest, no players should show up for the game

I am not a fan of Chanderpaul one of west indies most selfish batsmen but if this is his last game he deserves better than that.

This is exactly why West Indies Cricket is on the decline. No respect to the players and the young are showing no more interest in the sport.

WIPA causes more problems than it solves. Are you seriously saying that The Section Panel and The Head Coach are wrong? I can’t remember the same representation being made by WIPA when other high profile Players were not selected. Chanderpaul is 40 pr 40+. It’s time for him to take a rest and do other things. Perhaps his son will be selected in time. It’s not as though we’ve been on a winning streak with Chanderpaul leading the charge. Let’s move forward now. Chanderpaul should bow out gracefully’

Cyrique, we all understand it is time for him to take a rest. But most of us agree too that the way it was done was disgraceful. I agree with Chanderpaul that he has not resigned from any form of cricket and he is going to play in November. Chanderpaul I wish you luck. 1) That the selectors and the Board will rethink their decision and we will see you next or 2) Score runs in November and embarrass them. You will not play any more tests but will retire with most runs in the 2015 – 16 season and you will tell all of them “Go to Hell!”

Chanders has been a stalwart of WI cricket. However there comes a time when everything has to come to an end. Chanders has to recognize the time is now. He is not contributing anything to the betterment of the team, at least not based on his recent performances.

He should have bowed out gracefully. Jonathan Trott was a very good batsman. He stepped aside just over a year ago. He came back but his performance was not the same as the Trott of old. He did the right thing and retired. As far as I can see now, Chanders is being selfish, looking to his own legacy ahead of team’s interest.

Show me one a West Indies batsman who can match his form even now. NONE. Not even Samuels who is the next best on the team.
A player has to be replaced i.e. Pushed out by class, form and ability and not by selectors who, because they did not make it to his standard, feel he should go.
This is a two match series and he should be given the opportunity to end in front of his Caribbean fans.
Has the same happened to Gayle???????

Time for Chanderpaul to pack it up, he is 40 and out of form. He should have announced his retirement before the England series. Remember always performance wins matches not names.

I have been following sports for a long time and West Indies cricket in particular. This is without any shadow of doubt the most shabby treatment I have ever had the misfortune to see a sportsman get after years of sterling service to a team or country. A batsman averaging over 51 for a team as weak as West Indies, serving year in year out for 2 decades, missing a mere 45 runs to be installed as the highest run scorer in history for the Test team and still in at least the best 3 batsmen currently playing from the Craibbean ,,,, and he gets dropped on a ground he did so well on, he was bestowed honarary Dominican citizenship???!! And we wonder why the guys get on like that in India? Or the Gayle chooses to make his millions instead of playing Test cricket? I can never support this team while this nuckleheaded board and selection panel are ruining our cricket. #bunchofjokers
