St. Joseph man sentenced for theft

A Roseau magistrate slapped a 9 months jail sentence on 41 year old Julian “Frenchman” Maxwell of St. Joseph for escaping from the Stock Farm prison where he was serving a 2 year jail sentence for theft of agricultural produce, battery and wounding.

Maxwell was convicted in August 2012.

According to the facts as presented by prosecutor Inspector Claude Weekes, on January 5, 2013 at about midday while lining up for lunch, Maxwell lifted a razor wire fence along with another inmate and went into a nearby unfinished building and jumped from a window 20ft in height.

A chase by prison official proved futile but later that day he was spotted by police close to Al Motors in Canefield and he told them that his reason for escaping was that he was “frustrated and wanted to see a doctor.”

After pleading guilty to the charge Maxwell told the court, “I was really frustrated and was asking an officer to help me but they refused. The person who I shared cells with was frustrating me telling me lets escape and I lose my mind.”

His 9 months jail term will run consecutively with his 2 years sentence. The maximum penalty for escaping prison is 12 months jail.

Meantime, Yannick Lander is again in trouble with the law after he was arrested and charged for battery of a fellow inmate on December 31, 2012.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and remains on remand at the Stock Farm prison.

Lander, who was previously granted bail after he was charged with the 2008 murder of Dwayne Pinard in Castle Comfort, is currently on remand for the battery of Kyle David in March, 2012.
