STAY WELL & SPARKLE – Wave Your Stick

Balloon flagIf music is the rhythm of life, Windsor Park Stadium couldn’t have been more alive with pride than at Thursday’s National Youth Rally.

It harkened back to the visit of the Queen Elizabeth II. How long ago, I will not say, but I was probably no bigger than a toolulu. And soon, you too can roll the videotape. Indeed, you will hear the narrator report, “The youngsters had been looking forward to this day for months.” Amidst the drizzle and lush greenery of the Botanical Gardens, teachers distributed paper flags on wooden sticks. Unable to see above the taller students ahead of us, we waved our Union Jacks feverishly when we heard the crowd cheer. But our royal guest had not passed our way yet.

At some point, I realized my wet flag had completely torn off the stick. Then another louder cheer erupted from those around me. (So that’s how Zacchaeus must have felt because I still couldn’t see). Everybody started waving – so I waved what I had. Good thing nobody dared tell me, “Gimme dat. You cannot wave a stick, garcon!” I was so excited I’d probably chook him with it by accident!

Click here for amazing historical footage of that event See, Chief Minister E. O. LeBlanc from Vielle Case, Dr. Dorian Shillingford, Alwin Bully. Help me with whom else you might recognize. Dominica footage starts from minute 1:07 to 2:07 and then again from 3:06 to the end.

National Pride

I slipped out of this 2014 youth rally to attend to a patient at Urgent Care next door. When I heard a series of roars, I knew that meant another batch of incredibly excited students had just wowed the proud crowd. I dashed back in the brilliant sunshine as soon as I could. All kinds of innovative drills heightened that ‘what next’ air of expectancy. Cell phones, tablets, and cameras were making la fimay. Perfectly pressed uniforms, pounding chests and practiced precision were on full display. One school flashed a hand over heart salute followed by a modified princess wave. Each strove to outdo the others. Some shifted in slow march, others goose-stepped, a few flashed the reviewing stand curious German-style “Heil” salutes.

Then it was unto four more days of sewo with Creole in the Park. Coming hard on the heels of three nights of World Creole Music Festival sounds a bit much – especially taking all the build-up competitions and events into consideration. But hey, the vendors were not complaining. As they say in New Orleans, “Let the good time roll!” After all, no one is forced to attend all events.

However, culture is more than singing, dancing and jump-up. Putting educational material in the media is all well and good, but not enough. It is absolutely necessary to find ways of disciplining warm bodies to assemble themselves together at the grassroots level for joint action on agro/industrial development. The crowds won’t be the same, but this is no reason not to lead by example.

Likewise, Community Day of Service at present is something of an after-thought. As a developing country we cannot fete for seven days and do something constructive for only one. We can get more creative with the calendar. The wise ones of yesteryear have exhorted us to “Toil with hearts and hands and voices.” Observe carefully that the sequence of words requires us talk less and do more. We have serious work to do with regards to respect, cooperation and mobilizing the skills of with every single citizen in order to truly move forward and prosper as a nation.

Humble-brag

At the celebration of Fr. Kelvin Felix several months ago, I noticed he repeatedly referred to himself as “Your unworthy servant.” Profoundly spiritual, I thought. At least, it certainly had a better ring to it than other religious leaders who portray themselves supreme Lord and Master over their little flock. So what’s the point?

Well, not that I expect similar expressions from politicians, but frankly, an injection of humility is sorely need in this country. We do a disservice when we teach those who have not travelled that Dominica is the greatest place to live. Tone that down a bit. If truth be told, we appear a bit louder, cruder and more selfish than before – I dare say, more so than several other places in the world. (Somebody, please prove me wrong). The main reason? Many are so inflamed with politics dressed up as patriotism, they are premeditated and ready to chook fellow citizens. Please, it is quite unbecoming to spoil the unspoilt Nature Isle with underdevelopment, wrapped in negligence, topped up with arrogance.

This year we observe independence with an election round the corner. May the best candidate win. Celebrate statesmanship, and downplay partisanship. Easy to say, but hard to do. As leaders or supporters, we ought not to exalt our own self-importance during the our time on this platform. Every one of us, at some point, must ‘exit stage left.’ So let the record of serving others speak for itself. The balance has shifted way too far to how much can I grab or what have you done for me lately. We do recall it being said somewhere, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”

Bold Future

We threw off the shackles of colonialism, but the mentality persists. We have come a long way, but what neo-colonial threats lurk in the shadows of our revelry? At the intricately organized rally, it dawned on me what great reservoir of hope we have in this blessed land. Kudos to our leadership, Dominican students have many more tools and opportunities for advanced studies than we had in my time. They have no choice but excel as we give proper guidance.

It’s our nation to develop. We have welcomed new tribes and tongues to our table. They bring a vibrant infusion of energy, gifts and talents. We native Dominicans must shake ourselves otherwise crapaud smoke our pipe. Meanwhile, if a stick is all you’ve got for now, wave it! And, as Fireman Wendell Christian liked to say, don’t forget to thank God for small mercies, bigger ones will come.

Happy Independence!

First of all, I wish to inform everyone here, that I have removed myself from what you called “the battle of words” I refuse to stoop so low with such contenders–but when it is necessary to speak against falseness, futility, and stupid negativity, on behalf of my people I will do so!

“And you are correct, the change that is needed is the cleansing of the mind, but how are the minds going to get this change?”

I take it that you have questioned my idea pertaining to what kind of change we need in Dominica; your mentioned the leaders there and how are they going to execute that change in people–that is the same reason I know that we do not know what we are saying when we speak that logo known as “Change is a must”

My friend I said that the only “change that is needed”, referring to our mindset, because I am not talking about the work of human beings, in that our leaders themselves, need that work of mind themselves–those who are calling for change do not know that; as you, yourself has mentioned them–even if you agree with me

The change, that must happen in Dominica, must happen within every person at home and abroad; the is the work of God by our faith–no human being can do this work in himself or for someone else–without the intervention of God by his and her faith.

Doctor Christian said it in his message where he said: “Well, not that I expect similar expressions from politicians, but frankly, an injection of humility is sorely need in this country” News Article

Right here Dr. Christian has confirmed that the change which I am talking about. which cannot happen by the work of man. Dr. Christian is saying that unless we Dominicans can stop to acknowledge our true ,mentality–that contentious mentality of our mind– and to turn to God’s Love of mercy and compassion–that is what humility does–we will have nothing better than what we have now–especially that we don’t even appreciate the little blessings from God–because our mind is plagued with self pride..

God could even execute His wrath of Holiness against us, because of our lack of reverend fear towards Him–I can only pray that He will not lose His patience with us.

I live you with the teaching of the apostle Paul, his words should tell you exactly what I am talking about when I speak of change through our mindset by faith and humility. Read it below! But make sure that you pay attention to verse 2

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12: 1–2 Blessings!

“At the celebration of Fr. Kelvin Felix several months ago, I noticed he repeatedly referred to himself as “Your unworthy servant.” Profoundly spiritual, I thought.”(Dr. Samuel L Christian).

The words above are written by Dr. Christian, I chose to comment on those particular words. I do not have to comment on everything he wrote verbatim, what interest me; I focus on precisely.

Now ; fake The Facts, and that yellow young sucoocooyant, I do not care what you all say or think about me: eat your heart out. Mind you the Scriptures I quoted to support the reason Kelvin is referring to himself as a servant, are the Words of Jesus Christ himself; not mine!

If Kelvin wish to humble himself and allow God to exalt him rather men, and in the persons of a nobody, and a so called one who said she is a preacher Elizabeth; nothing you two little, or should I say three little weasels can say will not change the power and authority of God. As for you Elizabeth, I know what is your problem (but I doh talking eh), that is your problem not mine oui!)

As for fake The Facts, you are a nameless nobody; I doh know eh:

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

I doh know you, from Adam. You and Elizabeth are irrelevant, at lease the sucoooyant have a name, and I know she have a shape like human, but as for The Facts, I doh know if you are a facts machine, or that machine that the late James Brown sang about in his song when said ” I’m like a S.. machine.”

I can only conclude that there are plenty of crazy, mentality ill people out there, and you nobody, and Elisabeth fits that criteria

You all can exalt all the pope, priest, cardinal, and whatsoever, you wish to call them, their titles such as rev. mans nothing as fare as God is concerned, such titles are their glory on earth: for God has said in vane they worship me!

I am finished with you two on this subject.

And the battle of words continue. Thanks for juggling some memories, and for some of us giving us some insights into our countries history. And you are correct, the change that is needed is the cleansing of the mind, but how are the minds going to get this change? who is going to take on the responsibility to bring about that change? certainly not the leaders themselves. They will not not want to forget about the money and other material possessions they will acquire. in fact they will fight “tooth and nail” to remain in power to ensure that they always have, while the masses continue to beg them like little puppies. Change is important, and i dare say inevitable.

I think you missed Nurse Caines (She may have been matron at PMH)
I believe Alwyn is dancing with His sister Barbara
There is also one of the White brothers as supporting dancers for Alwyn & someone I think was a Mr. Walker. I believe there was also Peter Green, but it is difficult to tell.

    I remember that day well.

Just an aside. I will always think of Cardinal Felix as Father Felix. I said that to Him one time & His reply was words to the effect
‘ Does not matter what you remember me by, just remember me’

I think the good doctor meant Cardinal but perhaps used Fr. out of habit. Is Cardinal OK with you, Francisco?

Mr. Telemaque, I fail to see how a man of your intellectual stature can miss the impact of such a major cultural/political commentary to blow so much hot air on the old, worn out issues of Rev. & Fr. How do your comments advance what the doctor refers to as the common good?

    • Francisco Telemaque
      November 3, 2014

Do not focus on me; focus on the word of God which I quoted out of the Bible to support the comments I made; so, if you wish to focus, on someone focus on Jesus Christ, because those are his words not mine!

I responded according to the commentary Sam wrote. He said “father”, abbreviated Fr., even if he called the man cardinal, what difference would it have made? Tell me where in the Bible do you find any Prophet in the old Testament, or in The New Testament where any of the disciples who followed (walked) with Jesus Christ, God: in the flesh, in the form of man who were called father, Rabbi, or pope; and I deliberately wrote pope in lower case letters for a reason, if you are academically informed I do not have to explain why to you.

Even in the Bible there is a reference to Jesus as a “Servant.” And that can be found in the Book of Isaiah I believe. Luke was a physician (medical ) doctor by profession. At no time was he referred to as Dr. Luke. in the Bible. Nevertheless some of them like to be called Dr., but there is a part of scripture which said “doctor heal thy self,” that’s deep, and such are exposed to show people like you that religion is into titles, simply to place themselves on pedestals while they look down on others.

Seventh Day Adventists call their preachers, Elders, they took that term from where Moses told Joshua to select Elders from among the people to help him. The Elder here refers to older men among the people who came out of Egypt during their Exodus. Before anybody tackle me, have something worthwhile to throw at me, because some of you will make fools out of yourselves trying to make a joke out of me. I am not a pappy show, i will demolish you with my intelligence!

Now, here is what Jesus had to say about such people in Matthew 23:3,4. “All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.”

If you wish to ignore the words, of God, and his direction, to those of us who believe in him and his words; and you prefer to honor, and adore sinful men, whose goodness to God is like filthy rags, it is your purgative, I can’t tell you what to do, however in my case I call no man playing priest, or whatsoever preacher they want to call themselves father, Rabbi, Reverend, pope, or by any other title they bestowed on themselves, their title means squat doodle to me; I do not know about you! I have many relatives who are Methodist ministers, I call them by their birth name, if they do not like it, all they have to do is ” lump it.”

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

I here I have one of them in the Wesley area, who like to be called Dr. I have not spoken with him in a long time, but if we ever meet again in this life, and I call him by the name my uncle gave him when he was born, and he does not like it: Oh well!

One of the first Dominican in history to earn a PhD, outside of a medical degree he is from Wesley, I visited with him a little over a year ago, he referred to me as “Son’ that’s what everybody in Wesley calls me way back to when I was a mere boy. I called him cousin R, that’s how I referred to him when I was small . So when I call people by their name if they do not like it I am sorry, there are many ways one can give respect to someone who deserves it without indulging in any crap: I have a doctor who treats me, from the time we were introduced, we refer to each other on a first name basics, I have dated more than one medical doctors, one night I went to a party with one of them and called her Dr. what her surname is, she got so angry, it almost caused a breakup!

My thing was short, if you did not trouble me, this would not be necessary, you see.

      @Toloma November 2, 2014

I like your question “How do (does) your comments advance what the doctor refers to as the common good?” The bracket is my correction–I hope you do not mind.

I would rather leave this alone, but what good would I be doing for those who want to learn or are searching for the truth? –I hear Holy spirit telling me none at all; and so I must speak

Dr. Christians mention of Father/Cardinal Felix’s saying was because he needed to point out an awful flaw in the minds of us Dominicans; that flaw is the lack of “humility” here is what he said following his mention of the Cardinal’s words

“Well not that I expect similar expressions from politicians, but frankly, an injection of humility is sorely need in this country” . Dr. Sam Christian.

And I definitely agree with him–for I have perceived that the minds of us, Dominicans is sick of the mentality which describes “PRETENCIOUS –the list is a long one–Dr. Christians has confirmed my perception.

That very same attitude is the reason for that “blowing of hot air” according to you, which does nothing for those who read doctor Christians message–why not a response that can enhance what Doctor Sam spoke about?

Unfortunately it is simply stupidity, which will do nothing for those who are trying to learn or is searching for the truth–as I have already said–especially that God knows all of that rambling is the seed and production of hypocrisy–some people are failing to realize that they cannot hide from God

At least, it certainly had a better ring to it than other religious leaders who portray themselves supreme Lord and Master over their little flock. So what’s the point?”

    Here it is.

Doc, the reason Kelvin refers to him self as a servant is because of this: Mathew 23:9,10,11, and 12; where Jesus said “And call no man on your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.” (King James Version Of The Bible).

That is also written in the Roman Catholic Bible: That tells me that Kelvin has read the Bible, and wish to be guided by the written word of God, and not the philosophy of Rome. Now there are some who like to be called “Reverend” abbreviate Rev., but this is what King David said in Psalm 111:9.

“He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever; holy and reverend is his name.” David is talking about Jesus Christ. Only Jesus Christ is reverend!

We read again in Hebrews 12:28 “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us give grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.” I do not want to be too long with this, but any place in the word reverend, reverence is found, that is pertaining to God Almighty Jehovah, and his Son Jesus Christ. Unlike Kelvin many of them like to be called Rev. and Fr. because that is prestigious, it makes them fell important, they high and mighty, and are above the people who they should be serving preaching and teaching the word of God. If we read the book carefully From Genesis down to Revelation, we will not find a single disciple of Jesus called Rev., this and Fr., that! Let the word of God take precedence over the wishes, and philosophy of man!

      Correction: Matthew 23:9.

“And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.”

While I make the correction, in reference to not calling anybody father: in this case it has to do with those who preach the word of God, the Bible also told us we should not call anybody Rabbi as the those in the Jews religion do.

Nevertheless, what we read in Mathew Chapter 23:9 does not relate to our biological birth father; because in Proverbs I believe we are told ” honor thy father and mother, that thy days will be long on the earth.” That may not be a direct quote, however, that is precisely what it means.

Your words: That tells me that Kelvin has read the Bible, and wish to be guided by the written word of God, and not the philosophy of Rome.

Oh my! What else will you state, you with your unenlightened mind.

Nonsense! Always assuming and incorrectly so. Non-Catholics think they know more than practicing Catholics of all. What do you know? Little do you know.
This is why Cardinal Felix progressed to one of the Hierarchies of the Catholic Church today. It is through his faithfulness, obedience to his Catholic Church, to the Pope as Leader of the Catholic Church.
Every Christian Catholic is obligated to believe all what the Holy Catholic Church believes and teaches. If they refuse to believe and obey they are not genuine Catholics. Much more could be stated about that. Therefore, please do not place Cardinal Felix in that lowly category. He does not deserve it.
You should read his profile of how he got to where he is today. It certainly was not through disobedience to Rome, the Holy Father which he never was.
As I stated, you are in dire need of God’s blessing, graces and enlightenment to discern this and comprehend it. Only faithful Catholics could comprehend this. Allow them their God-given rightful privilege endowed to them by God for His Church which He established 2000 years ago.

    • The Facts
      November 2, 2014

He is now Cardinal Kelvin Felix. There is absolutely nothing you can do about it and to change it. God has ordained it to be through His One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
You are not a Catholic and do not possess the godly enlightenment to comprehend these things. Therefore, leave well alone and the teachings of the Catholic Church.
Furthermore, why bring this up? This is not really what Dr. Christian’s article is fully about it. He only made reference to this. It was not meant for your criticism of all.
Little do you know what is contained in Holy Scripture especially the New Testament and St. Paul’s teaching.

1 Timothy 6:3-7 – Teach and urge these things – Whoever teaches something different and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and “the religious teaching”, is conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid disposition for arguments and verbal disputes. From these come envy, rivalry, insults, evil suspicions, and mutual friction among people with corrupted minds…

1 Corinthians 4:14:15 – I am writing you this not to shame you, but to admonish you “as my beloved children.” Even if you should have ‘countless guides’ to Christ, yet, you do not have many fathers, “for I became your ‘Father’ in Christ Jesus through the Gospel.”

St. Paul told us to hold on to the tradition that we were taught. This is the tradition of the Catholic Church which those who are not Catholic Christians do not practice.

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 – Tradition of the Institution – Holy Mass – For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and after he had given thanks, broke it and said. This is my body that is for you (given up for you). Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes…

Know what is contained in the New Testament. You have much to learn.

@The Facts November 2, 2014 “This is not really what Dr. Christian’s article is fully about it. He only made reference to this”

Yes! Dr. Christian mentioned the expression of Father Felix which said:: “I noticed he repeatedly referred to himself as “Your unworthy servant.” So why waste time with such a long response against words of futility and negativity?

Like someone above said: Both of you are “blowing hot air” rambling about a subject which has nothing to do with Dr. Christians message-once again. I am saying the he simply used the expression of Father/Cardinal Felix to speak his idea of “humility” in us Dominicans here is the important statement which Dr. Christians spoke: below

“Well, not that I expect similar expressions from politicians, but frankly, an injection of humility is sorely need in this country”

Well what do you think about that? And as for the one whom you are responding against–I know that that individual knows nothing about “humility”

Doctor Christian’s message deserved much better commendation than those two comments. Good Lord!

  8. November 1, 2014

First of all Dr. Christian, I can perceive that you are really a person with great Love for Dominica–your home country and mine too–along with her people, yours, mine, and all the rest; Dr. Christian you are a person like me.

Along with your love for our Dominica and her people, you have this blessed gift if Charisma–it is impossible for someone to read your message and not experience that beautiful enchantment that you speak right through to our very core–Self or Soul in its awakening– within us

Thank you so much for that piece of yours, but before I leave, I need to mention 3 of the most captivating lines of yours like this one here “(So that’s how Zacchaeus must have felt because I still could not see)”

Hehehehehehe–this is my gleeful laugh–but I love the way you do not write without quoting something from God’s Word–the Holy Bible; continue in your ways.

However I imagined you to be a tall man–your upper part looks like it–but I may be wrong. Nonetheless Zacchaeus had to be extremely short that he needed to climb up that tree so to see Jesus Hehehehehehehe!

The second line of your message which is much more important, than Zacchaeus being too short, is this one here: “Well, not that I expect similar expressions from politicians, but frankly, an injection of humility is sorely needed in this country” I say Amen to that line because it is factual–a thought production of my mind.

Those of us who are talking about “change” in our country, need to realize, the change that is needed belong in the cleansing of our mind. Not the change of one group of people to enroll another group–there will not fruitfulness in that kind of move.

Our people need to pray and ask God to take away this foolish pride off their minds, the only way He can plant “humility” on its ground and “humility” is one of the attitude of the Spirit, Love–and Love is of God–He is the King of kings, all Powerful, All Mighty. and all Great, without Him, in His Person, Jesus the Son in the flesh, we can do nothing!.

Too bad, according to you, where is that thought and prayer in the minds of politicians?–those who think they cannot fall off that high horse of theirs

My concern is that, this wicked poison of pride and self-centeredness is a dangerous plague among us–especially the young–who must be the leaders of tomorrow–may God show His mercy and compassion of Love

“And, as Fireman Wendell Christian liked to say, don’t forget to thank God for small mercies, bigger ones will come” This another great thought on the grounds of my mind, from the day God called me back in Life with Him–that was 25 years ago..

As human beings we expect to see huge miracles, before we can show any kind of gratitude to God, because we do not pay attention to the little things which are blessings from Him to us–just the same as His great miracles in our Life.

Thank you once more for the messages of Love, straight from God, continue in your works as God is guiding you to do so–but don’t forget the glory is for Him, not yours, that is how the work of “humility” is exemplified Let His will be done through you–not what you want to do. Blessings!

I could not have said it better myself. I had the same reaction to the article. All I can say is do not kill the messenger. We need mature perspective. We need more brave insight into continuous improvement of our country.

I am always entertained and informed. That is why I cannot miss anything these Christian Brothers write
