Dominica observes International Girls in ICT Day

women in technologyAs Dominica joins the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to observe Girls in Information Communications and Technology (ICT) Day on Thursday 24th, April, 2014, Minister for Telecommunications Ambrose George has said that ICT is an important tool through which gender equality and women’s empowerment can be advanced.

According to George ICTs are integral to the creation of societies in which both women and men can substantively contribute and participate.

“Our girls and young women are now in a position to take advantage of such a wide range of scientific disciplines which helps close the gender gaps between men and women in the area of science and technology which was once believed to be the sole property of men,” he said.

George pointed out further that ICTS impact every aspect of life and young girls trained in this area can benefit from a wide range of opportunities.

He added that as part of the day’s celebration there will be an ICT Quiz completion on the national radio station DBS for girls and young women which will aid in stimulation of their thoughts in ICT.

In addition, there will be highlights on the role of women in technology both locally and internationally including the young girls who were finalist in the recent Digital Jam in Jamaica.

The minister added that plans are already in motion for Girls in ICT Day 2015 which will be geared at showcasing the achievements and skills of our young women and girls in technology.

He noted further that girls should begin considering careers in ICT for their continued development.

“Make ICT a career for the continued development of yourself, your family, your country and your world there are great opportunities awaiting you on the horizon once you have been trained in ICT,” he said. “The ICT industry is the fastest growing industry in the world today which means that girls in ICT will never be out of work ICT skills means that girls will be able to work anywhere in the world as they wish and in the most exciting jobs imaginable from health care to software development.”

International Girls in ICT Day is an initiative created to empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies.

    Way I see it, girls have everything, pagents ,x,y u name it. Now when boys play football 24/7 or on the block. They complain. but you dont see that you push your girls and do everything for your ladies

    Pretty sure females belong in the kitchen and not on computers doing what they see on TV or playing solitaire.

    It is such a contradiction we talking gender equity and equally and also but we in Girls in ICT day. What’s that about….stupes

      Think of it as balancing out the inequality that existed before. With more of such events more women will be empowered to get into traditionally male dominated areas. Pretty soon we will get to a point where the lines are blurred to such an extent that we no longer need to emphasize it.

    What about International Boys in ICT day? When will Dominica and the world by extension observe it?

    We keep hearing about all these women dis and dat observations. What happen? The male species does not deserve a day also?

      the boys don’t need an ict day because they are already well informed and are more advanced in this area than girls
