The license of the Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC) to operate expires in the next five years, but its Managing Director Collin Cover says there are no intentions to cease its services, and they are even looking into possibly embracing the geothermal market.

“The board … certainly intend[s] to be a player in the electricity market in DOMLEC for as far into the future as all the projections are … We are even looking at how to probably get into the geothermal market if we possibly can,” Cover said.

“DOMLEC is not just simply waiting ’til 2015 and then pack up and roll out; we certainly intend to be players in the future,” he added.

The company is currently looking at setting up wind turbines.

With the current share ownership structure of DomLec, Government should NOT let DomLec near Geothermal Energy generation.

When 2015 roles in, Government and Dominicans in General, should take a majority holding in DomLec, then and only then should DomLec being allowed to get into the Geothermal Energy generation.

It is because of this type of thinking that productivity and progression are at a sand still and sometimes even non-existent in our country and in our lives. I will definitely tell you that more can be done by the major companies in Dominica to better the lives of the everyday man, but I’m not going to agree with you that hey have done nothing for the country. From donating to the schools, the arts, the poor and needy, etc. and making a lot of things available and possible through their efforts, they have contributed to the betterment of our country. I just know that they can do more and hope one day they will.

Any geothermal plant built in Dominica should have enough capacity to export to the other islands to our north and south otherwise it will not make sense and Dominicans will only see increasing electricity bills.
With export capacity the rates that persons pay on Dominica can be subsidized (that’s a bad word) by the export earnings of whichever company it is doing the geothermal generation.

    Regards

@ only: I am not sure that geothermal energy will bring down the bills. I am certain that production costs will be less, but shareholders of these sorts of companies are so greedy that if anything they will send up the price and say that they need to make back the money that they spent putting the technology in place.

I’m glad for DOMLEC, atleast that is a company with balls, and what you people saying about Cable and Wireless? anything that dosnet go all you way, you guys deteste. You should learn to appreciate the sacrifices that companies make in Dominica. I know for a fact that all the criticisers cannot do as half as CABLES ans DOMLEC is doing for this country. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR EFFORTS

We need geothermal developed so that electricity bills are cut by at least 75% and this is possible. That would increase productivity. Use what the earth gave us to our advantage. Competition would also be a good thing.
