Ten Dominican citizens have been granted the opportunity to pursue a University education through the Chinese Government Scholarship program.

Miguel Bruney, Jancy M Phillip, Curlson George, Wendy Williams, Dania Lovell, Jermina Roberts, Kathlyn C. Paul, Desrond O James, Jackie Xavier and Eleesha Hilliare were all handed their admission letters from the Charge d’ Affaires, Qui Weiwei, Education Minister Petter Saint Jean and Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alvin Bernard.

Minister of Education Petter Saint.  Jean warned the students that they should not squander the opportunity that has been bestowed upon them to become global citizens.

He said the Chinese Government has awarded 126 Dominican students with scholarships over the past nine years. This investment amounts to over US $7 million.

Saint. Jean underscored the importance of education and stated, “A learned people is imperative for individual development and also for economic growth and sustainability. Education remains a major priority of this government as we seek to elevate the lives of our people. Therefore, the continued investment the Chinese Government and people in the development of our human resource capacity must be highly acknowledged and commended.”

Saint. Jean pointed out that the students are fortunate to benefit from the Scholarship program since it gives them the opportunity to broaden their knowledge, understanding and experience in a diverse culture.

Charge d’Affaires, Qui Weiwei noted that the Chinese Government Scholarship program is one that connects the individual dream with the country’s dream.

To all of you, especially my former students Eleesha and Kathlyn I just want to take the opportunity to wish you all the best in your studies. Studying in a foreign country comes with all its challenges especially when there is a language barrier but with determination and trust in God everything will be alright. Keep your head on your shoulders, tell yourself that you are on a personal mission and that you are going to fulfill all your goals you have set before you. One last advice always pray and ask God to guide you in your studies, only He can bring you SUCCESS! God Bless you!

I wish you all the best. You have the opportunity to get a solid education, learn a language that is international demand and be exposed to a new culture. Look for the opportunities. You will face challenging times, but they will build character.Keep your eyes on the goals, you have set for yourselves. I love you all.

YES, THE GOVERNMENT IS HELPING THEM FISH, WHICH IS TRUE. BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW AT WHAT COST?. AND BY THE WAY, WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO ARE ALREADY FISHING? THE GOVERNMENT NOT HELPING THEM TO FISH MORE, OR THE GOVERNMENT ALREADY KILL THEM. REMEMBER, THERE ARE TWO IMPORTANT WORDS, FIRST AND SECOND OR BEFORE AND AFTER. “A BIRD IN THE HAND IS WORTH TWO IN THE BUSH”, NEVER THROW AN OLD FOR A NEW.

Congratulations young people who are chosen to study in China. The minister has given you some sound advice, to make the most of the opportunity. For the present there is not much I could add to it except to say, good luck, study hard and when you depart and arrive in China, keep well and safe. I expect prior to your departure we will be haring more about your travel and curriculum. God bless you!

Yep, so they can go back to Dominica after indoctrination and help form the Dominica communist party and make it a requirement that all Dominica school children lean to read and write Chinese while Dominica is being made a Chinese colony with a Chinese Governor with Skerrit as Premiere of the Dominica communist party.

Look out for the “global citizen” part. Everyone is always toting “jobs.” What they should be saying is creating “careers.” I don’t see many DA people that really want to work. Quick money and an easy take is what I see over and over again.

Mr.Minster if my MATH is correct , you are telling us that on average $729,615 EC is spent on a student, ah Mon dominique pa sort… be more realistic

    • Eh?
      August 8, 2013

      Where you learn math?

    • Hmmmmm
      August 8, 2013

WRONG CALCULATION MY FRIEND….THE AVERAGE AMOUNT IF SEVEN MILLION IS DIVIDED AMOUNG 126 STUDENTS IS $55, 555.55…ALLU TOO LIKE RORO!!!

    • MATHS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
      August 8, 2013

      $7,000,000 US = $18,970,000 EC. Conversion rate $2.71

If 129 students were sent then $18,970,000 divided 129 would give us the average spent on each student. That average works out to be $147,054.26 EC

I’m not quite sure how your calculations were done, but your $729,615 is WRONG!

    • Jaz Hamilton
      August 9, 2013

Actually your math is incorrect. You people must stop trying to act like political parasites with negativity. so many people agree with your idiotic statement and no one bothered to actually do the math as you claimed. the article said “7 Million spent on 126 persons over a nine year period” so the Math to figure out how much was spent on each person would be 7 Million/126 which is 55,555.56 USD or 150,555.56 XCD. How in gods name did you get at 729,615 per student????? but to be fair to you you did say “if your math is correct” Clearly you left Math at pre school….Why would DNO allow such a libelous comment and not allow so many other good ones???SMH

    • Aratzio
      August 9, 2013

your math seems inaccurate to me tho….

      126 students ≈ 7,000,000
      1 student = x

      7,000,000/126 ≈ 55,555.56

      therefore: 55,555.56 x 2.7169 ≈ 150,938.89

Hence the figure is actually around $150.938.89 EC per student……a bit more realistic

      • I say so
        August 11, 2013

All all you decalculation is just assumptions. The said amount will never be spent equally on all the students. Money gets lost in the shuffle. So all the maths I’ve seen so far is dead wrong. I see some logic; not correct math. Already one ‘mathamatician’ came up with an “average.” Ten gas stations on the Island, each one sells at a different price. Through addition and division one arrives at an average price per gallon. Each student’s need is different, and monies would have to be allocated to each one based on their particular need. See how we fight over trivialities!!

    • Just Blaze
      August 9, 2013

Well I dont know where you learn to do maths but 7 million ec times 2.7169 divided by 126 students is $150938 EC per student and thats a very realistic number. Maybe they should have given you a scholarship to go and study maths.

Is there a certain level of discrimination on the part of the Dominica Government in favour of the Chinese scholarship program?
The Cuban scholarship program has been operational for 34 years and has produced some excellent professionals, but listening to government officials one would swear that only China has given scholarships.
It is time that those Cuban graduates make their presence known and give Cuba the admiration and gratitude it deserves. Had it not been for Cuba our professionals would still be a handful of elites trained at UWI, UK and USA.
Thanks China but Cuba’s contribution towards the training of Dominicans runs in over One Hundred Million Dollars more than 20 times what you have contributed. I have always been taught “Make new friends, but keep the old” don’t be ungrateful or engras.

      August 9, 2013

So only Labourites that should get scholarships? When are we going to stop with the petty politics? You will cause people to pretend to be Labour just to get benefits and then they are not being real! It’s a free country, let’s encourage diversity. I am not a supporter of UWP by any means but your statement is ridiculous. This message is for wow

    • mojo1
      August 9, 2013

      @ wow

      1. If u are saying is only 1 UWP supporter that got a scholarship, then there is something very wrong about that too. Every single UWP pay taxes and contribute to the economy and only 1 gets a scholarship.

      2. Finally the child is not responsible for the decision of her parent(s).

      3. Dominican are one people. Is only weak and foolish people that take pride in dividing their nation.

      4. when a person disagrees with the policies of the ruling party, that does not mean they hate anyone. This is a right enshrined in the constitution.

      5. your gutter rantings have done much damage to the image of Dominica since it portrays the inhabitants as petty minded, divided and illiterate fools.
